<p>The MDC party led by Nelson Chamisa has “invited” the ruling ZANU PF party and the Thokozani Khupe-led MDC-T for its elective Congress set for May 24 to 26.</p>
<p>The party has vowed to go ahead with its Congress in spite of a High Court ruling voiding  Chamisa’s authority over the party.</p>
<p>The invitation was revealed by the party’s organising secretary, Amos Chibaya, during a media briefing in Harare on Friday. Said Chibaya:</p>
<blockquote><p>We invited all political parties in Zimbabwe, Zanu PF included.</p>
<p>We also invited war veterans, the likes of Cde (Victor) Matemadanda and company.</p>
<p>We also invited chiefs through honourable Chief Charumbira, the president of the Chiefs’ Council.</p>
<p>She (Khupe) was invited because she belongs to MDC-T.</p></blockquote>
<p>MDC spokesperson Jacob Mafume corroborated Chibaya’s claims. He said:</p>
<blockquote><p>We know that Zanu PF likes to peep; it is a peeping Tom. We know that even if we had not invited them, they would be there. So we have invited them. The organising secretary can confirm.</p></blockquote>
<p>The MDC faces a real existential threat after the High Court last week ruled that the current leadership is illegitimate and should let Thokozani Khupe, former deputy Prime Minister, to take over the reins of the party pending the holding of an extraordinary Congress.</p>

MDC 'Invites' ZANU PF, Khupe To It's Elective Congress

<p>An MDC MP who has been at the forefront in an attempt to overturn the party’s Bulawayo 5th Congress results has made a U-turn and fully thrown his weight behind president Nelson Chamisa.</p>
<p>MP for Nketa, Phelela Masuku lost the provincial chairmanship to Makokoba legislator James Sithole.</p>
<p>Masuku and his followers petitioned the party’s national executive council to nullify the nominations.</p>
<p>Disgruntled party officials in Bulawayo accused Chamisa and organising secretary Amos Chibaya of rigging the nomination process.</p>
<p>Chamisa was also accused of tribalism and having dictatorial tendencies.</p>
<p>However, Masuku took to Facebook to express his ‘religious’ support for Chamisa. He wrote:</p>
<blockquote><p>Stop abusing my name in the media. I will never betray the struggle. I am religiously loyal to my party and the President and our family affairs are not meant for neighbours or the public. Keep on dreaming.</p></blockquote>
<p>When <em>NewZimbabwe</em> reached out to him for clarity, Masuku flatly refused. He said:</p>
<blockquote><p>I do not normally talk to journalists, more so when I do not know them. On this one, I do not have a comment.</p></blockquote>
<p>There were reports of violence and rigging during the MDC congresses as party officials jostled for positions of authority.</p>

MDC MP In Dramatic U-turn, Throws Weight Behind Chamisa

<p>MDC president Nelson Chamisa reportedly received a hostile reception by disgruntled MDC officials in Bulawayo who were not happy over his perceived tribalism and dictatorial tendencies, a report claims.</p>
<p>Chamisa was in Bulawayo for the party’s provincial caucus where nominees for the party’s executives were canvassing for support ahead of the May 24-26 electoral Congress.</p>
<p>According to a <em>Chronicle</em> report, graffiti attacking Chamisa was allegedly written between midnight and early Monday morning. The report reads:</p>
<blockquote><p>Some of the messages written on the walls and gate to the party provincial office include, “Chamisa ule nketha betshabi (Chamisa you are tribalistic), “Chamisa usubulele i MDC” (Chamisa you have destroyed MDC), “Chamisa a worse dictator”, “Chamisa uyadelela” (Chamisa you are disrespectful) among other derogatory and inflammatory messages.</p></blockquote>
<p>The graffiti was reportedly removed by the party before Chamisa’s arrival.</p>
<p>However, MDC party spokesperson, Jacob Mafume dined that there was any graffiti at the party’s offices.</p>
<p>Bulawayo provincial chairperson Switcher Chirowodza said that reports of graffiti at the Gertrude Mthombeni House were fictitious. He said:</p>
<blockquote><p>I have heard about photoshop pictures on the walls of Gertrude Mthombeni House (The party’s provincial offices). Your source should desist from disseminating fiction.</p></blockquote>

MDC Officials In Bulawayo Denigrate Chamisa - Report

<p>MDC president Nelson Chamisa told party members to brace for mass protests after the May 24-26 electoral Congress to be held in Gweru.</p>
<p>Addressing supporters in Bulawayo’s Mzilikazi suburb on Monday during debates between candidates for executive positions at the Congress, Chamisa said:</p>
<blockquote><p>Wait for our congress. After the 26th, you’ll see what’s going to happen.</p>
<p>We can’t be having problems in the country when we have such competent people in leadership.</p>
<p>Listen to the quality of debate, the MDC is rich. We want 2023 right now. We’re not going to shirk.</p></blockquote>
<p>Harare East MP and vice presidential nominee, Tendai Biti told the same group that Chamisa should be at State House before the end of this year. Said Biti:</p>
<blockquote><p>We must complete the journey that we started at Rufaro Stadium on September 11, 1999 (day MDC was formed).</p>
<p>That means that we want to put this man at Number 1, Chancellor Lane, Borrowdale, also known as State House before the end of the year, today!</p></blockquote>
<p>The MDC has from time to time threatened streets protest to force the government to deal with the fast-deteriorating socio-economic situation.</p>
<p>Prices of goods and services have continued to rise whilst the disposable incomes have not changed in many years. Recently, power utility ZESA began debilitating load shedding across the country while the major urban settlements do not have water consistently.</p>
<p>Furthermore, fuel shortages have become the new normal as motorists spend hours in fule queues.</p>
<p>However, the government’s default reaction to recent protests has been the use of live ammunition against the protestors.</p>

2023 To Far For Chamisa, Demands Fresh Elections Now

<p>MDC president Nelson Chamisa told party officials working in an unholy alliance with ZANU PF that they should leave the party.</p>
<p>Chamisa said this on Friday while officially opening the MDC Midlands caucus in Gweru. He said:</p>
<blockquote><p>We are changing the direction of the party. We will no longer just walk with anyone. We will scrutinise our leaders. We need genuine cadres.</p>
<p>At the congress, we are going to tie to the plough the oxen that pull. If you are a cadre working with our enemy, we will not tolerate.</p>
<p>This is a people’s party. We want to start counting each other. Those who are not with us can go out. This party is now too strong, it will not split.</p></blockquote>
<p>Some MDC bigwigs are suspected of working with ZANU PF to destabilise the party.</p>
<p>Secretary general Douglas Mwonzora, who recently met ZANU PF-sympathetic MDC-T president Thokozani Khupe over High Court Judge Justice’ ruling, has denied any links with the ruling party.</p>

<blockquote><p>Dr Thokozani Khupe welcomes and accepts today’s judgement of the High court of Zimbabwe in Harare.</p>
<p>This victory not only vindicates Dr Khupe and those in the MDC that has always stood for principle over political expediency but it’s a victory for all democratic forces and the rule of law in our country.</p>
<p>This judgement is also a damning indictment to the many so-called legal scholars in the broader the democratic movement who for the past years like the disgraced biblical Pontius Pilate looked the other way when the movement was veering off our founding values with such alarming impunity.</p>
<p>Justice Edith Mushore, reminded us again what it is to be Zimbabwean by choosing courage and integrity over bigotry, misogyny, cowardice and mobocracy.</p>
<p>It is therefore not surprising that those who seek power through violence and fraud are not able to successfully impeach her “Ratio decidendi” and are descending to their lowest weapon of choice which is personal insults and attacks on our judiciary.</p>
<p>Dr Khupe will soon be contacting the SG of the party, Dr Mwonzora, and other elected leaders to see how best they can implement the ruling of the High Court.</p>
<p>Dr Khupe has noted and welcomes the intention by some to appeal the judgment as this will give the superior courts an opportunity to confirm the universal rights of all Zimbabweans to fair and justadministrative justice within any social organisation of their choice.</p>
<p>Dr Khupe demands all members of our movement to unite and be magnanimous at this time irrespective of their chosen side in this debacle.</p>
<p>Honourable Advocate Nelson Chamisa and those close to him must not be verbally abused or belittled in any way, shape or form. He remains an indispensable leader of our movement and to that end, he deserves the uttermost respect from all disciplined cadres of our movement.</p>

<p>We have just been advised of the High Court of Zimbabwe judgement issued by Justice Edith Mushore today.</p>
<p>We fundamentally disagree with the judgement.</p>
<p>The choice of leaders of any political party, the world over is the sole preserve of the members of that party.</p>
<p>It can never be a judicial process. Equally, the actions, activities and programmes of a political party, being a voluntary organisation whose existence is protected by the Constitution, is the sole preserve of the members that party.</p>
<p>In the past few months, over 500 000 members of the MDC have been involved in a process of electing their leaders at lower levels, from branch to the province. More particularly, over 10 200 branches, 1 958 wards, 210 districts and 13 provinces have been elected.</p>
<p>In just a few weeks’ time, the MDC will complete the process of democratically electing its leadership at a Congress convened in terms of its Constitution.</p>
<p>Strangely, Justice Mushore’s judgement contradicts and totally ignores an earlier judgement of the High Court which ruled on the case of Murimoga versus the MDC.</p>
<p>We are fully aware of the machinations and strategies being deployed by the Mnangagwa administration to destabilize and destroy the people’s project.</p>
<p>We reiterate that Emmerson Mnangagwa is illegitimate and no amount of diversionary tactics will change this fact.</p>
<p>For the avoidance of doubt, preparations for the main Congress are at an advanced stage and 6 800 delegates will attend. That process is irreversible. We shall hold a historic and joyous</p>
<p>Congress under the theme: Defining a new course for Zimbabwe.</p>

<p>Zim Media Review has shed more light on the High Court ruling earlier on Wednesday, nullifying MDC president Nelson Chamisa’s authority as party leader.</p>
<p>However, there are a lot of grey areas regarding the case, which begs the question, is there an invisible hand in the whole saga? Below is the Zim Media Review thread:</p>
<blockquote><p>The case against Chamisa’s party leadership was brought to court in September last year by Elias Mashavira, a party organiser in Gokwe. Mashavira sought a declaration that Chamisa was not the party’s legitimate leader as he had not been endorsed by an extraordinary congress.</p>
<p>On March 14, the court reserved judgment on the matter. This was a week after Chamisa had issued a notice convening the party congress between May 24 and 26.</p>
<p>In April, the court ruled that Mashavira’s case was not urgent. Chamisa’s lawyer Muchadehama said then “There is nothing urgent and that was noted after we argued that it was incompetent for the applicant (Mashavira) to seek a final order in an interim application”.</p>
<p>There’s also ANOTHER pending case brought by 5 MDC members. The affidavit said Sec 64 of MDC constitution says in the event of death or resignation of the president, deputy becomes acting president till the holding of extra-ordinary congress not later than a year to elect a new leader.</p>
<p>One of the applicants said, “My freedom of association has been violated …after the death of my party president in 2018, I am as of the 15th of Feb 2019 being forced to associate myself with the third respondent (Chamisa) who has usurped the role of president unlawfully..”</p>
<p>Is Mashavira, the man who brought the Chamisa case to court, a bonafide member of the MDC as he states in the court papers? Can’t that be verified?</p></blockquote>

High Court Ruling On Chamisa - Fresh Details Emerge

<p>The High Court on Wednesday ruled that Nelson Chamisa’s MDC presidency is unconstitutional and therefore null and void. The Court then ordered the MDC to hold an extraordinary congress to choose legitimate leadership using the party’s 2014 structures. Here is how Zimbabweans reacted on Twitter:</p>

ZIMBABWEANS REACT: High Court Declares Chamisa's Presidency Is Illegal

<p>MDC bigwig, Paurina Gwanyanya-Mpariwa, has turned down the nomination for the post of vice president of the party ahead of the May 24-26 elective Congress.</p>
<p>She has decided to contest for the position of women assembly chairperson after being nominated for two different positions. This was confirmed by the party spokesperson, Jacob Mafume, who said:</p>
<blockquote><p>She just withdrew from contesting for the VP post and opted for women’s assembly chairperson. She was nominated for both posts.</p></blockquote>
<p>While the MDC will have three vice presidents, one position was reserved for a woman.</p>
<p>As of now, Lillian Timveos, Lynnette Karenyi-Kore, and former Zanu PF MP Tracy Mutinhiri will all be looking forward to clinching the post.</p>

<p>MDC bigwigs vying for various positions in the party’s standing committee at the 24-26 May Congress launched their manifestos on Sunday.</p>
<p>Incumbent president Nelson Chamisa was nominated by all the party’s provinces unchallenged.</p>
<p>The post of vice president received one of the highest numbers of nominations with three vice presidents expected to be chosen. One of the slots has been reserved for a woman.</p>
<p>Tendai Biti, the former renegade secretary-general who is vying for the vice presidency, said:</p>
<blockquote><p>The 2019 Congress of the MDC, the fifth congress, is going to be very important for the party. It is an opportunity for starting a new dialogue with the people of Zimbabwe.</p>
<p>It is an opportunity for the people of the MDC to show to the people of Zimbabwe that we are tired of being an opposition.</p>
<p>The party must focus on rural areas and in order to gain State power, we need to go to the village in Humanikwa, in Chiendambuya, in Dotito, so we need to change strategy.</p></blockquote>
<p>Co-vice president, Morgan Komichi, who is fighting to retain his position said:</p>
<blockquote><p>I have stayed with the party, and I have gained two names, General Mao and Abrahama. What does General Mao mean? It means the greatest strategist; Abrahama means a good leader. A good leader is a good follower.</p></blockquote>
<p>Meanwhile, another co-vice president, Elias Mudzuri who at one point was mulling plans to challenge Chamisa, said:</p>
<blockquote><p>I believe that I am a massive pillar of the party, which has never been shaken. The corner of the house does not get removed for no reason.</p></blockquote>
<p>The third co-vice president, Welshman Ncube, claimed that he is a strategic thinker. Said Ncube:</p>
<blockquote><p>I will do all I can, all in my power to render all assistance to president Chamisa. One of the tasks of the president, which has not been spoken to a lot, is the task of providing strategic direction; in short, the task of thinking, Mr president, I will think with you, if necessary to think until it hurts.</p></blockquote>

MDC Vice Presidents Sell Their Manifestos

<p>MDC spokesperson Jacob Mafume said that nominations that were done at the provincial level cannot be overturned.</p>
<p>Mafume said this following reports that numerous appeals have been made from different districts where there were irregularities encountered during the processes. Said Mafume:</p>
<blockquote><p>It is not possible for anyone to wake up and say we must overturn a provincial outcome. How do they do that?</p>
<p>The issue is, if for example, an individual who wanted to contest for treasurer have grounds that they were prejudiced of a win, they would appeal and that will be heard on its merits.</p>
<p>Even if their appeal is successful it would not have a material effect on the delegates who made up the provincial congress to nominate the national leadership. The same people including the losers were a party to that process.</p></blockquote>
<p>MDC president Nelson Chamisa was nominated by all the party’s 13 provinces without a single challenge.</p>
<p>However, disgruntled party members insist that there was a lot of manipulation, fraud and disenfranchisement in the processes.</p>

MDC Congress Nominations Irrevocable

<p>MDC president Nelson Chamisa has the prerogative of appointing some standing committee members in line with the party’s constitution as amended in 2014.</p>
<p>The party held provincial congresses ahead of the elective Congress set for Gweru from 24 to 26 May where various party officials were nominated for different positions</p>
<p>Chamisa was nominated president by all the party’s 13 provinces unchallenged. He is set to be confirmed as the successor to the late Morgan Tsvangirai at the party Congress later this month.</p>
<p>MDC spokesperson Jacob Mafume confirmed that some of the party’s key portfolios will be manned by the president’s appointees. He said:</p>
<blockquote><p>Remember in 2014, the constitution was changed so that the president appoints from the position of secretary-general downwards. This is what the constitution says.</p>
<p>We were taking nominations on the basis that the national council will condone that departure from the constitution.</p>
<p>… The national council looked at the situation and said notwithstanding that the constitution provides for that, the leadership of the standing committee recommended that secretary-general and treasurer-general be elected as well, even though the constitution says otherwise.</p>
<p>We are actually moving from a situation where more were appointed to allow for more to be elected. Skills-based positions will be appointed as the organising and information.</p>
<p>The leadership asked for nominations so that he (Chamisa) will be guided, at least, by what the people want, not necessarily taking exactly that, but to get an indication of the feeling of the executive. Where there is a mismatch in talent, he will then address accordingly.</p></blockquote>

Chamisa To Appoint Key Party Officials

<p>The late MDC founding president Morgan Tsvangirai’s family has backed Nelson Chamisa for the party presidency after he was nominated by all the party’s 13 provinces.</p>
<p>Speaking to NewZimbabwe.com on Monday, Tsvangirai’s younger brother Manase Tsvangirai said:</p>
<blockquote><p>We are very much aware the party MDC is in the process of putting their congress in place and it’s now definite that Mr Chamisa has been nominated by all the provinces.</p>
<p>We wish him well and we wish him all the best. We hope that normalcy will come into place in MDC. As a family, we are saying whoever has been nominated is the right candidate to lead.</p></blockquote>
<p>Manase also dismissed claims made by MDC renegades calling themselves, In Defence of Morgan Tsvangirai Legacy (IDMTL).</p>
<p>The group is seeking to nullify Chamisa’s nomination while demanding for an extra-ordinary Congress for October to choose Tsvangirai’s successor. Manase added:</p>
<blockquote><p>We have heard about the group which is on social media, we are appealing to them to stop abusing the late leader’s name, let him rest in peace.</p>
<p>If they have issues they must discuss with MDC party leaders and join others as Morgan did unite everyone and fight for democratic change in the country.</p>
<p>Chamisa has been nominated and he is now the leader and he has to be respected and we hope he will carry Morgan’s legacy well.</p></blockquote>

Tsvangirai Family Fully Backs Chamisa's Ascendency

<p>MDC president Nelson Chamisa has settled on Tendai Biti and Welshman Ncube to deputise him, a report claims.</p>
<p>8 party heavyweights have been nominated to fill three vice president posts, with one of the trio supposed to be a woman.</p>
<p>Citing an unnamed party insider, <strong><em>263Chat</em></strong> claims that Lynette Karenyi will complete Chamisa’s triumvirate of deputies. The source is quoted as saying:</p>
<blockquote><p>Biti is the most preferred cadre by the President and the structures across the party. His financial and technical prowess is what Chamisa needs by his side.</p>
<p>He has been central to the popular party manifesto dubbed “SMART.” What this document envisages for Zimbabwe across all sectors is fascinating. And surely the man (Biti) deserves a post in the praesidium.</p>
<p>His etiquette and policy articulation at political gatherings all play in his favour for the vice presidency post.</p>
<p>For Professor Welshman, it is not only because of the regional political lenses being applied.</p>
<p>It is his rich political wisdom and extraordinary capacity he has demonstrated since readmission.</p>
<p>His maturity and intellect have gained himself trust from the party.</p>
<p>He applies to reason and is rarely taken over by emotions when decisions are made within the praesidium and standing committee.</p></blockquote>
<p>Party loyalist Morgen Komichi, who is currently one of the co-vice presidents, will reportedly remain a member of the standing committee as secretary for elections;</p>
<blockquote><p>Komichi will be appointed Secretary for elections ultimately becoming a member of the Standing Committee. His loyalty is unquestionable and the President will be delighted to have him in the most crucial organ of the party.</p></blockquote>

Chamisa Opts For Biti, Ncube & Karenyi For Deputies - Report

<p>All but two of the MDC’s Standing Committee positions will be fiercely contested at the 24-26 May elective Congress as not a single nominee has so far declined the nomination.</p>
<p>The party has 8 nominations for the post of vice president while the constitution allows for only 3 vice presidents. A “Waterloo” is a decisive or final political defeat or setback.</p>
<p>Since the party does not allow an individual to contest for more than one position at Congress, it means that 5 of the 8 VP nominations will become ordinary card-carrying members after the Congress.</p>
<p>The eight bigwigs are Welshman Ncube, Elias Mudzuri, Morgen Komichi, Tendai Biti, Lynnet Karenyi-Kore, Paurina Mpariwa, Lilian Timveos and Tracy Mutinhiri.</p>
<p>Party spokesperson Jacob Mafume revealed that the party’s last National Council meeting resolved that candidates nominated for various positions will be given a short period of time to either accept or decline their nominations. Said Mafume:</p>
<blockquote><p>The party mandated the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) running the Congress to organise caucuses for those contesting each other to table before members and the public what they will offer the party and country if elected.</p>
<p>These debates shall be open to the public, the media and shall be streamed live on the party’s official social media platforms. The commission shall appoint independent moderators for these debates.</p></blockquote>
<p>Party president Nelson Chamisa and Tabitha Khumalo, who has been nominated for the position of chairperson, will not be contested at Congress.</p>

MDC Provincial Congresses- Full List Of Standing Committee Nominees

<h4><strong>Resolutions of the National Council meeting of 27 April 2019 held at Morgan Tsvangirai House, Harare</strong></h4>
<p>The MDC National Council met today, the 27th of April 2019, and reviewed the Congress progress.</p>
<p>The Council received a report from the organising department.</p>
<p>The report included the completion of 11 200 branch Congresses,1 958 Ward Congresses,210 District Congresses and 13 Provincial Congresses.</p>
<p>All nominees have been given up to Tuesday to accept nominations or to withdraw. Where more than two candidates accept the nomination, they are encouraged to discuss in the spirit of consensus building.</p>
<p>The Electoral Commission shall then produce ballots on every position where more than one candidate decides to contest.</p>
<p>The positions to be contested include the President, Vice President, National Chairperson, Secretary General and Treasurer General.</p>
<p>The report included results of the nominations conducted at Provincial Congresses for the three wings of the party including the Women and Youth Assemblies.</p>
<p>A report from the National Ind ependent Electoral Commission was also presented detailing how elections were conducted.</p>
<p>The Party mandated the Commission to organise Caucuses for those contesting each other to table before members and the public what they will offer the party and country if elected.</p>
<p>These debates shall be open to the public, the media and shall be streamed live on the Party’s official social media platforms for everyone to see.</p>
<p>The Commission shall appoint independent moderators for these debates.</p>
<p>The National Council also resolved to reserve a seat for a female Vice President and modalities for the same shall be finalized by the Electoral Commission.</p>
<p>Finally, the Council gazetted the calendar which includes the following: the 3rd of May (Sikhala Memorial), 4th of May (Morgan Tsvangirai Memorial) and the Caucuses to run from the 5th to the 20th of May 2019.</p>

FULL TEXT: Resolutions Of The MDC National Council

<p>MDC president Nelson Chamisa revealed that his party is considering the most effective strategy in dealing with ZANU PF.</p>
<p>The party’s elective Congress set for May this year will be used to examine possible strategies available for the “alternative government”. Said Chamisa:</p>
<blockquote><p>Do we participate in elections? Is an election the best form to achieve reforms? Calling for reforms, is it a good strategy? Dialogue, is it a good strategy? We will examine all our strategies going forward and what will be effective.</p>
<p>We can’t be engaging externally before we deal with internal hygiene. At the moment, we are focused on Congress, but that does not mean we have removed our eyes from the ball.</p>
<p>When we finish our congress and our members have endorsed a strategy road map, then we will come out stronger and geared to offer a new proposition as an alternative government because we are not an opposition.</p></blockquote>
<p>The MDC has in the past been using demonstrations as well as engaging other regional countries to push the ruling Zanu PF party to the negotiating table.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Chamisa has been nominated by all the party’s internal and external provinces as the man to replace the late Morgan Tsvangirai as MDC president ahead of the May 24-26 elective Congress.</p>

Chamisa Casts Doubt On MDC's Participation In Future Elections

<p>MDC president Advocate Nelson Chamisa has been nominated by all 13 MDC Provinces to be the party’s next president for the next 5 years ahead of the elective Congress to be held in May in Gweru.</p>
<p>Chamisa is the only leader who is not to be contested at Congress. He is therefore set to be automatically elected at the Congress since nominations cannot be done from the floor.</p>
<p>South Africa was the last province to hold its 5th provincial congress and fell in line with all the other provinces in nominating Chamisa unchallenged.</p>

Chamisa Wins ALL 13 MDC Provincial Nominations Unchallenged

<p>MDC president Nelson Chamisa is reportedly in a quandary in choosing his post-Congress vice presidents.</p>
<p>Currently, Chamisa has Elias Mudzuri, Morgen Komichi and Welshman Ncube as his three vice presidents. His close allies, Ncube, Komichi and Biti are also contesting for the vice president post while there is a need to have a woman as VP.</p>
<p>Eight people have received nominations for the VP post. These include Ncube, Biti, Komichi, Lillian Timveos, Lynette Karenyi-Kore, Murisi Zwizwai, Paurina Mupariwa and Theresa Makone.</p>
<p>An MDC senior party official who spoke to Newsday said:</p>
<blockquote><p>Some want the party to maintain one vice-president because, as the alternative government, it’s important to show the country what our Cabinet would look like.</p>
<p>Further, having a lot of VPs is not good for our succession matrix. We learnt this when our late leader Morgan Tsvangirai died and there were these nasty fights.</p></blockquote>
<p>Party spokesperson Jacob Mafume revealed that the MDC will have 3 vice president for administrative purposes. Said Mafume:</p>
<blockquote><p>We are going to have three vice-presidents. They are going to come from an electoral process. There have been nominations for that position. These are functions, these are not rewards and this is not the State presidency.</p>
<p>These are functions at a senior level. We are following the example of social democratic parties, in Germany and other places, where the vice-president is an issue of functionality.</p></blockquote>
<p>Some officials are reportedly pushing for one VP slot to be reserved for a woman, among them secretary general Douglas Mwonzora, Lynette Karenyi-Kore and Paurina Mpariwa-Gwanyanya who are standing committee members.</p>

Chamisa In A Fix Over VP Choices

<p>The MDC is set to spend $2 million at the Congress which starts in Gweru on 24 May this year. 6 000 delegates are expected to grace the occasion where 10 standing committee members will be directly elected.</p>
<p>Current president, Nelson Chamisa looks certain to retain his post after all the 12 provinces that have conducted congresses have nominated him unopposed. Only South Africa is yet to hold its Congress.</p>
<p>Chamisa revealed that the number of expected delegates will be six thousand. He said:</p>
<blockquote><p>We have a membership of over a million people, but as we go for congress we will only have 6 000 delegates attending in a representative capacity, but we want to ensure that the leaders are acceptable not just to our members of the 6 000 delegate, but also to the general populace. This is why we are opening a campaign season in the form of town hall meetings.</p></blockquote>
<p>Meanwhile, party spokesperson Jacob Mafume confirmed that the cost of hosting the Congress will run into millions of RTGS dollars as the prices of goods and services are volatile. Said Mafume:</p>
<blockquote><p>Treasury is working on the figures, but we can’t even conclusively say how much will be used because prices are changing on a daily bases and, therefore, it becomes difficult to say, but it will run into millions.</p>
<p>… We have to rely on our members and well-wishers, especially seeing that government is withholding our share from the Political Parties Finance Act, we have not been given our money so we will find alternative ways.</p></blockquote>

MDC 5th Congress Nominees, United Kingdom

<p>MDC president Nelson Chamisa, who will most likely be uncontested at the party Congress set for next month, has assured losing rivals that they will not be abandoned.</p>
<p>Chamisa has won all the 12 nominations for the presidency unchallenged from the 12 party provinces that have held congresses. Only one province is yet to hold its congress.</p>
<p>Speaking after getting his 12th nomination, Chamisa assured would-be-losers that they will not be left behind. He said:</p>
<blockquote><p>Our emphasis is unity, our emphasis is inclusive politics, but also dynamic renewal and regeneration of the organisation, democracy is not about winners and losers, it is a win-win platform so nobody will be left behind.</p>
<p>… MDC is the home of democracy, the home of excellence and the home of alternative politics that is what is confirmed by our processes so far, but more fundamentally, this is a humbling honour to our efforts in leadership to try and ensure that the legacy and vision for a fully democratic Zimbabwe is realised.</p></blockquote>
<p>Douglas Mwonzora, the current secretary general and Elias Mudzuri, a co-vice president were gunning for the presidency but neither has received a nomination for the coveted post.</p>
<p>A party insider who spoke to Newsday claimed that former rebel, Welshman Ncube will likely get the vice presidency due to his Matabeleland origins. Said the source:</p>
<blockquote><p>Ncube is needed as a vice-president because of the Matabeleland vote, he holds sway in that region and MDC will be in a better position with him as a vice-president not by appointment, but he has only received two nominations so far, making it difficult for him to smell victory.</p></blockquote>

Chamisa To Offer Mwonzora, Mudzuri Lifeline

<p>The MDC has completed six Provincial Congresses with structures electing Provincial leaders and nominating National leaders.</p>
<p>The Process involves all three wings of the party including the Women and Youth Assemblies.</p>
<p>Structures of the party are travelling from different corners of their Provinces to a single centre where elections are conducted.</p>
<p>The process has been smooth in North America, Matabeleland South, Matabeleland North, Midlands, Mashonaland West and Mashonaland East.</p>
<p>Today the same process will take place in respect of Mashonaland Central.</p>
<p>The commitment demonstrated by structures highlights the belief of Zimbabweans in democracy. In some provinces, depending on the number of districts, the process has been long yet the delegates have displayed maturity and patience.</p>
<p>The MDC is in the process of strengthening people’s alternative.</p>
<p>The National Congress shall be a festival of democracy and ideas where structures will debate policy and institutional reforms in an endeavour to oil the party machinery.</p>

FULL TEXT: MDC Midlands Province Successfully Holds Congress

<p>MDC president Nelson Chamisa is yet to face a challenger for the presidency ahead of the elective Congress set for 24-26 May 2019.</p>
<p>Chamisa has been nominated by all the four provinces that have conducted pre-Congress congresses.</p>
<p>Midlands became the fourth of MDC’s 13 administrative provinces to make its nominations ahead of the party’s Congress. The nominations were done on Wednesday and results announced on Thursday morning.</p>
<p>The MDC has 10 internal provinces which correspond to the country’s administrative provinces. The three external provinces are North America, the United Kingdom and South Africa.</p>
