The Minister of ICT, Postal and Courier Services <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Tatenda_Mavetera">Tatenda Mavetera</a> recently opened a pilot telehealth centre in Chikomba West Constituency, Mashonaland East Province.
The Ministry of Health and Childcare, in conjunction with the ICT Ministry, is set to launch the programme countrywide soon. Mavetera posted on X this Saturday:

Patients can talk to their health care provider live over the phone or video chat, send and receive messages from health care providers using secure messaging, email, and secure file exchange, or use remote monitoring so the health care provider can check on the patient at home.
The patient might use a device to gather vital signs to help his/her healthcare provider stay informed on their progress.

Minister Mavetera Opens Pilot Telehealth Centre In Chikomba

The Government of Japan has donated US$774 000 to Zimbabwe through the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) to assist the country’s fight against a cholera outbreak.
The fund will specifically target the most vulnerable communities in Manicaland Province, which is the hardest-hit province in the country.
According to the Ministry of Health’s cholera statistics, as of 01 February 2024, Manicaland had 1 102 confirmed cholera cases, with Harare, which has the second-highest number of cases, having recorded 663 confirmed cases.
UNICEF Zimbabwe Representative, Dr. Tajudeen Oyewale, expressed gratitude to Japan for the funding. Said Oyewale:

We are extremely grateful to the Government of Japan for this support. It exemplifies their commitment to the people of Zimbabwe, addressing the urgent needs of affected communities and building resilience against public health emergencies.
The grant will provide a comprehensive range of life-saving support, including access to safe water, critical hygiene materials, healthcare, nutrition, child protection, and other essential social services.
It arrives at a crucial time in the cholera response, as Zimbabwe strives to allocate resources to urgently address and interrupt the cycle of cholera transmission.

According to the Ministry of Health, as of 01 February 2024, Zimbabwe had 22 105 suspected Cholera cases, 2 388 confirmed cases, 21 378 recoveries, 71 confirmed deaths and 421 suspected deaths.
As of 31 January 2024, a total of 103 735 people had received the Oral Cholera Vaccine.

Japan Donates US$774 000 Towards Zimbabwe's Cholera Response In Manicaland

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has trained 987 nurses on Rapid Antigen RDTs (Rapid Diagnostic Tests) for cholera with support from the World Health Organisation (WHO).
In a recent cholera update, WHO said that this initiative allows for faster results, enabling prompt medical intervention and outbreak containment. It said:

Traditional cholera diagnosis often relies on cultural methods, which require sophisticated equipment and trained personnel. This can prolong diagnosis and delay treatment, particularly in remote areas.
Rapid Antigen RDTs offer a game-changer, faster results as RDTs deliver results within 15-30 minutes, enabling prompt medical intervention and outbreak containment. Nurses can readily perform RDTs, even in resource-limited settings.
With trained nurses equipped for RDTs, diagnosis becomes readily available at local health facilities, eliminating the need for patients to travel long distances to centralized laboratories.
Recognising the crucial role of nurses in frontline healthcare, the Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) has given priority to their training in RDTs.
This promotes the quick identification of cholera cases, and early diagnosis allows for prompt isolation and treatment, which minimizes transmission risks.
Furthermore, accurate and timely diagnosis improves case management, leading to better patient outcomes, as it guides optimal treatment.
Decentralised testing also facilitates comprehensive community-level surveillance, enabling early detection and outbreak control.

Zimbabwe is currently grappling with a cholera outbreak and as of 31 January 2024, the country had 21 835 suspected Cholera cases, 2 387 confirmed cases, 21 134 recoveries, 71 confirmed cases and 416 suspected deaths.

Zimbabwe Trains 987 Nurses On Rapid Cholera Testing

Residents of Cowdray Park suburb in Bulawayo have been advised to buy their meat from reputed licensed butcheries rather than backyards.
This follows unverified reports of individuals selling donkey meat to unsuspecting customers.
Social media platforms have been awash with reports that several donkeys in Cowdray Park have been found slaughtered, with parts like liver removed.
Donkey meat is allegedly being sold to unsuspecting locals who reside in new stands in Cowdray Park.
In an interview with <a href="https://cite.org.zw/residents-advised-to-buy-from-reputable-butcheries-in-wake-of-donkey-meat-concerns/">CITE’s</a> Senzeni Ncube, Ward 5 Councillor Ashton Mhlanga said although he has not received official complaints from the residents, he is aware of the social media reports. Said Mhlanga:

I have heard the issue from social media but I have not received official reports from the residents.
But my advice to residents in Cowdray Park is that they should buy meat from reputable licensed butcheries.
We have many reputable butcheries here. There is one at a shopping centre at Caravan, another one at Athens and another one located at the terminus.
Residents should buy their meat there so that they are not in danger of eating donkey meat.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson in Bulawayo Province Inspector Abednico Ncube also confirmed to CITE that police were aware of the reports from social media. He said:
<blockquote>
We have not yet received a report that there is donkey meat being sold, but we are seeing it from social media. People should buy meat from reputable butcheries.
Buying meat from street hawkers is a crime and the residents will end up consuming meat that died on its own without them having slaughtered it as per their culture.
We are appealing to the members of the public to listen to the word of advice from the police and city health that only licensed butcheries dealing with meat and having certificates should be used for consumption. We are saying no to meat sold in buckets by people on foot.

Donkey meat is not a common food item in Zimbabwe even though it is a nutritious food that is rich in protein, iron, calcium, and phosphorous.
Donkey meat is considered a delicacy in some cultures and is consumed in many countries around the world, and in some regions, the meat is believed to have medicinal properties and is used to treat various ailments.

Donkey Meat Rumours: Residents Urged To Buy Meat From Reputable Butcheries

Renowned gospel musician and pastor, Charles Charamba, has called on the Government to include the fight against drug and substance abuse in the new curriculum.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/include-drug-abuse-in-school-curriculum-says-charamba/">H-Metro</a>, Charamba stated that learners at the Early Childhood Development (ECD) level should be taught about the dangers of drug and substance abuse. He said:
<blockquote>
Just like what happened when HIV and Aids was first discovered in Zimbabwe, it was included in the curriculum and people got to know about it.
I am of the view that children in early classes as ECD have the right to know some of these things like drug and substance abuse.
It’s no longer a secret that this monster is now out of hand and we can only help each other by promoting this awareness from the grassroots.
I also think that rehabilitation alone is not enough to address this issue but we can also teach our people at a young age.

Charamba also implored authorities to raise awareness about other social ills like sexual abuse in early grades. Said the veteran singer:

Besides drug and substance abuse, children in early grades should be taught to be aware of some social ills like sexual abuse.
There is nothing to hide here as we want to save future generations from some of these social issues.
We should not fold our hands but raise awareness about these and other issues in the new curriculum.
We should also preach about these issues at church to ensure that we reach out to many people.

Last year, in October, the Government set up a task force to tackle drug and substance abuse.
Last month, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) released the names of 30 drug barons and suppliers who were convicted by the courts.

Musician Charles Charamba Calls For Inclusion Of Drug Abuse In School Curriculum

Zimbabwe will this Saturday, 27 January receive the third batch of 294 000 oral cholera vaccines (OCV), bringing the total number of vaccine doses available in the country to 892 000, reported <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/zim-takes-delivery-of-cholera-vaccines/">The Herald</a>.
The country was allocated 2.3 million oral cholera vaccine doses from the international coordinating group on vaccine provision, with the vaccination campaign set to commence on 29 January.
Speaking after receiving a consignment of cholera medicines and supplies worth US$265 000 from UNICEF in Harare on Friday, Health and Child Care Minister Dr Douglas Mombeshora said:
<blockquote>
We are waiting for the last batch and hoping that by tomorrow we will receive the third batch of 294 000 doses to make them 892 000. We should start our vaccination campaign from January 29 up to February 2.
But we are expecting 2.3 million doses so we will be vaccinating as they come. The second tranche of another 894 000 doses will be coming and we will dispatch it until the 2.3 million doses are completed.
</blockquote>
He said the campaign would initially target hotspots, mainly Manicaland, Masvingo, Harare, Mashonaland Central, and Mashonaland West provinces.
The supplies received by the Government yesterday comprised antibiotics, oral rehydration salts, infusion giving sets, and other commodities used in the treatment of the disease. Added Mombeshora:

Amongst the reported cholera cases, 31 per cent were under 15 years of age, while 14 per cent were children under the age of five.
As we can see today, most of the commodities we have received will cater for children, and vulnerable people and these commodities will go a long way in reducing the mortality in children.

As of 25 January 2024, Zimbabwe had 20 678 suspected Cholera cases, 2 332 confirmed cases, 19 971 recoveries, 71 confirmed deaths and 389 suspected deaths.
60 out of the 63 districts in Zimbabwe have reported cholera cases and poor water supplies, sanitation, and hygiene have been identified as the major contributors to the outbreak.

Zimbabwe Takes Delivery Of 294K Cholera Vaccines

The Harare City Council has conceded that the removal of street vendors has been a failure.
The Government recently ordered the local authority to remove vendors from the streets in the Central Business District to curb the spread of cholera which has since been detected in almost all districts in the country.
On Wednesday, several senior Government officials met with the media to give an update on the state of water, sanitation, hygiene and current cholera outbreak control in Zimbabwe.
Speaking at the meeting, City of Harare health services department director Dr Prosper Chonzi said (<a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/we-have-failed-to-remove-vendors-harare-city-council/">via Chronicle</a>):
<blockquote>
An order was made for us to remove all the food vendors in Harare to ensure that our streets are clean. But as you have seen we haven’t done very well there.
The general economy is playing against us. We have been playing hide and seek after vendors and it isn’t working.
We are glad now that the Government has come up with Chenesa Harare, and if we clean up for now then we come up with medium and long-term plans to maintain the clean environment that’s there.
As the Director of Health in the City, I’m not happy with the vending situation in the city, it’s plain against what we are trying to achieve and contain the outbreak. And trying to enforce not giving us the intended results.
</blockquote>
Chonzi said there must be a change of mindset and residents should know that they risk contracting diseases by buying food from uninspected places.

Harare City Council Concedes Failure To Remove Street Vendors

The Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) in Zimbabwe has provided an update on the cholera situation in the country. As of 24 January 2024, there were 20,446 suspected Cholera cases, with 2,324 confirmed. The ministry noted that 19,711 people recovered from the disease while there have been 71 confirmed deaths and 381 suspected deaths.
In a previous update, the ministry noted that as of January 23, 2024, there have been 20,121 suspected cases of cholera, with 2,281 cases confirmed. Fortunately, 19,442 people have recovered from the disease, but there have been 71 confirmed deaths and 376 suspected deaths.
To combat the spread of cholera, the Minister of Health, Dr. Douglas Mombeshora, mentioned several measures that are being taken. These include activating the Incident Management System, establishing 134 treatment camps and 33 Oral Rehydration Points across the country, deploying Rapid Response Teams for on-site treatment, implementing Operation Chenesa Harare, ensuring access to safe drinking water through drilling boreholes and distributing water treatment supplies, engaging with the community through information dissemination, procuring necessary medicines and supplies, and securing the Oral Cholera Vaccine, which will be administered in affected areas starting from January 29. Mombeshora said:
<blockquote>
The vaccination campaign is expected to start from the 29th of January in [a] phased approach to the hot spots. This is because the doses are not enough to cover the whole country. And then roll on to the other affected districts as we receive more vaccines. The challenge is that there is a shortage of vaccine in the world because cholera is not in Zimbabwe alone. So, all other countries that have reported cholera are also getting the same vaccine from the same source. So, it’s now controlled by the WHO. Otherwise only the rich countries will wipe out the vaccines before others get them.
</blockquote>
Observers believe that the cholera outbreak is caused by water shortages in some parts of the country, particularly in densely populated cities like Harare. They also attribute the outbreak to the failure of local authorities to maintain proper sewage systems and garbage collection. The situation remains a challenge, and efforts are ongoing to find a lasting solution to this waterborne disease.
To stop the spread of cholera, individuals can take several important steps. They should ensure access to clean drinking water by treating sources or providing bottled water. Improving sanitation practices, such as proper waste disposal and maintaining clean toilets, is crucial. Educating communities about regular handwashing and hygiene is vital. Administering the oral cholera vaccine, seeking prompt treatment, managing the environment, and actively participating in community efforts are also essential. By implementing these actions, individuals can play a significant role in preventing the spread of cholera and protecting their communities from this waterborne disease.

UPDATE 24 January 2024: Zimbabwe Records 20,446 Suspected Cholera Cases

Dr Vivek Solanki, who is among the leading medical experts in the country, has urged the Government to review the regulations on advertisements to allow medical services providers to advertise the services they offer, <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/solanki-calls-for-medical-adverts/">H-Metro reported</a>.
Speaking during the Zim Community Trailblazers Awards ceremony in Harare on Friday night, Solanki said:
<blockquote>
This is where the problem lies, we are not allowed to advertise, and we cannot put billboards, or adverts in newspapers or magazines to educate the public to say these facilities are available here.
But Coca-Cola, cooking oil advertise, why are they allowed to have a billboard and I cannot have a billboard? I think there is a problem there.
People like us, have to push the button and enlighten the authorities that we have to make the changes, we have to assist.
We have assisted with an open-heart at Parirenyatwa Hospital but we need them to support us in our needs.
I asked them again that we have a need, we need to look into our regulations regarding advertising for the health sector.
When we land in Johannesburg, Nairobi and India, and Dubai, there are billboards and overall advertising for the medical facilities.
Yet we have the same back home and people are not aware of it.

Solanki, who has a special interest in Regenerative Medicine, Aesthetics, Dermatology, and Aviation medicine, added:
<blockquote>
I have been in business for 37 years, and people do not know about it, that’s purely because of limitations of dissemination of information about where we are and what we can do.
We need to encourage each other and hold each other’s hand because nobody else will, we do not have the finances to support the health sector.
The younger generation and specialists from Zimbabwe can see from our examples and know that it can be done.
Your future is out here in Zimbabwe. Only Zimbabweans can make a difference, not foreigners, not foreign investment.
Our President talks about medical tourism and the Trauma Centre is big in medical tourism, a lot of foreign patients from all over come here.
I ask; how will the foreigners know when Zimbabweans don’t know what facilities are available in Zimbabwe?
The whole world is a global village today, so whatever technology is available in London, Durban is also available in Harare.

Dr Vivek Solanki Calls For Relaxation Of Medical Advertising Rules

The Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) says it has drilled 77 boreholes in cholera hotspots across the country out of a target of more than 140.
The Government has also mandated ZINWA to strengthen the water quality assurance tests as part of the cholera containment measures in rural and urban areas.
ZINWA corporate communications and marketing manager, Marjorie Munyonga, told the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/140-boreholes-for-cholera-hotspots/">Chronicle</a> that they are fast-tracking the drilling of boreholes in cholera hotspots. She said:

ZINWA has drilled 77 boreholes across the country to help improve the water and sanitation situation of communities as part of measures to fight cholera.
</blockquote>
Munyonga said boreholes are being drilled at institutions such as clinics, hospitals, schools and villages in cholera hotspots such as Harare, Glendale and Mapanza in Chiredzi.
The boreholes are being equipped with solar systems and bush pumps.
Munyonga said 38 boreholes have been drilled in Harare, 33 in Manicaland, three in Mashonaland West and two in Masvingo province with more expected in other parts of the country. She added:

The drilling of more boreholes is in progress across the country with at least 140 boreholes having already been surveyed and ready for drilling as of January 17, 2024.
The authority has also put in place a raft of measures and strategies to help prevent the outbreak and spread of cholera in the areas where it provides potable water.

Munyonga also said ZINWA has stocked water treatment chemicals for small towns, growth points and rural service centres that provide water to ensure no disruptions to the water supply. She said:

All water supply stations are adequately stocked with at least three months’ supply of water treatment chemicals.
ZINWA is also stockpiling critical plant spares to help reduce stations’ downtime.

Zimbabwe is currently in the throes of a cholera outbreak that has so far claimed 71 lives, while more than 340 others are suspected to have succumbed to the disease.
As of 18 January 2024, the country had reported 19 090 suspected cholera cases, 2 231 confirmed cases and 18 340 recoveries.
Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by bacteria and occurs when one consumes food and water contaminated with cholera bacteria.
The disease causes severe dehydration and diarrhoea which could lead to death within hours if untreated.
Most people infected with cholera do not develop any symptoms. However, the bacteria is present in human waste for 1-10 days after infection and is shed back into the environment, potentially infecting other people.

ZINWA Targets 140 Boreholes For Cholera Hotspots

Zimbabwe is this week set to take delivery of a consignment of close to one million cholera vaccines from the International Coordinating Group (ICG), which will be delivered in batches.
<a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/zim-receives-one-million-cholera-vaccines">The Sunday Mail</a> reported that the Ministry of Health and Child Care has secured about 2 2 million doses of the oral cholera vaccine (OCV).
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Child Care Dr Aspect Maunganidze said they will roll out a vaccination programme starting on 29 February. He said:

We expect these vaccines in Zimbabwe anytime next week (this week). We then intend to start the vaccination programme from February 29, 2024, in a phased approach in the hotspots.
We will be targeting the hotspot areas, also known as Prioritised Areas for Multi-Sectoral Interventions, where cases are being reported currently.
These areas include targeted districts in the most affected provinces of Harare, Manicaland, Masvingo, Midlands, Mashonaland East, Mashonaland West and Mashonaland Central.

The districts targeted are Mutare Rural and Urban, Buhera, Gutu, Chiredzi, Mwenezi, Mberengwa, Zvishavane, Uzumba-Maramba-Pfungwe, Kariba, Mazowe, Mbire and Mt Darwin.
In Harare province, Dr Maunganidze said, vaccines will be administered in Kuwadzana, Glen View, Budiriro, Mbare, Southlea Park, Highfield, Glen Norah and Chitungwiza.
Maunganidze said everyone above the age of one year will be eligible to receive a dose. He added:

For this campaign, only one dose will be given as opposed to the usual two doses.
One dose will protect the individual for at least six months as opposed to two doses, which have a protection of above three years.
The vaccine is not an end to cholera, but a temporary measure which should be complemented with tangible investment in safe water provision, health education on hygiene practices, increase in sanitation coverages, elimination of open defecation and removal of solid waste.
The streets need to be clean with no dumping and avoidance of food vending and preparation from undesignated areas.

Zimbabwe Set To Receive One Million Cholera Vaccines

The Ministry of Health and Child Care in Zimbabwe is concerned about the spread of cholera during funeral gatherings. They have urged the public to report all deaths that occur in the community so that health workers can supervise the burials, especially those resulting from diarrheal causes, whether or not they are confirmed cases of cholera. In a statement seen by Pindula News, the ministry observed that funeral gatherings have become super-spreaders of the disease. Read the statement:

The Ministry of Health and Child Care in Zimbabwe as realised that funeral gatherings are acting as super-spreaders of Cholera in Zimbabwe. Therefore, the  Ministry is advising all members of the public to report all deaths that occur in the community and that all burials especially from diarrhoeal causes, whether proven Cholera or not should be supervised by health workers. Eating at burials should be limited.

This comes after the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2024/01/18/zimbabwes-health-ministry-gives-update-on-cholera-outbreak/">ministry issued another statement</a> noting that as of January 17, 2024, there have been 2,223 confirmed cases of cholera in the country. Tragically, 71 people have lost their lives due to this waterborne disease. The ministry has also reported 336 suspected deaths.
The highest number of cholera cases have been confirmed in Manicaland (1045), Harare (663), Mat South (147), Mash West (108), Mat East (106), and Chitungwiza (53). On the other hand, Bulawayo has recorded only three cases, while Mat North has reported just one case. It should be noted that Bulawayo (8) and Matabeleland North (11) have the fewest tests conducted.
Cholera is a serious illness caused by contaminated water or food. It spreads quickly and can lead to severe dehydration and even death if not treated promptly. The ministry is taking this situation seriously and is urging the public to take necessary precautions, such as reporting deaths and limiting eating during burials, to prevent further spread of the disease.
It is important for everyone to be aware of the signs and symptoms of cholera, such as diarrhoea, vomiting, and dehydration, and to seek medical attention if they suspect they or someone they know may be affected. By working together and following the guidance of health workers, the community can help control the spread of cholera and protect each other’s health.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has released an update on the cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe, revealing that as of January 17, 2024, there have been over 2,200 confirmed cases of cholera in the country. In a statement seen by Pindula News, the Ministry also mentioned that at least 70 people have lost their lives due to this waterborne disease. Read the statement:

To combat the spread of cholera, the government has implemented several measures. They have imposed restrictions, including a ban on food at funerals, to prevent further transmission of the disease. Additionally, cholera treatment camps have been established in various areas across the country. The government has also intensified surveillance efforts and engaged local leaders and village health workers in active case detection.
The outbreak occurs when densely populated cities such as Harare and Bulawayo are facing challenges in access to clean water and proper sanitation raising fears that the disease would spread rapidly if not managed in time. Harare, the capital city, is facing prolonged water shortages, with certain neighbourhoods enduring the consequences. The daily water requirement for Harare residents is estimated at 800 million litres, while the city’s current capacity stands at only about 494 million litres. Bulawayo, the second-largest city, has also introduced water rationing measures, leaving some areas without water for 72 hours or more.

Zimbabwe's Health Ministry Gives Update On Cholera Outbreak

A local construction company called Adela Contracting has denied accusations that the company was fetching and selling sewage water in Harare. In a statement seen by Pindula News, Adela Contracting stated that they do not distribute water for profit and have never been involved in such a business. They clarified that their main business is supplying and hiring plant equipment for construction purposes. The company said it was contracted to work on road construction in a specific area, where they diverted rainwater from a stream to facilitate the roadworks. They emphasized that the water collected was not sewage water and was used for road compaction only. Read the statement:

<h3>RE: VIDEO CIRCULATING ON SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS.</h3>
On or about the 15th of January 2024, a video was captured by a lady whose identity has not yet been established/disclosed. In the video, allegations were made to the effect that Adela Contracting (Private) Limited was extracting sewage water and distributing the same for purposes of profit to residents. The video captured the information of the company on the water bowser, as well as persons purporting to work for Adela. This video was published on various social media platforms, namely WhatsApp and Facebook. As of the 16th of January 2024, certain news publications and tabloids had also circulated the video, specifically Zimeye and Doc Dave.
We wish to clarify to the public the following:
1. Adela Contracting is a reputable plant-hire company in Zimbabwe.
2. Our core business is the supply and hire of plant equipment.
3. We do not distribute water for purposes of profit to private individuals or corporates, and our company have never ventured in such business.
4. Adela Contracting was contracted by Runt Dutoit Property Developers, to supply plant and equipment for the purposes of road construction in the Kambanji area, Greystone Park, between Gaydon Drive and Maranzi.
5. In the area in which the video was taken runs a stream of fresh water that crosses Outspan Drive.
6. The mandate of the private company was the diversion of the stream and drainage of any surplus water that would interfere with the roadworks.
7. Due to the heavy rains that have been experienced over the past few weeks, a pool of rainwater had accumulated by stream which pool needed to be diverted.
8. The water bowser captured in the video was draining water from the pool to enable further development of the road.
9. The drained water was used for road compaction.
10. We would like to emphasize that this water is NOT sewage water.
11. Furthermore, the area itself does NOT have any sewer lines such that sewage water can be found in the locality.
12. For emphasis, the water collected in the video was NOT distributed to residents or any person whatsoever outside the locality.
13. ADELA CONTRACTING IS NOT AND HAS NEVER BEEN INVOLVED IN THE DISTRIBUTION OF WATER FOR PROFIT OR CONSUMPTION OR HOUSEHOLD USE.
The matter has been reported to the relevant authorities and efforts are underway to establish the source of this information. We urge the public to desist from continued circulation of this alarmingly false and defamatory piece of information.

Adela Construction Denies Fetching And Selling Sewage Water

Four people, among them a pregnant woman from Gwanda, died of cholera early this month at a religious shrine in Beitbridge.
The pregnant woman, who had contracted the disease, went to the shrine to seek help after refusing to be assisted by health officials due to religious beliefs.
According to the Gwanda district cholera situational report released by the Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) on 13 January, the deceased, including the pregnant woman, were apostolic sect members.
The pregnant woman reportedly complained of a headache and nausea on 29 December 2023 and assumed she was having labour pains. <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200022101/cholera-kills-4-at-apostolic-sect-shrine">Read the report</a>:

She was taken to a religious shrine in the Beitbridge District in the Mazunga area for assistance in delivery.
While she was there, the birth attendant and custodian of the shrine contracted cholera along with 12 other family members and neighbours. The birth attendant and two males died.
The Beitbridge MoHCC rapid response team (RRT) attended to the outbreak on January 1 and carried out contact tracing and treatment of symptomatic contacts found.
The deceased was initially hidden from the RRT by family members and later identified by other community members. The deceased refused medical attention from the RRT members.
The family then tried to shift her to another religious shrine in the Mberengwa Masase area, however, she died along the way on January 2.
Her death was reported to the police and was placed at the Gwanda Provincial Hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem.

The family, however, did not disclose that the deceased was a contact of a confirmed cholera death.
On 09 January, the body of the deceased was taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals for a post-mortem and buried on the same day at Jonclyn Resettlement.

Four People Succumb To Cholera At An Apostolic Sect Shrine

The Zimbabwe Red Cross Society (ZRCS) says it is supporting the Ministry of Health and Childcare in its response to the cholera outbreak in Chiredzi District, which is among the country’s cholera hotspots.
Chiredzi had recorded 45 new suspected cholera cases as of last Sunday, placing a huge strain on an already weak healthcare system.
ZRCS secretary-general Elias Hwenga told <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200022110/red-cross-responds-to-cholera-outbreak-in-chiredzi">NewsDay</a> that they have set up a cholera treatment centre (CTC) in the district. He said:

The Zimbabwe Red Cross Society in support of the Health and Child Care Ministry’s cholera outbreak response in Chiredzi has set up a cholera treatment centre [CTC)] as cases spike in the district.
We have also established a community oral rehydration point to deal with moderate cases, easing pressure on the CTC and other health facilities.

Hwenga revealed that ZRCS, in collaboration with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has launched an emergency appeal to intervene. He said:

According to the Ministry of Health and Childcare, as of Sunday, 14 January, a cumulative total of 18 100 suspected cholera cases, 68 laboratory-confirmed deaths, 323 suspected cholera deaths 2 065 laboratory-confirmed cases were reported across the country.

Red Cross Responds To Cholera Outbreak In Chiredzi

Harare residents have raised concerns over the shortage of public toilets in the central business district as the majority are closed or inaccessible.
The development comes as cholera is fast spreading not only in Harare but also across the whole country.
The toilets at Copacabana rank, Bata at the corner of Leopold Takawira and Bank Streets, Market Square, Harare Gardens and the Flyover to Mbare downtown were not working on Sunday, 14 January according to a <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/harare-battles-acute-public-toilets-shortage/">Herald report</a>.
Those at Simon Muzenda Bus Terminus and Africa Unity Square were functional, but using buckets.
The rest of the public toilets have been converted into pay toilets, which many people cannot afford.
Harare City Council spokesperson Stanley Gama told The Herald that some of the toilets were vandalised while others are closed when there is no water. Said Gama:

There are only two toilets that were vandalised in Harare Gardens that are closed whilst we wait for the fittings. 
Others are functional, but are at times closed when there is no water in the CBD.
The only time there is no water in the CBD is when there is no power at our distribution centres.
The vandalised toilets will be fixed soon and so we are working with ZESA to find a solution that we have dedicated uninterrupted supply at our water distribution centres.

Harare Faces Acute Public Toilets Shortage

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Nick Mangwana has explained the viral picture showing health workers administering drips on cholera patients under a tree in Chiredzi.
The picture, which was published online, shows health workers at one of the so-called “community rehydration centres” at Mapanza in Chiredzi administering intravenous (IV) infusion to patients sprawled on the ground under a tree.
The drip was hanging from the tree branches.
Posting on X (formerly Twitter) this Monday, Mangwana said the patients were being attended to by a Rapid Response Team that had been dispatched to treat them on-site. He said:

When a Cholera case or cholera outbreak is registered, Health Authorities will dispatch a Rapid Response Team to the place.
The suspected cases are promptly treated-onsite because when it comes to cholera treatment, every minute counts.
Whilst treatment is done tents will organized and pitched. This was the case in the Mapanza area of Chiredzi.
The current cholera outbreak is affecting several countries in the region. According to WHO, the long-term solution for cholera control lies in economic development and universal access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s spokesman George Charamba on Sunday hit back at criticism that the Government had failed to invest in a functioning health service. He wrote on X:

By the way, who bought the life-saving saline fluid? Who employed and meets the salaries of the hard-working staff? The vehicle which ferried them to the affected areas?
We thank the medical staff for creative field remedial intervention. Residents of never-never ivory towers stupidly would rather you had lost precious time ferrying distressed patients to a building called a clinic or hospital instead of this life-saving, prompt intervention.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Health and Child Care Permanent Secretary Aspect Maunganidze revealed over the weekend that Cholera has now spread to 58 districts countrywide, with more than 16 000 suspected cases recorded countrywide as of last week.

Cholera has now spread to 58 districts countrywide, with more than 16 000 suspected cases recorded countrywide as of last week.
This was said by Ministry of Health and Child Care Permanent Secretary Aspect Maunganidze.
The spread of cholera to 58 of the country’s districts and a surge in new infections have been attributed to the increased movement of people during the festive season. Said Maunganidze (via <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/cholera-spreads-to-58-districts">The Sunday Mail</a>):

Cholera has spread to 58 districts across the country following a surge in cases over the festive season as people were moving to and from the affected areas as well as the flooding caused by the increased rainfall.
The Ministry of Health and Child Care continues to set up cholera treatment centres in areas where cases are being reported and setting up oral rehydration centres in the community.
We have been raising awareness on cholera prevention and control measures such as washing hands at all times before handling food and after using toilets.

Following the opening of schools for the first term on 09 January, Maunganidze urged school authorities to observe preventive protocols to ensure the safety of children. He said:

We are also encouraging people not to use unsafe water from flooded and shallow wells and also to boil all the water they use for domestic purposes including for drinking.
Good hygiene practices in schools are being emphasised with our health care workers working with school headmasters in this regard to avoid the spread of cholera within schools.
Water and soap should be made available in all schools for hand washing. Vending at school entrances should be avoided.

Cholera Spreads To 58 Out 64 Districts In Zimbabwe

A disturbing picture went viral on social media platforms this Sunday showing cholera patients in Chiredzi, one of the most underdeveloped districts in Zimbabwe, being treated under a tree with drips or intravenous (IV) infusion dispensers hanging from tree branches.
The “open field hospital” is said to be at Mapanza, near Mukwasine Estates. 
Most of the people who commented on the photo queried why a country such as Zimbabwe, endowed with abundant resources, cannot treat patients with dignity.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s spokesperson George Charamba, posting on one of his X accounts dhonzamusoro077, seemed to make fun of critics, bragging that the Government at least provided the medicines for the patients and also pays the health workers’ salaries. He wrote:

In another post, Charamba hit out at the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) which dominates the majority of urban councils in the country, saying the party takes money from residents but cannot provide the barest of services such as collecting garbage.
Charamba blamed the colonial government, which was replaced by the ZANU PF government nearly 44 years ago, for Chiredzi’s underdevelopment. He wrote:

Both men and women have been urged to get screened regularly to survive breast cancer which is a significant health issue in Zimbabwe, affecting both women and men. According to the 2018 National Cancer Registry annual report, there were 7,841 reported cases of cancer in the country, with breast cancer being the third most common type. However, there is a lack of awareness about breast cancer and its causes among the population.
Early diagnosis is crucial for improving the chances of survival, said <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/normalise-getting-screened-for-breast-cancer/">Zimpapers’ Rumbidzai Zinyuke</a>. Unfortunately, in Zimbabwe, most cases of breast cancer are diagnosed at advanced stages. This is often due to a lack of knowledge and limited access to information about the disease. Many women do not have access to informational adverts or awareness campaigns that could educate them about the importance of early detection.
Women above the age of 40 are at a higher risk of developing breast cancer, but it can also affect younger women and men. Women with a family history of breast cancer need to be aware of their risk and get screened regularly. Making lifestyle changes can also help reduce the risk, such as reducing alcohol intake and maintaining a healthy weight.
Symptoms of breast cancer include lumps or thickening in the breast, changes in breast size or appearance, dimpling or redness, nipple changes, and abnormal nipple discharge. Women must seek medical attention if they notice any of these symptoms.
Treatment options for breast cancer include surgery and radiation therapy. Early detection and timely treatment can significantly improve the chances of survival.
Public health education and awareness campaigns are essential to increase knowledge about breast cancer and encourage women to seek medical help at the earliest signs of the disease. Regular mammograms are recommended for women over the age of 40.

Two people in Glendale, Mashonaland Central province, have died from cholera, and 14 cases have been reported so far in the area. The mining town has been declared as a hot spot for the disease, <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/cholera-kills-2-in-glendaletown-declared-hotspot/">The Herald</a> reported. The Minister of State for Provincial Affairs retired Captain Christopher Magomo, has confirmed the cholera deaths and activated Civil Protection Committees. Magomo said:

14 cases and two deaths have been recorded so far, most cases are coming from Rujeko, Highway, Westview and Nhano area and so far the assessments done show that the whole Glendale area has been contaminated.
We have established a major camp at Tsungubvi Polyclinic and so far three rooms are being used as cholera camps however we are in the process of securing more tents for accommodation of more patients as well as cholera beds.

A ban on gatherings has been issued for Glendale and the Mazowe District to prevent the spread of the disease. The District Medical Officer, Dr K Chisenwa, has communicated this ban to the police. Chisenwa said:

There is a cholera outbreak in Glendale and the epicentre of the out-outbreak being Tsungubvi township and its locations. Thus gatherings and festivities would exacerbate the spread of the conditions. Until the outbreak has been contained, a communique to lift the ban by the Ministry of Health would be provided.

Glendale Declared Cholera Hotspot Following 2 Deaths And 14 Cases

The Ministry of Health and Child Care, with support from the World Health Organisation, its partners and the UK’s Fleming Fund, has introduced an antimicrobial resistance (AMR) module in the nursing school curriculum for registered general nurses, primary care nurses, and midwifery, beginning in 2024, reported <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/new-module-added-to-nursing-curriculum/">The Herald</a>.
As of November 2023, seven experts had trained a total of 106 registered nurses, primary care nurses, and midwifery educators from the country’s northern and southern regions on topics such as AMR in HIV, AMR in malaria, AMR in fungal, AMR in bacteria, sample collection, the role of nurses in the fight against AMR, the structure of bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, and antimicrobial stewardship.
The acting WHO representative in Zimbabwe, Professor Jean-Marie Dangou, said WHO supported the training of 106 nursing educators on effectively delivering the new AMR module. He said:

Recognising the crucial role of nurses in the fight against AMR, WHO actively supported this integration by training 106 nursing educators on effectively delivering the new AMR module. The WHO also helped to mobilise resources for Zimbabwe’s AMR program. The UK government provided financial assistance to the Republic of Zimbabwe through the Fleming Fund and the AMR Multi Partners Trust Fund.

Resistant infections can be difficult, and sometimes impossible, to treat.
Antimicrobial resistance is a naturally occurring process, but AMR increases in antimicrobial resistance are driven by a combination of germs exposed to antibiotics and antifungals, and the spread of those germs and their resistance mechanisms.
AMR does not mean that the body is resistant to antibiotics or antifungals. It means the bacteria or fungi causing the infection are resistant to the antibiotic or antifungal treatment.

Zimbabwe Adds Antimicrobial Resistance Module To Nursing Curriculum

An official in the Ministry of Health and Child Care has said HIV-negative people can now take ARVs as an HIV prevention measure.
The Director HIV and TB in the Ministry of Health and Child Care, Dr Owen Mugurungi, told <a href="https://newziana.co.zw/2023/12/20/arvs-for-hiv-negative-people/">New Ziana</a> that 95 per cent of all sexually active Zimbabweans know their HIV status. He said:

So, we are saying when one thinks of prevention measures, he or she must choose from our variety of services, including condoms and Pre- pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) or Post post-exposure prophylaxis as well as ARVs.
Now even an HIV negative person can take ARVs as an HIV prevention measure.
We notice that many couples manage to go for ante-natal care during pregnancy and have known their results.
However, we have also noticed that during the first 42 days after giving birth men are then going outside and do whatever they do there, but in the end bring the disease back home.
They infect their wives and children thereafter, who will be breastfed.
So we are now saying mothers can take PrEP or ARVs during that period when they feel at risk. The same applies to everyone sexually active.

The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has established the 95-95-95 targets, whereby 95% of PL-HIV should be diagnosed, 95% of those diagnosed with HIV should be receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART), and 95% of all those receiving ART should achieve viral suppression (VLS).
Mugurungi also said Zimbabwe has enough ARVs to take it through to the next three years, adding that the Global Fund, which is the major source of HIV health funding to Zimbabwe will take the country through.
The Ministry of Health and Child Care has scrapped all user fees for accessing HIV and TB prevention and treatment services at all public health centres.

HIV Negative People Can Take ARVs - Ministry Of Health Official

Human rights lawyers are calling for the government and local authorities to be held responsible for the deaths caused by the spreading cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe. The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) have accused the authorities of neglecting their responsibilities in handling the outbreak. This is the third cholera outbreak in the country this year, with cases reported in all ten provinces. Since February 2023, there have been 200 cholera-related deaths and 130 hospitalizations.
The ZLHR stated that the ongoing cholera outbreak is a clear indication of the devastating consequences of failing to provide basic necessities to the people, and the government must act quickly to protect lives. The lawyers said:

According to Ministry of Health and Child Care, more than 200 people are suspected to have fallen victim to the cholera outbreak in several parts of the country, while more than 130 people have been hospitalised since February 2023, when the first cases were publicly confirmed.
ZLHR is saddened that the ongoing deaths owing to cholera, which is a medieval disease, are a result of dereliction of duty by public officials and have brought desolation to the affected families and communities and the nation at large. It is extremely worrying that such a medieval and preventable disease continues to daim precious lives in Zimbabwe, 15 years after the country was afflicted by a deadly cholera outbreak, which was eradicated centuries ago in some countries. It is an indictment on both local and central government that Zimbabwe is still stalked by a medieval disease such as cholera. ZLHR holds both local and central government accountable for the recurrent cholera outbreaks and the unwarranted deaths of people because of their failure to invest in and manage basic water, sanitation infrastructure and public health facilities. The failure by central and local government to swiftly respond to the cholera epidemic through providing basic health services, medical treatment and services, clean running water and sanitary facilities to people, is an unacceptable failure of leadership and represents a clear failure by local authorities and government to uphold their constitutional obligations as provided in the Constitution and other regional and international instruments.
To arrest the cholera epidemic and prevent recurrent outbreaks of the primitive disease, ZLHR implores local and central government to;
Urgently take corrective measures to prevent further deaths from cholera, contain the epidemic, and prevent further outbreaks;
Provide clean running water and sanitary environs to all affected communities and others at risk of infection to halt the spread of the deadly disease;
Urgently provide all affected people with rapid free medical assistance and treatment;
Increase budget allocation on water, sanitation and hygiene to achieve 15% allocation to health as provided in the Abuja Declaration to enhance the quality of life of citizens;
Seriously embrace their social and economic rights obligations provided in the Constitution and guarantee progressive realisation of the right to healthcare, the right to safe, clean and potable water for everyone and the right to a clean environment that is not harmful to people’s health or their well-being.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has intervened by setting up cholera treatment centres throughout the country. The WHO aims to improve access to critical care and prevent further deaths and the spread of the disease in vulnerable communities. The WHO representative to Zimbabwe, Jean-Marie Dangou, emphasized the importance of upgrading treatment centres to provide timely and effective care for cholera patients in rural areas. Jean-Marie Dangou added:

By expanding treatment capacity, improving hygiene and equipping healthcare workers, we can save lives and contain the outbreak.

To prevent the spread of cholera, the government of Zimbabwe has imposed a ban on gatherings in areas where the disease is common. The Health and Child Care Minister, Douglas Mombeshora, emphasized the importance of involving the community to effectively combat the outbreak. He said the government received equipment from the World Health Organization (WHO) and plans to distribute it to the areas most in need.
Cholera is a disease that spreads through contaminated water and food, causing severe diarrhoea and vomiting. Unfortunately, it has become prevalent in Zimbabwe. The ban on gatherings is one measure to control the disease, but the lack of access to safe drinking water remains a concern. In certain parts of the capital city, Harare, borehole water has been deemed unsafe for drinking.

Rights Lawyers Say Government And Local Authorities Responsible For Cholera Deaths

A state-of-the-art incinerator funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is currently under construction at Mpilo Central Hospital and is scheduled for completion in early 2024.
An incinerator is a facility designed to burn waste materials at very high temperatures until they are reduced to ash, gases, and heat.
<a href="https://cite.org.zw/mpilos-cutting-edge-incinerator-nears-completion/">CITE</a> reported Mpilo Chief Medical Officer, Dr Narcissus Dzvanga, as saying that the incinerator would not only benefit the hospital but also assist the Bulawayo City Council (BCC) in waste management. Said Dzvanga:

The incinerator is under construction, it’s going to be a game changer in waste management in the Southern region. It’s not meant to save the hospital but the city.
As you saw for yourself it’s a huge building and it’s going to come with two trucks for collecting liquid waste and other forms of waste.
I am sure we will be able to assist Bulawayo City Council (BCC) with waste management as well.
Everything is ready, they have started the recruitment of relevant staff, incinerator operator, electrical engineer, and mechanical engineer.
Once we have the full complement of the staff that is required then they are ready to bring the meta.
What they don’t want is to deliver then the thing is lying idle because we don’t have an incinerator operator, the engineer.
So they are saying once we have manpower ready, they deliver, they train and we are done.
For some of the ranks they are basics, drivers, general hands, we can recruit within.

Overreliance on donor funds to construct critical public health infrastructure could be an indication of misplaced priorities by the Zimbabwean Government.
In the 2024 ZWL$58.2 trillion budget, Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion Minister Mthuli Ncube allotted ZWL$6.3 trillion to the Ministry of Health and Child Care.
This represents a meagre 9.2 per cent, which is about 6 per cent shy of the Abuja Declaration agreed 15 per cent which Zimbabwe ratified.
Meanwhile, incineration can be controversial due to concerns about air pollution, potential health risks, and the impact on the environment.
However, modern incinerators are often equipped with air pollution control technologies to minimize emissions of pollutants such as particulate matter, heavy metals, and dioxins.
Furthermore, when properly designed, operated, and regulated, incinerators can provide a way to manage certain types of waste and reduce the volume of material going to landfills.
They can also be useful in recovering energy in the form of heat or electricity through waste-to-energy technologies.

Mpilo Central Hospital's Incinerator Nears Completion

Zimbabwean medical doctor, Allan Ngulube has won the Severance Hospital’s Avison Award, an award given to foreign doctors trained by a South Korean private university.
According to the <a href="https://www.koreabiomed.com/news/articleView.html?idxno=22739">Korea Biomedical Review</a>, every year, Severance Hospital honours the service spirit of its founder, Dr. Oliver R. Avison, by selecting one foreign medical doctor who was trained at Yonsei University Health System (YUHS) and showed a life of service.
Ngulube, a Zimbabwean surgeon, received the 2023 Avison Global Leadership Award. Ngulube trained in endoscopic surgery and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) at Severance Hospital for three months in 2018.
He then returned to Zimbabwe and began working at Mpilo Central Hospital. However, the hospital did not have any endoscopic equipment.
In 2019, an endoscope was donated from abroad, but it had only a light source and no endoscope tube.
Ngulube didn’t give up. In 2021, he applied for and received $5 000 from Severance Hospital’s Avison global health project grant.
Ngulube purchased a used endoscope, repaired it to connect to the light source donated two years earlier, and began using it.
In 2022, he performed 161 endoscopic procedures and surgeries. Ngulube was recognized for not giving up in the face of difficult circumstances and for faithfully caring for the people in his community. Said Ngulube:

While this award is for me as an individual, I believe it is a recognition of all the Mpilo Central Hospital staff who serve patients under difficult conditions and circumstances.

Zimbabwean Surgeon Recognised By A Top South Korean Hospital

The Minister of Health and Child Care, Hon. Dr. Douglas Mombeshora, yesterday provided an update on the cholera outbreak to the Cabinet. He said as of 30 November 2023, Zimbabwe had recorded a total of 9,895 suspected cholera cases, with 9,466 recoveries and 53 confirmed deaths.
Mombeshora stated that during the period from 24 to 30 November, the highest number of cases, 607, was reported in Harare Metropolitan Province. However, this represents a decrease of 98 cases compared to the previous week. Similar slight decreases were observed in Mutare Rural and Buhera Districts in Manicaland Province.
The case fatality rate has decreased to 2.2%. The Minister attributed the decrease in cases and the case fatality rate to targeted interventions in the three main affected areas.
He said efforts are being made to bring healthcare services closer to communities by setting up Oral Rehydration Points manned by community health promoters. Training programs on case management and rapid response are also ongoing.
Mombeshora added that health education campaigns on cholera prevention and control, including hygiene promotion, are being conducted in all provinces of the country. In addition to the ongoing measures, the Cabinet has highlighted the following additional actions:

1. Increasing health education on cholera and other diarrheal diseases in schools.
2. Improving water, sanitation, and hygiene conditions in communities.
3. Continuing to intensify risk communication and community engagement, with the involvement of religious and local leaders in the fight against cholera.

Meanwhile, the City of Harare Communications Division has been actively raising awareness about cholera in different areas, including Mbare. The local government authority says residents have shown their willingness to support the city’s efforts in fighting cholera. The city health department has also informed residents that cholera treatment is provided free of charge at all council clinics.
The local government authority also received a donation of sanitisers from Cairde Hygenics to be used in the fight against cholera.

Health Minister Gives An Update On Cholera Outbreak

Zimbabwe’s Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Ziyambi Ziyambi, has claimed that the current shortage of essential medicines in major hospitals is a result of economic sanctions imposed on the country by the United States, Britain, and their Western allies.
Ziyambi who is also Zimbabwe’s Leader of Government Business in Parliament, made these remarks during a Question and Answer Session in the National Assembly. He acknowledged that the health sector in Zimbabwe is facing challenges, and he attributed the drug shortages to the country’s economic struggles, which have been worsened by the economic sanctions. He said:

We used to have functional pharmaceutical companies that supplied us with medication but we were then slapped with sanctions.
However, with the advent of the second republic, President Mnangagwa got into an agreement with Egypt so that they provide us with medicine.
The Egyptian (government) has built warehouses so that they can store the medicine once they start supplying. In the meantime, we are getting our medicine from Egypt.

Opposition legislators from the Citizens Coalition for Change demanded that the government visit the country’s hospitals to assess the situation firsthand.
The Health and Child Care Minister, Douglas Mombeshora, also acknowledged the serious shortage of medicine and drugs in public hospitals, leaving patients dependent on private health facilities. He described the unavailability of medicine as depressing. <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200020469/sanctions-to-blame-for-drug-shortages">NewsDay</a> cites him as saying:

The healthcare system in Zimbabwe was once considered one of the best in the developing world, according to the World Health Organization in 1985. However, the situation has deteriorated, with some hospitals operating without even basic painkillers. Critics attribute the current state of the healthcare sector to underfunding and corruption.

Minister Attributes Shortage Of Essential Medicines In Zimbabwe To Economic Sanctions

Tawanda Macheke, a professional Zimbabwean football player, is seeking help to send his four-month-old son to India for an urgent heart operation. The operation is estimated to cost around US$20,000, and Macheke has managed to raise about US$4,000 so far. He told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/footballer-seeks-assistance-for-sons-op/">The Herald</a> that is reaching out for assistance as time is running out. He said:

My four-month-old son was diagnosed with a heart problem which needs urgent attention, in the next two months, in India.
We need almost US$20,000 for his treatment and other logistics to travel for the operation… We only got to know about this last month and I have been running around to try and raise the required money.
