The City of Bulawayo has condemned 1.5 tonnes of elephant meat after inspectors declared it spoiled and unfit for human consumption.

The meat was found at Hillside Junior School during routine inspections carried out by council health officials.

According to the latest council report, 1,500 kilograms of elephant meat were condemned after inspectors found it rotten and “aesthetically unsuitable” for human consumption.

The meat was among various food products confiscated and destroyed during city-wide inspections.

Other condemned items included expired beverages, dented tinned foods, improperly stored dairy products and unwholesome meat found at several businesses.

Council health inspectors carried out more than 1,700 inspections during the month and issued dozens of notices to businesses breaching public health regulations.

Officials, however, have not yet disclosed how the elephant meat came to be stored at the school.
