<p>United States-based Zimbabwean software engineer Freeman Chari says their work during the August 2023 general elections shows that volunteers and the use of technology have power even under “challenging autocratic systems.”</p>
<p>Posting on X, Chari said his team of volunteers, CredibleVote, was able to deploy Meshtastic repeaters across the country to cover areas without a network which enabled them to receive and validate results from 10500 polling stations in the first 48 hours after the elections. Wrote Chari:</p>

<p>The highlight of the past election was how technology disrupted ZANU PF’s rigging strategy. They used ZANU PF’s member register to move those who were not their members from their traditional polling stations in cities. They gerrymandered the electoral maps and then created double candidates.</p>
<p>In every step, [Team Pachedu] followed them and highlighted these discrepancies and pointed out areas of focus.</p>
<p>[ZEC] refused with the voters’ roll. People didn’t know where to vote and the double candidates made it so they don’t know who to vote for.</p>
<p>A week before elections we released CredibleVote Bots on Whatsapp and Android which completely disrupted the ZEC-ZANU plan.</p>
<p>487 000 people checked where and who to vote for in 5 days and 84% of these were in Hre, 10% in Byo. By our calculation, CCC would have potentially lost 32 seats without this.</p>
<p>On election day, CredibleVote had 2 war rooms. One in Mashonaland &amp; the other in Matabeleland far away cities powered by satellite internet.</p>
<p>We deployed Meshtastic repeaters across the country to cover areas without a network. The maximum range we got was 53km but repeaters made it so we could get results from 150km away. We also had MQTT servers that relayed this info to our result servers.</p>
<p>All this work was done by volunteers outside of CCC. The only thing we asked of CCC was that they should have polling agents at every polling station.</p>
<p>Then the issue of resources came up. We again built the #Mazizi platform to crowdsource from supporters &amp; which raised $105K which was minuscule compared to the need.</p>
<p>This setup was novel and it was a culmination of 2yrs of planning, coding &amp; deployment by people who didn’t have a stake in CCC. I believe ZANU PF &amp; the State machinery never knew about our work.</p>
<p>They raided ZESN probably after the noise by [Team Pachedu] about Mandla. That did not affect the Crediblevote work at all.</p>
<p>Results were coming in from our network, from CCC agents and we also opened a crowd platform for anyone to send V11. In the backend, we were using computer vision &amp; language models to read V11s and sort them. There were 3 tiers of validation. Our roving agents had the highest trust, then CCC agents, then the crowd.</p>
<p>In the first 48 hours after the elections, we received and validated results from 10500 polling stations. We got a further 1600 from CCC as some agents chose to hand deliver their V11 etc…</p>
<p>I had a meeting with Nelson Chamisa &amp; presented him with what we had. We had close to 350 V11s from Mash East and West which had no stamps and the agents were saying ZEC had said they didn’t have stamps but ZANU PF agents were bringing stamped V11 pointing to conniving with ZEC.</p>
<p>NC said we should wait for ZEC to release their results. Unlike in 2018, ZEC chose to not release their results from each polling station.</p>
<p>They used brute force to ram unsubstantiated numbers to people. The responsibility of a credible election lies on the electoral board and nobody else.</p>
<p>We had a debate as to whether we should just release all the ~12100 results we had or not. The SADC report came out and it became clear that the most logical thing to do was reject the whole process &amp; all results given the irregularities that SADC also acknowledged. I was shocked &amp; distraught when folks chose to go to parliament.</p>
<p>In the end, I think the gun prevailed as it always temporarily does. What we showed is that no process run by the military can ever wield a product that represents the will of the people.</p>
<p>I have written this to highlight the power of volunteers, technology and commitment in challenging autocratic systems. I hope in the future others will build on top of our work. I wish I could thank all the volunteers by name but you know yourselves.</p>

Volunteers, Technology Are Powerful Even Under Autocratic Systems; Freeman Chari Reflects On 2023 Elections

<p>Opposition activist,  <a href="https://wiki.pindula.co.zw/Freeman_Chari"><strong>Freeman Chari</strong></a> who is also a software engineer based in the United States of America, has been criticised by some CCC sympathisers for suggesting that the party’s “strategic ambiguity” or failure to have structures (party positions occupied by members elected at a congress), a constitution, and an ideology, has been its weakness.</p>
<p>In a recent thread on the social media site X (formerly Twitter), Chari said strategic ambiguity has destroyed accountability in CCC as well as the abdication of responsibilities. He said:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>Initially we thought people were carrying over their responsibilities from MDC-A but slowly the idea of a formless entity was pushed. This had 2 issues. There were no responsibilities and there was no accountability. Everything became centralized and inefficient.</p>
<p>The impact of this was there for all to see. Nobody could move unless directed by the only person who seemed to have a position – Nelson [Chamisa]. Those who had critical responsibilities started abdicating and those gaps could be seen. Within CCC people spoke about this in hushed tones.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>Responding to Chari’s no-holds-barred criticism of CCC and its leader Nelson Chamisa, UK-based lawyer and political commentator Brighton Mutebuka said it was a strategic miscalculation for Chari to reveal CCC’s inner workings on a public platform. He said:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>The more the strategic position one occupies or the role one plays, the greater the responsibility towards showing discretion when communicating sensitive information relating to the organisation.</p>
<p>The crucial roles that you have played demand the highest levels of emotional regulation &amp; social responsibility.</p>
<p>The regime &amp; its acolytes will naturally celebrate &amp; harvest as much as possible from the strategic information that has been freely &amp; unexpectedly disclosed on a public forum.</p>
<p>It’s an unfortunate development for one who has invested so much for the opposition cause – and, for that reason, is directly in the line of fire from the regime.</p>
<p>It’s tantamount to inadvertently campaigning for the regime and does not provide any constructive solutions for addressing the highlighted issues…</p>
<p>To then so publicly berate the leader of the very opposition you were pitching for &amp; disclosing sensitive information you were privy to in the process would have been a boon to the regime, while disappointing millions of opposition voters who had rallied behind your initiatives.</p>
<p>It’s yet another tragic example of the opposition movement scoring own goals and showing an unfortunate tendency to self-destruct at crucial points in the journey towards seeking democratic change.</p>

<p>Tich Gwanzura wrote: “<em>(It also has the effect of transmitting the message that the purveyor of that information has given up &amp; has no regard about the consequences of their disclosure.) Same same as saying I am giving up.</em>“</p>
<p>Charles Magagada said: “<em>I can pick all your points but 9 strikes most. Zanu elements discuss sensitive information internally yet the opposition activists can shoot anyhow and claim it’s democracy? Some even have the privilege to directly conduct the responsible authorities but choose otherwise.</em>“</p>
<p>After President spokesperson George Charamba said Chari’s X thread is “a must read” for people who want to understand the “confusion in factions around Chamisa and CCC”, Solomon Haruzibwi said: “<em>Probably the reason why I would never tweet anything that gives Charamba an orgasm no matter how frustrated I get.</em>“</p>

Freeman Chari Faces Backlash For Saying CCC's "Strategic Ambiguity" Has Failed

<p>United States-based Zimbabwean software engineer <a href="https://wiki.pindula.co.zw/Freeman_Chari"><strong>Freeman Chari</strong></a> has warned CCC leader Nelson Chamisa that he risks finding himself in the political dustbin if he continues to centralise and personalise the party while excluding other people.</p>
<p>In an <a href="https://x.com/freemanchari/status/1713283634864546006?s=20"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">X thread</span></a>, Chari also warned Chamisa that Zimbabweans are tired of Bible verses which he posts on social media regularly, and that he should ensure that supporters can contribute and participate in the party’s activities and in crafting its vision. Wrote Chari:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>1. Here is what is happening. Prior to the elections, there were 3 groups of people. – Those who supported Chamisa &amp; CCC – Those who supported CCC in spite of Chamisa – Those who supported Chamisa in spite of CCC. CCC in this case is the grp of people who loosely are remnants of MDC.</p>
<p>2. There is also another nomenclature. – Those whose political fortunes flourished by association with NC – Those whose political fortunes dimmed by being sidelined from NC.</p>
<p>3. The only thing common in these classifications was the general agreement that ZANU PF has to go. The formation of CCC was abrupt &amp; haphazard. There was no consensus on what this animal was, how it was going to operate and who will operate it. Disdain of ZANU kept people together.</p>

<p>6. This is important in the context of the 2nd nomenclature. The biggest calculation by most of the “leaders” in CCC was that, opposing NC publicly was a bigger risk to their own parliamentary ambitions. So people went on &amp; even supported bad decisions for their own interests.</p>
<p>7. It became a festival of bootlicking. Now, there is also a group of people to which I belong who felt that NC was the best foot forward and should be given the leeway to test his ideas so that if he wins he wins by them, or if he fails he fails on his own inadequacies.</p>
<p>8. The assumption was that only rational ideas were going to be pursued. The doctrine of strategic ambiguity became his primary weapon. Even those of us who supported him sometimes had no idea what he wanted, expected or intended to do. It became hard to be proactive.</p>
<p>9. There were others who chose to disengage completely because they felt NC was taking the movement in the wrong direction. Most of the people I have worked with previously in MDC and other social organizations were in this category.</p>
<p>10. As we got closer to elections, it became clear that the process of choosing candidates was not going to be a traditional vote by members (Since CCC doesn’t have any) The process itself was shady &amp; shoddy but for the purposes of the greater goal we swept stuff under the carpet.</p>
<p>11. The process produced candidates some of whom were there on the basis of bootlicking or gatekeeping or blatant backstabbing. We went into a flawed election and supported them. The problem is that for most of them being an MP or councillor was an ultimate end goal.</p>
<p>12. If you want to know some of them, they took ma $40K in the last parliament and justified it in spite of our general disdain for fiscal maleficence. You will also find that they are the same people who pushed for participating even with a flawed delimitation, no VR &amp; no reforms.</p>
<p>13. When it became clear that the election was going to be unfair, the same group would not contemplate pulling out. Even as I &amp; others advised NC that he needed to declare the whole electoral process a sham, “The Parliament By All Means” group pushed back.</p>
<p>14. So we ended up with an incoherent response to the sham elections where we accepted MP results and then claimed: “The election was rigged”. The “Defend our space” crowd weakened our position &amp; made it hard to even justify. My opinion remains we should have rejected everything!</p>
<p>15. The unfortunate part is that NC’s position was weakened by the fact that some MPs claimed they had used their own resources to campaign and therefore needed to recoup their investments somehow from parliament etc.</p>
<p>16. We are now in a position where our people don’t know what to expect. They have no idea what should happen next. This is complicated by the fact that people who traditionally filled in certain positions have new responsibilities and nobody is there to keep CCC intact.</p>
<p>17. Anyway, remember the group that supported CCC in spite of NC most of them fell by the wayside in the struggle for parliament. The unfortunate part is that this group has most of the people who have institutional memory, understand statecraft &amp; experience in building organisations.</p>
<p>18. They have disengaged and at the same time, the grp that used to fill in the gaps and plug holes are either Mayors, MPs or Councillors. They have new responsibilities, now the party’s buttocks are in the open and no one seems available to cover them.</p>
<p>19. This has provided an opportunity for those who opposed NC to go for the jugular. The biggest challenge for NC is that he is exposed and has no shock absorbers around him to defend &amp; articulate his vision &amp; strategy. Every arrow aimed at him seems to be hitting him.</p>
<p>20. On the other hand, the people going after him have nothing new to offer. They are not going to win because they are not capable of doing anything differently from NC. Actually, anything they may have as leverage NC probably has 10x that.</p>
<p>21. To be an alternative to Chamisa you should be willing to explore the realms that NC has not explored in the past – Mass Protests – Violence – War etc None of those wanting to dislodge him have the willingness or inclination for these.</p>
<p>22. NC has one card that most of these people do not have – mass appeal. Unfortunately, things can turn &amp; he can become a comma in history. Remember Zexie Manatsa used to fill Rufaro Stadium but like dew, he evaporated. The 2016 rise of Mawarire is a lesson, he could have taken chunhu.</p>
<p>23. The task at hand is to build CCC &amp; restore faith is huge. What I don’t know is whether NC has the capacity to handle it. It requires him to do things differently from his form. He will need to rely on other people, he will also need to accept that his ideas were tested &amp; came short.</p>
<p>24. Finally, people are tired of verses. They need direction. They need to know if the struggle is OK. They need assurances that investing their resources, time and emotions in this thing is worth it. Provide a conduit for them to be members so they can contribute &amp; participate!</p>

Freeman Chari Warns Chamisa Zimbabweans Are Tired Of His Bible Quotes

<p>The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has stated that polling station return forms (V.11) were displayed outside all polling stations and shared with political parties’ agents and observers. This is a response to calls for ZEC to provide evidence supporting President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s victory in the August 23-24, 2023 presidential election.</p>
<p>The opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has expressed concerns about the integrity of the recent elections, alleging collusion between ZEC and ZANU PF to manipulate results in favour of the ruling party. As a result, the CCC is calling for fresh elections supervised by an impartial body instead of the perceived biased ZEC.</p>
<p>In response to the CCC and other stakeholders who are challenging the commission to provide evidence that the results were not altered, ZEC yesterday stated that it is not legally obligated to publish the V.11 forms. In its latest statement, ZEC said:</p>

<p><em>DID YOU KNOW?</em></p>
<p><em>V11s were displayed outside all polling stations for the public to see and copies were also shared with all political parties agents and observers.</em></p>
<p><em>V23s were given to all agents and observers and also publicly displayed.</em></p>

<p>According to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC), President Mnangagwa received 2,350,711 votes (52.6%), while Nelson Chamisa received 1,967,343 votes (44%). This means Chamisa lost by a margin of 383,368 votes. However, Freeman Chari claims they loaded 11,872 V11 forms, and their calculations indicate that Chamisa received more votes than the number reported by ZEC. He argues that the V11 forms will prove that ZEC altered the results.</p>

ZEC Says It Displayed V.11 Forms At Polling Stations And Shared With Political Parties' Agents

<p>The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has said it is not compelled by the law to publish the polling station return form (V.11). This is happening when the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has raised concerns about the integrity of the 23 – 24 August 2023 polls, which <strong><a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/08/26/emmerson-mnangagwa-declared-winner-of-zimbabwes-2023-presidential-election/">declared President Emmerson Mnangagwa as the winner.</a></strong> The CCC has hinted at legal challenges and has called for SADC and AU intervention.</p>
<p>In a post on X, formerly Twitter, the commission said:</p>

<p>Yesterday, Freeman Chari requested that the ZEC share its polling station results and V11 forms for comparison with their own data entered on his application. Chari stated that they have reached a milestone of loading 11,872 V11s, and according to their calculations, Chamisa had surpassed the number provided by ZEC (1,967,343). He said there were still 502 pending in the designated pink wards (see picture below). Chari said:</p>

<p><em>MILESTONE ALERT: We have loaded 11 872 V11s. By our count Chamisa has crossed the number he was given by @ZECzim</em><br/>
<em>(<strong>1967343</strong>). We still have 502 outstanding in those pink wards. We now ask ZEC to provide its polling station results &amp; v11 and we compare with ours.</em></p>

<p>According to ZEC, Mnangagwa secured <strong>2,350,711</strong> votes which translates to 52.6%, while Nelson Chamisa received <strong>1,967,343</strong>  which translates to 44% of the total votes cast. This means Chamisa lost by <strong>383,368</strong> votes.</p>
<p>In response to ZEC’s statement that it is not obligated to release V11 forms, Pastor Evan Mawarire, known for the #ThisFlag campaign, urged the commission to publish the forms if they had nothing to hide. He emphasized that by withholding the V11s and presenting an ineffective map instead, ZEC undermines its credibility. Mawarire said:</p>
<blockquote>
<p><em>If you have nothing to hide publish the V11’s. You stand to lose nothing and infact gain credibility as you have been accused by all the observers of failing the credibility test. It is your refusal to publish the v11’s, instead show a useless map that provides absolutely no useful data that exposes the fraud you are. The election is not a coloring exercise, it’s a counting exercise. It’s unbelievable that you actually want to be taken seriously.</em></p>
</blockquote>
<p>ZEC states it fulfilled its duty by publishing V11s and providing copies to political parties’ agents and observers, as required by the Electoral Act. However, Team Pachedu alleges that some V11s were blank in Rushinga, Hurungwe, Dotito, etc. They also claim that updated V11s were not published by ZEC. Team Pachedu requests ZEC to disclose the V11s used to declare the winner.</p>
<p>Zimbabwe conducted harmonized elections on August 23, 20923, but voting delays in Bulawayo and Harare led to an extension until August 24. These cities are considered opposition strongholds. Election observers noted that despite the generally peaceful environment, there were numerous irregularities that affected the integrity of the polls. These included flaws in the delimitation process, late release of the Voters Roll, restrictive fees, disruption of opposition rallies, unconstitutional laws, disqualification of candidates, gender parity issues, concerns about judiciary independence, voter intimidation, controversial postal voting, and bias of state-owned media against opposition parties.</p>

ZEC: We're Not Compelled By Law To Publish Polling Station Return Form (V.11)

<p>Freeman Chari, a Zimbabwean software engineer based in the United States of America, says CCC should join MDC-T Douglas Mwonzora’s urgent chamber application at the High Court seeking the nullification of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) delimitation report.</p>
<p>Chari, who is sympathetic to the Nelson Chamisa-led party, believes that while it appears to be politically incorrect, CCC should join Mwonzora’s court application, saying it captures all the issues that he has raised over the past 12 months that need to be attended to, to ensure a credible election. <a href="https://twitter.com/freemanchari/status/1635876468138950656">Chari wrote on Twitter</a>:</p>
<blockquote>
<p><em>1. Personally, l don’t have anything against the court challenge. It captures all the things l spoke about from March 2022. The reason l spoke so passionately abt all these things was that we could tell the complications of the future. It took people 11 months to pay attention.</em></p>
<p><em>2. Everyone within CCC that l spoke to except a few trivialized the impact of the wrong delimitation formula. Some still do up to today because they believe we can win the presidency even under the circumstances. Which makes me question a lot of things.</em></p>
<p><em>3. What frustrates me more is that CCC is being nudged into decisions by agendas set by the system. It feels like a flow chart. Those who were there in 2013 should be feeling a sense of de javu.</em></p>
<p><em>4. Because the case has been brought by Doug, it is now feeling like a poisoned chalice. Regardless of the merits, the politics is dictating that CCC can’t be part of it. I want to argue that, CCC should do the unpredictable and join it…</em></p>
<p><em>5. Remember how in 1998 everyone was pro-land reform except ZANU? For those who don’t remember, listen to Mapfumo’s Set the people free or Chimbetu’s Zuva Raenda. Mugabe, unpredictably metamorphosed into a champion of land reform overnight to grab the impetus…</em></p>
<p><em>6. The expectation is for CCC not to support this and plunge into an election that is heavily gerrymandered and unfair all because of hubris. I would urge CCC to prepare for elections intensively if they go ahead, enter under protest.</em></p>
<p><em>7. An election with a bad delimitation, without a voter roll, without polling station names, without free campaign etc is an illegitimate election that will produce an illegitimate result. So again, PREPARE for election, CHALLENGE the delimitation, participate under PROTEST.</em></p>

CCC Activist Urges Chamisa To Join Mwonzora's Delimitation Report Court Challenge

<p>United States-based Zimbabwean Biomedical Scientist and Software Engineer, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Freeman_Chari"><strong>Freeman Chari</strong></a>, says opposition political parties cannot overwhelm the vote-rigging system by massive turnout alone.</p>
<p>Posting on Twitter, the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) sympathiser argues that the opposition should ensure that the voters’ roll is cleaned to eliminate ghost voters whom he believes were half a million in 2013. <a href="https://twitter.com/freemanchari/status/1509014870775185410">Wrote Chari:</a></p>
<p>In the context of Zimbabwe, claiming that you can overwhelm the rigging system by massive turnout alone is a MYTH.</p>
<blockquote>
<p>On the contrary, the system has used this hope based approach to steal and deflate.</p>
<p>I will explain again. In 2013, Mugabe used a Voters Roll that we have analyzed and seen more than 500K+ ghost voters. These are people whose IDs or DOB changed over time.</p>

<p>Still, there were about 500k+ voters whose existence was questionable. We predicted that we needed 74+% for Nelson Chamisa to win.</p>
<p>Nelson managed to push turnout to 70%. The system padded the results with pretty much the same range of ghosts that we had flagged.</p>
<p>The system has the capacity to overwhelm the opposition because we generally don’t pay attention to the little details.</p>
<p>We went to an election without a Voters Roll. We have seen Polling Station codes change. How do you know which polling stations are legit?</p>
<p>With our archaic systems, how do you collate results from all the 10 800 polling stations and identify fake from genuine for all the elections?</p>
<p>For me, the most important thing in an election is a Voters Roll. Without that, we are wasting time. We are lying to people and giving them false hope.</p>

'Massive Voter Turnout Alone Cannot Overwhelm Vote-rigging System'

<p>United States-based Zimbabwean Biomedical Scientist and Software Engineer, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Freeman_Chari"><strong>Freeman Chari</strong></a>, has launched a <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/cz64a-support-team-pachedu"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>GoFundMe campaign for Team Pachedu</strong></span></a>, a group of Zimbabweans who are working on enhancing transparency and holding public officials in Zimbabwe accountable.</p>
<p>Recently, Team Pachedu discovered alleged discrepancies in the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) national voters’ roll.</p>
<p>It is alleged that ZEC moved 170 000 voters from their constituencies and wards and created additional polling stations under unclear circumstances.</p>
<p>Chari, a Team Pachedu alumni and a former member, said the group requires computers, servers and software. He said:</p>

Team Pachedu Appeals For Financial Donations

<p><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;">Freeman Chari, a Zimbabwean technology entrepreneur and a member of the opposition MDC based in the USA, has said coalitions with “glory hunters,” won’t succeed, remarks that are apparently in response to the debate in the opposition on whether to combine forces with former members of the ruling ZANU PF or not. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;">In recent weeks, the MDC Alliance has been at loggerheads with exiled former Information Minister, Professor Jonathan Moyo, who in 2018, together with other alleged members of the defunct G40 faction, helped mobilise votes for Nelson Chamisa. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;">The fallout seems to have originated from Moyo’s criticism of the MDC Alliance leadership’s strategies ahead of the 2023 elections</span></p>

No Coalition Will Succeed With Glory Hunters - Chari

<p>United States-based Zimbabwean Biomedical Scientist and Software Engineer, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Freeman_Chari"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Freeman Chari</strong></span></a>, has advised fresh university graduates to use their academic achievements to solve the world’s problems.</p>
<p>Thousands of Zimbabweans graduated from several local universities in the past few weeks, further swelling the job market with more job seekers.</p>

<p>Don’t be afraid to charge for work. If somebody asks you for help with something that requires your skill and time, don’t be afraid to ask for payment. Anything that someone is willing to pay for is a good candidate for a profession or a business.</p>
<p>Don’t wait to be a pro to charge. Start now! This will help you understand the terrain and quickly figure out your worth. The more you get experience, the more you can charge.</p>
<p>Don’t be afraid to try uncharted territories. You may have a degree in English but you can also be a salesperson or a communications expert. Find a territory where you can leverage your degree even if that is not primarily what u learnt.</p>
<p>Keep trying &amp; don’t be afraid to fail. Every job that I have held in the past 10yrs has been a result of the failed projects that I have ventured into. When Cargoove failed a competitor offered me a job at 3x which I made as a co-founder of my failed company.</p>
<p>Finally, the world is not perfect. When you find yourself in hard times don’t be afraid to downgrade. Sometimes we have to do unpleasant jobs just so we can survive and flourish again. Good luck!</p>

Campaign Launched To Raise Salaries For Political Detainees

<p>The MDC secretary for elections, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Jacob_Mafume" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Jacob Mafume</a>, has defended the party’s decision to embrace people implicated in the murder of the party’s activists in previous elections.</p>

<p>GoFundMe campaign has managed to raise US$59,297 since its launch last week to assist the victims of Tropical Cyclone Idai in Manicaland, Mashonaland East and Masvingo provinces.</p>

The money will be sent to Zimbabwe through either WorldRemit or Mukuru.com. We are in negotiations with Mukuru so that they may not charge us fees on humanitarian grounds. All the food &amp; supplies will be bought in Zimbabwe and then transported to Chimanimani and Chipinge for distribution.</p>

My name is <strong>Freeman Chari</strong>, I am a Zimbabwean based in USA.  I went to school in Manicaland and we used to travel to places in Chimanimani  and Chipinge like Biriiri , Mt Selinda nad Chikore for sports.  The predicament  they are in requires that we use whatever means is at our disposal to help.</p>

GoFundMe Zimbabwe Campaign Raises $59,297, Targets $100,000

<p>International money transfer agency World Remit has donated $25,000 to the Red Cross’ relief mission for Cyclone Idai.</p>
<p>The revelation comes after the agency was blasted on social media after it initially refused to waiver transfer fees on donations for Zimbabwe.</p>
<p>After the Twitter backlash, WorldRemit apologised and went a step further by making a donation towards Cyclone Idai relief. The company said in a Twitter post:</p>
<blockquote><p>In the wake of #CycloneIdai, many of our customers have contributed to relief efforts in Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. We’re supporting their generosity by donating $25,000 to the International Red Cross in the three affected countries.</p></blockquote>
<p>Zimbabwean social activist Freeman Chari, who is based in the United States Freeman Chari, who was coordinating the GoFundMe Zimbabwe camping, later on, Wednesday revealed that an understanding with WorldRemit had been reached. Said Chari:</p>
<blockquote><p>World Remit called me today. The issues we had were resolved. Which means we will be able to use their services to Zimbabwe for the purposes of this cyclone fundraiser at no charge. They have also committed to contributing $25K to the Red Cross for Malawi, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.</p></blockquote>

WorldRemit Donates $25 000 Towards Cyclone Idai Relief

<p>United States-based GoFundMe Zimbabwe campaign coordinator Freedom Chari says there has been overwhelming support for the relief efforts. <a href="https://twitter.com/freemanchari/status/1108392958720704514" rel="noopener" target="_blank">He wrote:</a></p>
<blockquote><p>Zimbabwe Relief Updates. The team on the ground has been overwhelmed by the response by the citizens and the corporate world. So far 20 thirty-tonne trucks full of food, blankets, water, clothing etc have been dispatched to Chimanimani. Roads are impassable.</p>
<p>There are teams in Mutare, Bulawayo Masvingo Gweru and other towns. A team of 20 doctors already in Chimanimani. There are people who have availed their services for search and rescue. Several people have availed trucks and helicopters to be used for the delivery.</p>
<p>There has been a team of bikers that have been carrying food through the rough terrain. We are working well with the Civil Protection Unit who ultimately have to coordinate the airlifting of the food to the places that are cut off.</p></blockquote>

GoFundMe Appeal Zimbabwe Relief Updates

<p>WorldRemit has refused to remit funds raised under the GoFundMe platform to Zimbabwe to help the survivors of Tropical Cyclone Idai. Coordinator of the campaign Freeman Chari said:</p>
<blockquote><p>You only know your true friends in a crisis. I approached @WorldRemit for a waiver on fees for us to send funds for cyclone relief in Zimbabwe. Their response shocked me. I have used them before &amp; they send me Ads. Please retweet until everybody knows these guys are unAfrican!</p></blockquote>
<p>In a letter post, Chari wrote:</p>

WorldRemit Refuses To Remit GoFundMe Funds To Zim

<p>A Zimbabwean based in the United States of America, Freeman Chari has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds to assist the victims of Tropical Cyclone Idai in Manicaland and Masvingo provinces. Read the appeal below:</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>WHAT WILL THE MONEY BE USED FOR</strong></p>
<p>The funds raised will be used for relief efforts including food, shelter and water.</p>
<p><strong>WHO WILL MANAGE IN ZIMBABWE</strong></p>
<p>We will work with <strong>Sean Mullens</strong> who is a Pastor at One Church in Harare and Jacque Rowe Anderson who heads the Miracle Missions in Zimbabwe. He will coordinate the efforts together with other relief agencies to see where exactly the need is most.</p>
<p>We have worked with One Church during other emergencies before and we have great trust in their ability to get aid where it is needed.</p>
<p><strong>WHO ARE WE</strong><br/>
My name is Freeman Chari, I am a Zimbabwean based in the USA. I have coordinated a number of relief and emergency efforts in Zimbabwe through this platform. I will be working with other volunteers.</p>
