President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Saturday 19 March, addressed thousands of ZANU PF supporters at Siabuwa Business Centre in Binga ahead of the 26 March by-elections.
Mnangagwa told his supporters that the Government has allocated four Zimbabwe United Passengers Company (ZUPCO) buses to Binga District following a plea by local chiefs.
He said the fact that Binga voted MDC for 20 years is not the fault of the people of Binga but ZANU PF.
ZANU PF has not won in Binga since 2000. Former Binga North MP Prince Dubeko Sibanda (MDC Alliance) who was controversially recalled from Parliament by MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora is contesting in the by-elections.

PICTURES: ZANU PF Rally At Siabuwa, Binga North

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has blocked the Nelson Chamisa-led opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) from holding a campaign rally on 15 March in Siabuwa, Binga.
Officer Commanding Hwange District Chief Superintendent Agnes Robert told CCC that President Emmerson Mnangagwa will visit Hwange on 17 March and, therefore, the police does not have enough manpower to monitor the CCC rally in Binga.
CCC parliamentary candidate for Binga North Prince Dubeko Sibanda on Friday said the party’s lawyers spent the day at the court challenging the police ban. Said Sibanda:

Initially, we had applied that the Binga rally takes place on March 3, but police told us that Mnangagwa was set to visit Binga on the 5th, of which the dates were near each other.
We then applied for the 15th, but they are now telling us stories saying that Mnangagwa will visit Hwange on the 17th and, therefore, the police does not have enough manpower to monitor the Binga rally.
It is surprising because Tsholotsho is in the same province as Hwange and the same police officers that will be deployed at Mnangagwa’s event in Hwange are the same police officers that will be deployed at our rally in Tsholotsho (14th) and Binga on the 15th.

Chief Superintendent Robert has since issued a Prohibition Order against CCC, which she addressed to Memory Unyani, the CCC Matabeleland North provincial organising secretary. Part of the order read:
<blockquote>
Hwange District is hosting a State function on 17 March 2022 which will be graced by the Head of State and Government Cde ED Mnangagwa.
Police officers will be drawn from Siabuwa and Binga among other police stations, from as early as the 15th of March 2022 to give coverage to the event.
This, therefore, leaves your intended participants vulnerable to public disorder and potential harm to life and damage to property as only skeleton manpower will be left to man the police stations.
For the foregoing reason, you are hereby prohibited from continuing with the intended political meeting.

Chief Superintendent Robert warned CCC that it will be an offence if they proceeded with the rally “when the notice is still extant.”
She advised the opposition party to approach her office for negotiation on another date and place to stage their rally.

Police Ban Chamisa's CCC Binga Rally

Fifty-two (52) families in Lubimbi, Binga District in Matabeleland North Province say they will resist eviction from the area after it emerged that Hwange Colliery Company was given a grant to extract coal from the area.
Lubimbi ward councillor, Chrispen Munkuli, said the community was already facing eviction to pave way for the construction of the Gwayi-Shangani Dam but they have resolved to resist. Said Munkuli:

Mining by Hwange will evacuate 52 homesteads, but what we do not know is where the families are going.
We are also facing evacuation over the Gwayi-Shangani Dam and nothing is clear so far on the evacuation areas.
As a community, we have discussed the issue and agreed that we will not agree to the evacuation.
However, we are advised that the mining company is now ready to mine.

District development coordinator (DDC) Land Kabome said he was aware of the issue. He added:
<blockquote>
It has not yet reached that level of evacuation but l am aware that HCC was given a mining claim long back.
The colliery is supposed to go to the community and advise the villagers.
We have not yet engaged the community. We will update you because there will be certain things we expect the HCC to do for the community.

52 Binga Families Face Eviction To Allow Coal Mining

A thief from Binga handed himself to the police after a self-styled prophet told him that the owner of the property had placed a death spell on him.
Earnmore Thobela (25) fell sick sometime after stealing cash, clothes and electrical gadgets from a “Good Samaritan” two years ago.
The court was told that sometime in 2020, Thobela found a job near Last Tshuma’s workplace in 2020, in Filabusi but he had no place to stay. Tshuma then offered him accommodation.
On an undisclosed date, Tshuma allegedly left Thobela at the house and went to his workplace.
Taking advantage of Tshuma’s absence, Thobela stole US$130, two blankets, two black jeans, a pair of shoes, an Itel cell phone and a speaker and disappeared.
In December 2021, Thobela reportedly fell seriously ill and went on to consult a prophet.
The faith healer reportedly told him that the owner of the stolen items was angry and cursed him with death.
Thobela then handed himself to the police in Filabusi for fear of death and was promptly arrested.
He pleaded guilty to a theft charge when he recently appeared before Filabusi magistrate Abednico Diliza Ndebele.
The magistrate sentenced Thobela to eighteen months imprisonment but he will serve only six months behind bars.
Six months of the original sentence were suspended because he was a first-time offender and did not waste the court’s time.
A further six months were suspended on condition that he restitutes the owner of his stolen items.

'Cursed' Thief Hands Self To Police

Lumpy skin disease is reportedly killing livestock, mainly cattle, in Binga, Matabeleland North province.
Lumpy skin is a virulent disease spread by mosquitoes, especially during the rainy season. The symptoms include fever, discharge from the eyes and nose, skin lesions, oedema of the limbs, and swollen lymph nodes.
Last year, about 60 cases were detected in Matabeleland North and 400 cattle were affected by the skin disease in the whole of Matabeleland.
Matabeleland North provincial veterinary service officer Pollex Moyo, however, said they were yet to receive such reports. Moyo told Southern Eye:

We haven’t received any reports concerning the outbreak of lumpy skin disease in Binga yet. Maybe the villagers are yet to report the issue to our department.

But, several villagers in the Tyunga, Njobola, Aiakancele villages under Chief Siamupa told Southern Eye that the affected livestock is dying.
A villager, David Muleya, said the symptoms noted are swollen feet, sometimes from the feet to the knees, white stuff that is produced from the mouths of the beasts, and a rash all over their bodies. 
Lovemore Mudenda said farmers have also reported cases of the virus to the animal husbandry staff or Agritex extension officers who have been working with the farmers advising them to buy antibiotics such as procumbent, and penicillin.

Binga Records An Outbreak Of Lumpy Skin Disease

A Binga based journalist, Mujopeni Mudimba, has allegedly been receiving death threats from unknown people after he wrote a story about the displacement of villagers by a Chinese miner in the district.
The Chinese company has been granted authority by the government to mine coal in that area.
Mudimba was reportedly threatened over a story he wrote on the eviction of villagers in Ward 12 by the Chinese company.
The journalist works for the recently licensed local community radio station, Twasumbuka Community Radio.
According to the station manager, Bbaido Ndhlovu, Mudimba was threatened by an unknown person, who called him twice using a private number.
The unknown caller reportedly warned Mudimba that he would rot in jail and also “die for nothing” if he continues writing stories relating to the evictions.
The Media Institute of Southern Africa (Misa Zimbabwe) on Tuesday condemned the harassment of the journalist. It said:

Misa Zimbabwe strongly condemns any forms of media violations including threats and harassment of journalists.
Journalists should be allowed to exercise their constitutional right to media freedom without fear
Through its watchdog role, the media is allowed to voice and disseminate information on the concerns of communities in which they operate.
Misa Zimbabwe, therefore, urges any persons aggrieved with a story published by any media institution or media practitioner, to approach the Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe or the Zimbabwe Media Commission for adjudication and redress.

"You Will Die For Nothing", Binga Journalist Threatened For Exposing Chinese Firm

The MDC-T led by Douglas Mwonzora has been accused of working with the ruling ZANU PF party to destroy opposition politics in Zimbabwe and create a de facto one-party state.
This comes as the MDC-T reportedly nominated a ZANU PF official to stand for the opposition party in the Binga North by-election.
The MDC-T candidate, Peggy Mudimba, reportedly holds a position in the ZANU PF Women’s League.
Her husband, Mayasi Mudenda, is alleged to be the ZANU PF District Secretary for Administration. Prominent journalist Hopewell Chin’ono <a href="https://twitter.com/daddyhope/status/1486947017419108353">tweeted</a>:

Mwonzora met President Emmerson Mnangagwa twice at State House last year in his pursuit of the suspension of elections and formation of a Government of National Unity.
Mwonzora’s meetings with Mnangagwa raised eyebrows as they took place outside the Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD).
Political commentators have asked why Mnangagwa was ready to meet Mwonzora yet he refused to meet Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa, insisting that he should join POLAD.
Mwonzora wrote to ZEC last month asking the electoral body not to allow any other political party to use the MDC brand and all its derivatives, prompting Chamisa, who had been MDC Alliance, to launch CCC.

MDC-T Selects ZANU PF Member For Binga North By-election

Another Chinese mining company has clashed with villagers who are resisting eviction from their ancestral lands for the establishment of a coal mine in the area.
The firm, Monalof, recently gave the villagers a three months’ notice to vacate their homes to pave way for coal mining activities.
Local Ward 12 councillor Matthias Mwinde said villagers can only move after the company meets their compensation demands which include houses and bigger communal fields. Said Mwinde:
<blockquote>
We discussed this with the company (on Tuesday) and the villagers laid down their demands and concerns. People demanded good shelter, roads and clean water.
The company has found a place where we are going to be placed and it’s in the East of Muchesu village, Binga East site.
This was in preparation for the resettlement and we assume that the company will meet the demands of the people because if they don’t, we are going to have problems with them. 
</blockquote>
People agreed that they will stay put until Monaf constructed the houses.
Mwinde added that Monalof promised 200 square metres of land per household but it’s simply not enough. He said:
<blockquote>
Our biggest challenge is that the company said no one will be provided with the big fields.
We have big fields and we are used to farming, and the promised 200 square metres of land is not enough.
We do livestock farming and the company won’t provide any space for us to keep our livestock.
We are so worried about our future right now because the majority of people are too old to start looking for jobs.
The elders are used to farming. This will be a challenge for them to adapt to a new life at their ages.

Mwinde expressed scepticism over the company’s commitment to fulfilling the promises it made to villagers. He said:
<blockquote>
But in the meantime, they will be providing transport for students. We are also not sure if this is true because schools will be more than five kilometres from where we are moving to. We don’t know if they will fulfil their promises.

Chinese Company Seeks To Evict Binga Villagers For A Coal Mine

Zimbabwe detected 15 cases of leprosy in 2020 alone, most of them in Binga District, Matabeleland North Province, an official has said.
Over the past five years, Zimbabwe has been recording between 5 and 10 new leprosy cases per year.
The Ministry of Health and Child Care leprosy focal person Dr Nicholas Siziba conceded that the country needs to work harder on improving case detection and early diagnosis. He said:
<blockquote>
Of the 15 recorded cases in 2020, nine cases were recorded in Binga and the diagnosed had Grade 2 disability which shows us that a lot of work still needs to be done to improve our case detection and early diagnosis.
We are supposed to be diagnosing cases before they develop a disability or maybe stage 1.
This will also help address the stigma around leprosy in our communities which often associate leprosy with disability and poverty.
</blockquote>
Dr Mkhokheli Ngwenya, the WHO national professional officer for Tuberculosis and Leprosy, said:
<blockquote>
Zimbabwe has recorded an increase in the number of leprosy cases, with nine cases having been recorded in Binga alone over the past years.
In 2020, leprosy cases for Zimbabwe were 15 and although leprosy cases fluctuated substantially in recent years, it tended to increase through the 2007-2020 period ending at 15 in 2020.

According to the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/leprosy/index.html#:~:text=Related%20Pages,the%20disease%20can%20be%20cured.">Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)</a>, leprosy (also known as Hansen’s disease) is an infection caused by slow-growing bacteria called Mycobacterium leprae. It can affect the nerves, skin, eyes, and lining of the nose (nasal mucosa).
Leprosy is curable if diagnosed and treated early.

Zimbabwe Detects 15 Cases Of Leprosy

Lubimbi Power and Gas (Private) Limited plans to establish a 5MW coal-bed methane gas-fired power plant that will be connected to the national grid.
The power plant will be erected in the Lubimbi area on the border of Lupane and Binga districts in Matabeleland North province.
In a public notice, the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) said Lubimbi Power and Gas (Private) Limited has submitted an application to set up a power plant. Said ZERA:

ZERA has received an application from Lubimbi Power and Gas (Private) Limited to construct, own, operate and maintain a five Megawatts coal bed methane gas-fired power plant in Lubimbi in Lupane district in Matabeleland North province.
The licence application by Lubimbi Power and Gas (Private) Limited was done in terms of the provision of sections 42 and 46 of the Electricity Act (Chapter 13:19).

Lubimbi Power and Gas intends to generate power from the proposed coal-bed methane gas for use by Rio Energy Private Limited, a subsidiary of RioZim.
According to ZERA, a two-kilometre 33KV overhead line from the Lubimbi plant to Gwayi 33KV feeder will connect the power plant to the national grid.
To date, ZERA has received about 100 independent power producer applications with many of them being on solar plants.

5 Megawatts Methane Gas-fired Power Plant For Lupane

Scores of households in Binga District, Matabeleland North Province, whose homesteads were destroyed by floods almost two years ago, are still waiting for the Government to provide them with shelter.
More than 215 homesteads located on the confluence of Sibwambwa, Sikande, Namapande and Manyenyengwa rivers were destroyed by floods on 10 February last year, displacing 967 people.
Civil Protection Unit (CPU) director Nathan Nkomo told VicFallsLive that 6 out of 37 homesteads in the Nsungwale area have been completed though not yet roofed. Said Nkomo:
<blockquote>
We need something like $80 million to finish rebuilding those houses, but if you go through our national contingency plan in the 2021-2022 rainfall season, there is a figure of US$101 million which talks of a backlog infrastructure, which requires rehabilitation.
(Chininga Bridge) might be one of those because we came together and all the provinces presented the outstanding works of infrastructure being undertaken in their provinces, so I wouldn’t be surprised.

The Chininga bridge, which connected Nsungwale and Siabuwa and linked the centres with Karoi, Gokwe and Kariba, was destroyed by the floods.
The Government has been accused of abandoning the villagers as some of them have since deserted the camps that were set up by the CPU citing lack of amenities and food.
However, Nkomo denied the accusations saying they have provided the flood victims with “almost everything” including food. He said:
<blockquote>
In those circumstances, people will always say something because they were used to their own ways of living, but as far as we know we have been giving them food when that calamity of flash floods happened.
We provided them with almost everything from grains and relish.
The reason why they keep going back to their destroyed homesteads is that where these rivers meet they deposit some soils, which are very good for agriculture and this is why even in Tsholotsho you see some going back to the confluence of Gwayi and Shangani rivers.

Govt "Abandons" Binga Flood Victims

Binga villagers facing eviction to pave way for the construction of the Gwayi-Shangani Dam have identified a piece of land in the Nakanono area, which they believe is suitable for their resettlement.
The construction of the dam is set to displace around 2 000 villagers from Lubimbi in Binga.
Dam committee chairperson, Edmond Sibanda, said government assessment had been completed, so was an agreement on the land the villagers would be relocated to. Sibanda said:
<blockquote>
Communities have agreed on Nakonono area, which is the former Kana Block farms. The land is near Shangani River, and is also close to the Victoria Falls-Bulawayo Road.
However, we are still waiting for a response from the government.
That is the land we want as a community and it is big enough to support meaningful livelihoods for all the affected communities.
</blockquote>
However, Lubimbi ward councillor Chrispen Munkuli said they were still debating the issue because the council has not yet visited the place for assessment. He added:
<blockquote>
We were advised that workers from the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency also have to visit the place and give a way forward on the valuation exercise.
</blockquote>
The government recently carried out an assessment on the value of the property which is likely to be affected by the expansion of the Gwayi-Shangani Dam in Lubimbi with a view to compensate the evictees in United States dollars.
The Gwayi-Shangani Dam project, which is part of the Zambezi Water Project, is scheduled to be completed by December 2022.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has said it is probing murder cases reported in Hwange, Concession, Binga, Gokwe and Zvishavane recently. Police urged members of the public to resolve disputes amicably. Pindula News presents a statement by the police.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police is investigating various murder cases which were reported countrywide. It is sad to note that some of the perpetrators are people who would have been left in custody of the victims while other cases are arising out of disputes which can be resolved through dialogue and engagement by the concerned parties. 
In Hwange, a 3-year-old male juvenile was left in custody of his stepfather, Nkatazo Penga (38) while the mother, Estere Tembo (40), visited a family field at Nekatambe village Dete, on 5th September 2021. The minor was later found dead with bruises and assault marks all over the body. Police arrested the suspect who was found carrying an axe. 
In a related case which occurred in Binga, a man, Mapei Dhongola hit the victim, Miccah Mudenda (34) with a stone on the head after the victim restrained the suspect from assaulting people for an unknown reason at Siachilaba Business Centre on 03rd October 2021. The victim was referred to Siansundu Clinic where he died upon arrival.

Police Investigating Murder Cases In Hwange, Binga, Zvishavane, Concession, Gokwe

Long-serving Chief Kavula (90) of Lubimbi area, Binga District, has died following complications with his heart and lungs.
His family confirmed his death at Binga Hospital on Sunday after being sick for a long time.
Chief Kavula, who was born Muleya Nkamu Mukusi, was the last surviving senior chief in Binga after the district lost Chief Sinamagonde who died at the age of 78 in November last year.
Binga has 17 chiefs and a majority of them are from the younger generation.
At the time of his death, Chief Kavula was pushing for clarity on the fate of more than 400 households from his area who are set to be displaced by the construction of the Gwayi-Shangani dam.
He also feared that the communities were going to lose on their culture, grazing land and natural springs after the completion of the dam being constructed by China International Water and Electric Corporation (Pvt) Ltd at a cost of US$147 million.
The project aims to bring to an end the perennial water shortages in Bulawayo and other areas in the Matabeleland North Province.
Six villages namely Kamombo, Chubuyu, Kanjondo, Bumputu, Chiboni and Kavunikwa making up Lubimbi 1 and 2 will be affected by the dam whose completion is set for this December.
There is no communication yet about where they will be resettled.
Lubimbi Ward 20 Councillor Chrispen Munkuli said the chief’s death had left the community without a leader. Said Munkuli:

Our chief died on Sunday and this is a sad loss to the whole community especially at this time when we were still pushing for clarity on what will happen to people when the dam is completed.

Chief Kavula was born in 1931. He was appointed Chief Kavula on 1 February 1984, replacing his brother Zenge Kavula who had died in 1978.
The traditional leader and his subjects settled in Lubimbi in the 1950s.
Chief Kavula will be buried on Friday at his homestead.
He is survived by four wives, 16 children, and 49 grand and great-grandchildren.

More than 100 pregnant women have been quarantined in Matabeleland North after they tested positive for COVID-19.
According to Matabeleland North Provincial Medical Director Dr Munekai Padingani, of the 110 expecting mothers, 70 are at Binga District Hospital, 37 are at Tsholotsho District Hospital while 3 are at Lukosi Hospital in Hwange.
He said most of the women were in stable condition and have mild symptoms and what is also positive is that the virus has no effect on unborn babies.
Padingani said the women could have contracted the coronavirus while going to buy foodstuffs from business centres near the hospitals.
In order to curb the spread of the virus among expecting mothers, health authorities are now restricting movement and they are also being tested when they check in to waiting shelters at respective health institutions. Said Padingani:
<blockquote>Those mothers go out to buy food and they meet different people hence they have contracted the virus.
When they come in we test them but now we have to keep them inside and restrict movement.
The virus doesn’t affect the unborn babies and it’s only in the event that the mother delivers while positive that measures have to be taken to protect the baby.</blockquote>
Padingani said no pregnant woman has been vaccinated in the province as the country is yet to adopt World Health Organisation (WHO) advice to also vaccinate expecting mothers.
WHO recently released guidelines certifying the vaccines safe for use by everyone above the age of 17, including pregnant and breastfeeding women.
Pregnant and breastfeeding women were not being vaccinated as there were fears the drug could have adverse effects on the unborn and breastfeeding babies.

110 Pregnant Women At 3 Hospitals Catch Coronavirus

North-west Binga and parts of the Zambezi Catchment area on Monday experienced a minor earthquake, the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has confirmed.
The tremor hit the area around 12:32 pm, 70km northwest of Binga, but no damage was reported. MSD senior weather forecaster James Ngoma said Tuesday:
<blockquote>There was a 3.6 magnitude earthquake in Zambia, 70km northwest of Binga. No damages were reported.
Most of these earthquakes with a magnitude below 5.5 do not cause any significant damage.</blockquote>
Ngoma said these tremors were a common occurrence around the Kariba Dam due to the pressure exerted on the earth’s crust by the weight of water. He said:
<blockquote>The tremors are referred to as load-induced tremors or specifically reservoir-induced tremors.
In the case of the Kariba Dam, they are a result of the earth crust’s response to the water load or weight of water given the size of the dam.</blockquote>
Ngoma added that the reservoir-induced tremors had been occurring since 1963 when the Kariba Dam started filling up.

He said over 1 000 tremors of magnitude 4.0 have been recorded but these termors do not affect the structural integrity of the dam.
Meanwhile, two tremors with a magnitude of 4.0 were recorded in the Zambezi Valley around Kariba Dam on April 1 and April 2 in 2020 at 19:29 hours and 17:31 hours, respectively.
The epicentre of the 1 April earthquake was said to have been approximately 3km southwest of the Spurwing Island Lodge, or 27km South of the Kariba Dam.
The epicentre of the 2 April earthquake was approximately 65km east of the Kariba Dam wall.

3.6 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Northwest Binga

A Binga man has been arrested for axing his uncle to death following a dispute on whether to sell or slaughter the former’s cow.
Police say William Sibanga Muzamba (57) was drinking traditional beer with his 62-year-old uncle Simati Mefias Mudimba from Chief Pashu area when he consulted about selling his cow.
The deceased, Samati Mefias Mudimba, reportedly advised against the sale of the cow suggesting it should be <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/08/21/midlands-cattle-dying-because-of-lack-of-water-and-pastures-report/">slaughtered for meat since it was old and had lost weight.</a>
The accused, William Sibanga Mudimba, is said to have objected to the idea of slaughtering the cow leading to the dispute.
Witnesses said it was the now-deceased Mudimba who first pulled the axe and threatened to strike his nephew with it but was disarmed.
Matabeleland North police spokesperson Inspector Glory Banda confirmed the murder and arrest of Muzamba. Said Inspector Banda:

A man was murdered by his nephew with an axe following a misunderstanding over sale of a beast.
On 24 April around 5pm William Sibanga Muzamba and Simati Mefias Mudimba were drinking traditional beer at the informant Fanson Muleya’s homestead when the two had an argument.
Muzamba was telling his uncle Mudimba about selling his beast but he (deceased) told him not to sell it and suggested that it be slaughtered because it was old and had lost weight.

The deceased reportedly started insulting his nephew and proceeded to pull a small axe from his trousers, threatening to kill him.
Muzamba is said to have disarmed his uncle before striking him twice on the head causing his instant death.
Other villagers fled from the scene while the owner of the homestead, Fanson Muleya, ran to Pashu police post where he filed a report.
Muzamba surrendered himself to the police leading to his arrest for murder.

Man Kills Uncle Over Cow Selling Dispute

A fifty-year-old woman from Binga reportedly struck her boyfriend with an axe at the back of the neck after he went to drink beer leaving her alone.
It is the state’s case that in March last year, the accused, Saria Munkombwe of Siawara village under Chief Siachilaba and Mr Gilbert Mumpande of neighbouring Siafugama village under Chief Saba fell in love and arranged to visit each other’s homestead weekly on a rotational basis.
They agreed to spend a week at Munkombwe’s homestead and the following at Mr Mumpande’s.
In October of last year, the duo arrived at Mumpande’s homestead who left in the morning to drink beer at a neighbouring village only to return around 8 pm.
Munkombwe had gone when he returned and he then followed her to her homestead that is said to be about 20 km from his.
Munkombwe came out when he knocked on the door, became violent, pushed him and went back into the house to take an axe.
She struck Mumpane on the back of the neck causing him to bleed profusely. In the morning, she took the axe and handed herself to the police.
Munkombwe pleaded not guilty to attempted murder charges when she appeared before Hwange regional magistrate Mr Collet Ncube.
She was remanded out of custody on her own cognisance to April 24 for the continuation of trial.

50-Year-Old Woman Axes Boyfriend, Hands Herself To Police

A gold panner from Binga is fighting for his life at Binga District Hospital where he is reportedly unconscious after a botched suicide attempt.
Lastmore Ngwenya (24) tried to kill himself after he had raped and beheaded his wife, Muchite Munkuli (23), who had ended their relationship.
The couple is from Chamateme village under Chief Siachilaba in Binga District and the two were married for an undisclosed period of time.
According to prosecutors, Munkuli fell sick in October last year and consulted a self-proclaimed prophet who told her she had been bewitched by her husband’s father prompting her to pack her bags and leave her matrimonial home to live with her parents.
The matter involving the couple’s separation was heard by Chief Siachilaba on Christmas Eve after village head Amos Mungombe had referred the matter to the higher traditional court after failing to reconcile the couple.
Chief Siachilaba summoned the two’s families and on December 24, ruled that the marriage was no longer safe and a consensus was reached for the couple to separate and share property.
However, on the next day, which was Christmas Day, Ngwenya allegedly killed his wife and then cut his own throat with an unknown sharp object.
Munkuli’s bloodstained body was found by her sister around 8 am and had a deep cut on the throat, both palms and chin, with her undergarment torn and removed to knee level while there was semen on her privates.
Binga magistrate Urgent Vundla remanded Mnkuli to next week Friday on his hospital bed for a charge of murder and rape.

Four people escaped death by a whisker after the plane they were in crash-landed on Wednesday morning in the Luunga area in Binga.
The Herald reports that the single-engine Cessna plane, registration number ZSIZG a C210, which is believed to have left Kariba Airport on Wednesday morning ceased mid-air at Chibuyu in the Luunga area of Binga under chief Sinakatenge about 180km from Binga.
The plane was headed for Sijarira Forests on the South Western shores of Lake Kariba when it crash-landed.
Sijarira Forests are a hit with wilderness loving tourists as they offer game viewing, fishing and swimming opportunities.
The four were rescued and transported to a camp in Sengwa for first aid before they were ferried by a boat to Rhino Camp and later transferred to a health facility in Kariba.

A woman from Chivhu was this week arrested after her neighbors tipped off law enforcement agents for neglecting her child who later died in hospital a day after she was arrested.
This was revealed by ZRP on Twitter which stated that the woman abused her 1 year 9 months old child by leaving her unattended without food and not changing her diaper for 3 days.

<blockquote>A Chivhu woman was arrested on 27/12/20 for ill treating her one year nine months old daughter. The suspect abandoned the child at home without food or being changed diapers for over three days and left her unattended.
Police received a tip-off from members of the public before rescuing the baby and taking her to a local hospital. Heavy rains in Binga ‘s Lusulu area which is under Chief Sinamagonde left over 200 people homeless after it destroyed over 30 homes on Sunday, the Chronicle reports.
It is reported that a 15 minutes heavy downpour followed by heavy winds and thunderstorms destroyed homes and left villagers including orphans, widows, the elderly, and children affected by the short but devastating downpour.
Narrating the disaster Ms. Tryphine Ngwenya who lost her stock of maize meal and her home’s roof said:
<blockquote>It was a terrifyingly violent storm. I could feel the foundation of my house shaking as the structure took a pounding from driving rain and strong winds.
Minutes later, the wind tore off the roof and bits of plaster rained into the house. I have never been so afraid. I watched helplessly as the roof and trusses of my entire house were blown off.
My son was screaming. I thought of rushing to my in-laws place but couldn’t because the winds were very strong and violent while the rain blinded me.</blockquote>
Another victim, a widow named Fortune Javure who also lost part of her home narrated her ordeal and said:
<blockquote>We had to quickly remove the furniture which was in the affected rooms. Some of the property was heavily soaked by water while some of the electric gadgets were also damaged. It’s a relief that I was not injured as I managed to escape together with my four children,
The rains lasted about 15 minutes but they caused severe damage and I am still in a state of shock. I don’t even know how I will raise money to replace the damaged property since I am a widow</blockquote>
Many people who spoke to the Chronicle about the downpour said they were shocked by the short but devastating downpour. CPU was quick to respond to the disaster and it was already distributing maize to the victims.

Heavy Rains Destroy 30+ Homes In Binga

A 77-year-old Binga Johanne Masowe Apostolic Church member was trampled to death by an elephant during a prayer vigil in Siabua, Binga last week on Friday.
Saria Muzamba of Sinamsanga village under Chief Siabua tripped and fell while other congregants fled in different directions as the elephants descended on the shrine at around 2 am.
Police and Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority confirmed the death of Muzamba. The police said:
<blockquote>On 11 September at around 2 am Saria Muzamba and other eight members of Johanne Masowe apostolic church were sleeping in a bushy area near Sinamansanga Secondary School where they were holding a night prayer service.
A herd of elephants came and attacked the congregants who ran away in different directions.</blockquote>
When the church members returned to the shrine, they found Muzamba already dead with bruises on the face and chest.
Police and Zimparks rangers attended the scene and retrieved the body.

Elephant Kills Worshipper At Masowe

A GMB Binga Depot supervisor Zebron Hungwe a clerk Gladys Mugande, and a district’s social welfare officer Regret Mudungwe were arrested after they allegedly stole close to 4 tonnes of drought relief maize from the depot, The Chronicle reports.
The trio reportedly connived and forged invoices which they apparently used to divert 74 by 50kg bags of maize from the depot to an unknown place, before claiming that they maize had been delivered to Sunrise Children’s Home at Binga Centre and Kabwe Children’s Home in Pashu within the district.
The matter came to light in court where the 3 stood accused of fraud and theft of trust property. It is the state’s case that:
<blockquote>During the period extending from July to September and at GMB Binga depot, the three accused persons connived and issued out dispatch documents purporting to account for maize issued to Sunrise Children’s Home and Kabwe Children’s Home
Mr Mabhaudi visited Sunrise Children’s Home for investigations and established that no such delivery of maize had been made. The home has a monthly allocation of four bags of maize which its authorities confirmed receiving for the month of August as opposed to 32 bags as alleged through the forged invoices.
Kabwe Children’s Home has a monthly allocation of seven bags of maize contrary to 46 indicated in the fraudulent records by the trio.</blockquote>
The trio was released on bail and investigation are still ongoing at the depot to determine the amount of maize the trio might have stolen.

GMB Binga Depot Supervisor, 2 Other Arrested For Stealing 4 Tonnes Of Drought Relief Maize

The government has distributed rice and maize meal to communities in Binga, Sunday News reports. While addressing beneficiaries that had gathered to receive the rice and mealie meal, Matabeleland North Provincial Minister Richard Moy said the food they were distributing was from VP Chiwenga who according to him hearkened their call for food shortages and made the distribution possible:
<blockquote>As you know we are always here in Binga, last time I came with VP Chiwenga. Zanu-PF leadership managed to talk to VP Chiwenga where they complained about hunger here in Binga especially the areas surrounding Bulawayo Kraal as there was no yield during the last farming season as the irrigation was not operating.
The Zanu-PF Central Committee members from the district requested for food from the Vice-President which is the food I am here to hand over. VP Chiwenga liaised with President Mnangagwa who in turn advised the Vice- President to act with vigour to bring food here before the situation further deteriorates,</blockquote>
Moyo also said they will be launching the Pfumvudza/Gatshompo project in the region soon:

A teenager from Chief Saba’s area in Binga took his own life by hanging and left a suicide note claiming he was tired of living after he admitted to r_ping and impregnating his 17-year-old niece.
According to Matabeleland North police spokesperson Chief Inspector Siphiwe Makonese, the 18-year-old boy was summoned by family elders on Saturday on suspicion that he had r_ped and impregnated his niece.
The teenager allegedly admitted to having slept with his niece and then disappeared from home on Sunday.
Following a search by villagers, the now deceased’s body was found hanging with a piece of wire from a tree in a nearby bush on Monday morning. Chief Insp Makonese said:
<blockquote>We received a case of a teenager who committed suicide after family members leant that he had impregnated his niece and summoned him for a family meeting.
He allegedly hanged himself after being asked about the issue. We are concerned because this is one of the many cases of abuse of girls by a close relative.</blockquote>

Binga Teen 'Tired Of Living' Commits Suicide

A cross border courier popularity known an omalayitsha Lenos Sithole (41) of Magwegwe North suburb in Bulawayo was arrested after he teamed up with unnamed accomplices and pulled down 640kgs of overhead copper cables valued at US$200 000,  The Chronicle reports.
Sithole who is denying the charges levelled against him is said to have loaded the copper cables into a Toyota quantum with South African plates before they were intercepted at a fuel queue at Cross Dete.
In the court papers filed on behalf on Sithole in his bail application, Sithole denies the charges levelled against him and said:
<blockquote>There is no eye witness to state that indeed I travelled to and from Binga in the vehicle in question. I was heavily assaulted by police officers who arrested me while at my home. I met one Insurance Nhongo for the first time in prison and police are misleading the court by stating that I was at Cross Dete and also participated in the alleged crime which took place in Binga as I was never there
Police officers are only assuming that I was in the vehicle because of the TIP and my passport and nothing else. There was no identification parade, not even a single witness who can safely say I was present at the crime scene save for inadmissible confession from Nhongo
I was born in this country and have lived in this country for the better part of my life. I do not have the means and ability to escape the jurisdiction beyond the reach of law enforcement agents, and I am of fixed abode.</blockquote>
The state-led by Mrs Sifiso Ndlovu-Sibanda opposed bail and said there was overwhelming evidence against Sithole who reportedly committed the crime on 10 January this year.

A Malayitsha And Accomplices Pull Down 640 KGs Of Overhead ZESA Cables In Binga - Report

People whose homes and property were destroyed during the Binga floods in February are still living in tents 4 months after the floods as the government fails to provide alternative accommodation for them, according to Binga North legislator Prince Dubeko Sibanda, the Daily News reports.
Speaking to the publication, Dubeko said the flood victims were also left to fend for themselves despite losing everything in the floods that displaced them. Dubeko said:
<blockquote>The victims are living in a sorry state. They have even forgotten about help coming from the government because no one is talking about it now. Some have left those tents and are now staying with relatives after realising that nothing was forthcoming.</blockquote>
When contacted for comment Matabeleland North Provincial Affairs minister Richard Moyo said the COVID-19 pandemic had derailed the government’s plans to assist the victims:
<blockquote>What I know is that the villagers had their stands pegged elsewhere in preparation for their relocation, but I will have to check with the district administrator on the progress that has been made so far.
Everything would have been done in time, but unfortunately there was Covid-19, so this generally disturbed our entire plans for the affected villagers. Yes, we are aware that they are still in tents in this winter season, but I can assure you that we are working on that as government.</blockquote>
One person died in the floods that displaced many people in Nsungulwe village in Binga.
