A childhood grudge allegedly turned violent in Matibi last week when a 27-year-old man was stabbed during a drinking session after an old dispute from their school days resurfaced.

Mandlaenkosi Chikwenhure, of Mafirenyika Village under Chief Mawarire, sustained injuries after fellow villager Aaron Ndou allegedly attacked him during an argument at Hungwe Bar in Matibi Business Centre.

According to the spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in Masvingo Province, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa, the two men, who grew up together, were drinking beer at the bar at around 10 pm on 8 June 2026 when Ndou allegedly raised a fight they had been involved in as children.

What began as a discussion about the long-forgotten incident reportedly escalated into a heated confrontation, culminating in Chikwenhure being stabbed in the back.

“Ndou reportedly told Chikwenhure that when they were young, he had beaten and defeated him, sparking a heated exchange,” said Inspector Dhewa.

The disagreement reportedly turned violent when Ndou allegedly shoved Chikwenhure out of the bar before pulling a knife from his pocket and stabbing him in the back.

Chikwenhure suffered a serious wound and was rushed to Mnene Hospital, where he received treatment. Police said he is now in a stable condition.

Following the alleged attack, Ndou is said to have fled the scene and has not yet been apprehended. Police have launched a manhunt and are continuing their investigations.

Inspector Dhewa warned against carrying weapons, saying such conduct frequently escalates otherwise manageable disputes into serious criminal offences.

He urged members of the public to settle disagreements amicably and not allow long-standing grudges or past conflicts to degenerate into acts of violence.
