A 52-year-old man from Marombedze village in Chief Nhema’s area, Zaka, is fighting for his life at Mashoko Mission Hospital after he was attacked with a machete by his brother over a long-standing family grudge.
The victim, Brighton Chisenga, sustained severe injuries to the head, left hand and chest during the attack, which occurred at around 4 pm on 10 August as he was returning from local shops.
Police said Brighton encountered his brother, Obvious Chisenga, along a footpath. Obvious is said to have immediately threatened to kill him.
When Brighton asked what grudge warranted such hostility, Obvious produced a machete from his trousers and struck him on the head, causing him to collapse.
As Brighton tried to get up, his brother continued the assault, striking him again on the left hand and chest.
Brighton managed to escape and sought refuge at a nearby homestead belonging to Patrick Dzinovatonga.
Dzinovatonga rushed him to Mashoko Mission Hospital, where he was admitted in a serious condition.
Masvingo Provincial Police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dehwa confirmed the incident to TellZim News and said the suspect remains at large.
“We have a report that a brother is being sought for attempted murder of his brother over a family grudge,” said Inspector Dehwa.
“The accused produced a machete from his trousers and struck the complainant on the head, and when he fell, he continued attacking him on the hand and chest. The victim managed to escape and sought refuge at a nearby homestead.”
Police have appealed to members of the public with information on Obvious Chisenga’s whereabouts to contact their nearest police station.
