A 35-year-old man from Sanangwe Village under Chief Chikwanda in Masvingo has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to raping his brother’s two wives, saying he was “fixing” his brother, who had wronged him.
The man, who is believed to be a member of an apostolic sect, appeared before Masvingo Regional Magistrate Innocent Bepura, who handed down the sentence on 14 July 2026. He admitted to two counts of rape.
Prosecutor Innocent Mudzingwa told the court that on 20 June 2026, the accused went to one complainant’s bedroom while she was sleeping, broke down the door and demanded to know where her husband, his brother, was.
When he realised his brother was not there, he took a metal rod from the room and went to the other complainant’s room, where she was sleeping with her husband.
He forced open the door, entered and assaulted his brother with the metal rod. The brother managed to escape, leaving his wives behind.
The accused then slapped the second complainant with open hands, telling her he was going to have sex with her as punishment for allowing her husband to escape. She tried to resist, but he threatened to kill her before raping her.
He then returned to the first complainant and raped her as well before walking away towards his home.
At around 6 am, the first complainant told her mother-in-law what had happened. Her husband called a family meeting, at which it was agreed that the matter should be reported to the police.
In court, the accused pleaded guilty and said he had been unhappy with his brother since 2016, when the brother allegedly refused to give him his children’s birth certificates.
He also claimed the first wife had instructed him to rape the second wife as well, as a way of fixing his brother.
The court took into account his personal circumstances. He has two wives, one of whom is pregnant, and six children.
