A 28-year-old clerk from Dete, Hwange, has been jailed for 10 months after stealing more than US$2,000 from the primary school where she worked.
Hezel Nyoni was convicted and sentenced by the Hwange Magistrates’ Court for the theft of US$2,055 from Dopota Primary School.
The prosecution proved that on 5 June 2026 at around 8 am, the school’s deputy headmaster, Sheba Nkomo, went to the school safe to collect money for banking.
Nyoni informed her that she had already collected US$1,100, after taking the safe keys from Nkomo’s office without her knowledge.
The deputy headmaster immediately reported the incident to the school administrator.
An audit of the school’s finances was subsequently conducted on 8 June 2026, which revealed further irregularities.
The audit established that Nyoni had defrauded the school of an additional US$955 by withholding receipts, in addition to the US$1,100 she had taken from the safe.
The matter was reported to the police, leading to Nyoni’s arrest. She has since returned US$600, leaving a balance of US$1,455 unrecovered.
In sentencing, the court imposed 26 months’ imprisonment. Eight months were suspended for five years on condition that she does not commit a similar offence within that period. A further eight months were suspended on condition that she restitutes US$1,455 to the school.
She will therefore serve an effective 10 months in prison.
