Motorbikes, tricycles and trailers do not have to pay Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) radio licence fees.

Deputy Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Omphile Marupi told Parliament on Wednesday that the exemption is applied automatically in the licensing system.

The clarification came after questions were raised about why motorbike owners were being made to pay for radio licences, even though their vehicles do not have radio receivers.

“As a Ministry, the position is for the motorbikes, tricycles and trailers; they are all exempt from paying a radio licence,” said Marupi.

“According to the radio licence, a fee is charged for motorbikes as they are treated as exempt vehicles within the system. The exemption is automatically applied during the licensing process and does not attract any payment or special application by the motorbike owner.”

“This position has been in effect since the inception of the mandatory vehicle radio licensing framework implemented in July 2025. As such, motorbike owners are not required to pay the ZBC radio licence fee as a condition for licensing their motorbikes.”
