Former Finance Minister Tendai Biti, now leading the Constitution Defenders Forum (CDF), and fellow activist Morgan Ncube have been granted bail of US$500 each by a court in Mutare. However, they have been barred from holding public meetings without police clearance.
Biti (59) and Ncube (45) were arrested last Saturday while organising a meeting to discuss the controversial Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3.
They are facing charges of breaching the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act after allegedly convening a public gathering without notifying the police.
As part of the bail conditions, Magistrate Honest Musiyiwa ordered the two to remain at their given addresses, report to the police every two weeks—Biti at ZRP Borrowdale and Ncube at Beitbridge—and not to organise any gathering without police approval.
Prosecutors had opposed bail, arguing that the pair were flight risks and could interfere with investigations.
