A trial date has been set for former finance minister and Constitutional Defenders Forum (CDF) convener Tendai Biti, who faces a charge of convening a public meeting without notifying the regulating authority.
Biti and CDF national programmes director Morgan Ncube will stand trial at Mutare Magistrates Court on 16 and 17 July 2026. The pair appeared before Magistrate Honest Musiiwa on Tuesday for routine remand and were advised of the dates.
They are alleged to have contravened section 7(5) of the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act [Chapter 11:23].
The court also relaxed their bail conditions, ordering them to report to their nearest CID Law and Order section once a month, down from twice a week. Both remain on US$500 bail each.
The meeting allegedly took place at 26B Carrington, Darlington, in Mutare.
The State alleges that Biti, in his capacity as CDF convener, and Ncube, as national programmes director, acted in common purpose to convene the gathering.
It is claimed the meeting was attended by about 30 people, including a journalist from Wasu Post, and was held to discuss the Constitutional Amendment Bill No 3.
Biti and Ncube are represented by Chris Ndlovu of Gonese and Ndlovu Legal Practitioners.
