Mbizo MP, Corban Madzivanyika (CCC), has urged Zimbabweans to reject Constitutional Amendment Bill Number 3, which would, among other things, extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term by two years to 2030 and allow traditional leaders to get involved in politics.

In an interview with the Masvingo Mirror, Madzivanyika called on citizens to speak out against the Bill during public consultations.

He argued that the proposed legislation was designed to benefit “criminals around President Mnangagwa” rather than ordinary Zimbabweans.

He also said the Bill is intended to entrench Mnangagwa’s power, ignoring the aspirations of the people. Said Madzivanyika:

“I strongly condemn the proposed Bill, which threatens to undermine Zimbabwe’s democracy and entrench authoritarian rule.

“The amendments are a blatant attempt by President Mnangagwa to extend his grip on power, disregarding the will of the people and the country’s constitutional integrity.

“I call upon the people to oppose the amendments. They are meant to serve the personal aspirations of criminals around President Mnangagwa.

“The opposition to this amendment is widespread, with opposition groups, war veterans, and civil society organisations united in their rejection of these changes.

“They recognise that these amendments prioritise political survival over the needs of the people, threatening economic reform and social justice.”

He slammed the idea of having Parliament elect the President, calling it a serious blow to Zimbabweans’ right to choose their leader.

Madzivanyika also warned that extending presidential terms from five to seven years won’t be the end of it, suggesting those in power might be tempted to delay elections indefinitely. He added:

“As a Parliamentarian, I got the current mandate from the people. But to then say, I can extend my life in Parliament for a further two years without the same mandate I got in 2023 is just outrageous, irrational and egocentric!”
