The Hwange Regional Magistrates’ Court has convicted a 41-year-old man, sentencing him to 20 years in prison for the rape of his 16-year-old sister-in-law.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the victim had been living at the offender’s homestead in Lupane.
The offender took advantage of her mental vulnerability and his role as a trusted family member.
The abuse occurred repeatedly over six months, from November 2024 to May 2025.
On the first occasion, the offender’s sister pushed the victim into a bedroom where the offender was waiting, locking the door behind her.
The offender then stripped the victim of her clothes and raped her. During the assault, he threatened her, demanding that she remain quiet when she tried to cry out for help.
The abuse continued on multiple occasions. When the situation came to light in May 2025, a community member discovered what had happened.
In retaliation, the offender and his sister assaulted the victim with a sjambok and a stick, threatening her not to speak to anyone about the abuse.
The matter was reported to the Zimbabwe Republic Police in Lupane, and medical and psychiatric reports confirming the victim’s condition and experience were compiled.
