An unidentified man narrowly escaped death but lost both legs after being hit by a night train while lying on the tracks on Sunday.

Bulawayo Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the incident.

She said it happened on 30 November 2025, at around 9 PM, when a National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) train driver came across a man lying on the railway line. Said Inspector Msebele:

“The male adult train driver, aged 43 and residing in Rangemore, was travelling from Bulawayo to Victoria Falls when he came across an unknown man lying on the railway line near Luveve.

“The victim was hit and dragged by the clutch (bumper) of the train for a short distance, resulting in both his legs being severed.”

Despite his severe injuries, the man survived.

Inspector Msebele said he also suffered head bruises and was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.

She took the opportunity to issue a stern warning to the public about the dangers of railway lines. Said Insp. Msebele:

“Railway tracks must be treated as high-risk zones. They are not meant for resting, crossing at undesignated points or loitering.”

Inspector Msebele also appealed to families who may be missing a relative to visit Mpilo Central Hospital, where the victim is being treated, to help with identification.
