The government is set to reduce Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) licence fees, a change that will be finalised by January next year.

This was said by Information, Media and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere while speaking at the Media Alliance of Zimbabwe (MAZ) annual stakeholders’ conference in Harare recently. He said:

“We have a whole government approach to reduce prices, that is, the licence fees of ZBC.

“The reduction will be coming by January, I am sure that’s when the reduction will be finalised.”

The government’s decision to reduce ZBC licence fees comes after months of intense public outcry over the mandatory vehicle radio licence fees introduced earlier this year.

On May 23, 2025, the Broadcasting Services Amendment Act (No. 2 of 2025) came into force.

This new legislation made it compulsory for all motorists to pay ZBC radio licence fees when obtaining a ZINARA licence disc or renewing vehicle insurance.

Under the current tariff structure, private vehicle owners pay US$23 per quarter (or US$92 per year), while corporate-owned vehicles pay US$50 per quarter, amounting to US$200 annually.

The requirement applies to all motorists who own a vehicle with a radio set, even if they do not receive ZBC radio signals.

Motorists without radios are required to apply for an exemption affidavit, and those who fail to pay the licence fee are barred from obtaining their vehicle insurance or licence disc.
