Democratic Party (DP) president Wurayayi Zembe has condemned ZANU PF’s proposal to amend Zimbabwe’s Constitution to allow President Emmerson Mnangagwa to remain in power until 2030.
In a statement, Zembe pledged to resist the proposed changes and urged citizens to step up their efforts to defend the Constitution and oppose any move to extend Mnangagwa’s rule. Said Zembe:
“The people’s fight for democracy and democratic governance in Zimbabwe must be completed and the time is now.”
DP views the move as a clear attempt to abolish the upcoming general elections and entrench dictatorship.
Zembe said the 2013 Constitution has always been manipulated to serve the interests of ZANU PF, former President Robert Mugabe, and President Mnangagwa. He said:
“The Constitution has failed to facilitate peaceful, free, and fair general elections, as well as the formation of legitimate governments in 2013, 2018, and 2023. It lacks effective protective mechanisms for democratic processes.
“Although the Constitution provides for citizens to vote for their preferred candidates, Zimbabwe’s elections have been plagued by systemic rigging over the past 45 years.
“On October 18, 2025, ZANU PF members gathered in Mutare and resolved to extend Mnangagwa’s rule beyond 2030, effectively aiming for a life presidency.
“Mnangagwa seeks to remain in office until death, echoing the failed ambitions of his predecessor, Mugabe.
“The party’s resolution amounts to abolishing the 2028 harmonised general elections due to fears of losing power.”
