A Harare man has been sentenced to two years in prison following a fatal road accident in Borrowdale earlier this year.
Ernest Ringisai Mauna, 39, was handed a 36-month prison term by the Harare Magistrates’ Court for culpable homicide, with 12 months suspended, meaning he will serve an effective 24 months behind bars.
The incident occurred on 14 April 2025, when Mauna, driving a Nissan Hardbody along Harare Drive, was speeding and failed to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead.
He collided with a Toyota Wish, triggering a multi-vehicle pile-up that involved a Nissan Sunny, a Powerstar heavy truck, and a Honda Fit.
The crash caused the Nissan Sunny to veer into the oncoming lane, where it collided head-on with the Powerstar truck.
Tragically, 53-year-old Andrew Makuwaza, a passenger in the Nissan Sunny, died at the scene.
Investigations revealed that Mauna had been driving negligently at excessive speed and failed to take action to prevent the collision.
In addition to his prison sentence, the court ordered the cancellation of Mauna’s driver’s licence for classes 2, 4, and 5, effectively barring him from operating both heavy and light motor vehicles.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) hailed the verdict as a clear message that reckless driving with fatal consequences will not be tolerated.
