A 26-year-old Harare man has been sentenced to 15 months in prison, banned from driving for two years and had his licence cancelled after being convicted of culpable homicide emanating from negligent driving.

Brendon Boilers Chando, of Cleveland Brookside in Harare, was sentenced by the Rusape Magistrates’ Court.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), on 20 September 2025 at around 2 PM, Chando was driving a Toyota Hiace carrying 14 passengers along the Harare-Mutare highway. At the 138km peg, he attempted to overtake and saw an oncoming vehicle.

In an attempt to avoid a head-on collision, he lost control of the vehicle, veered off the road and hit a ditch, causing the vehicle to land on its side. Two people died on the spot, while one other person sustained serious injuries.

Prosecutors proved that Chando was negligent. The State told the court that he was speeding, failed to stop or act reasonably when the accident or collision seemed imminent, and did not keep a proper lookout.

He was subsequently convicted of culpable homicide.

The court sentenced him to 15 months’ imprisonment, but he will serve an effective 10 months after five months were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour. In addition, he was prohibited from driving for two years, and his driver’s licence was cancelled.

The NPAZ warned drivers that there is zero tolerance towards reckless driving and the flouting of road regulations.

“The criminal justice system has a duty to protect all road users from reckless drivers and offenders will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” the Authority said.
