A 50-year-old man from Chief Bankwe’s area in Mberengwa has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after being convicted of raping his 90-year-old neighbour.
The Zvishavane Regional Magistrates’ Court handed down the sentence after finding him guilty of the brutal attack, which took place on 11 June 2025.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the elderly victim was asleep in her bedroom around 9 pm when the offender knocked on her door, pretending to be her grandson.
The complainant realised it was not her grandson through a small opening in the door and refused to open.
The man then forced his way inside, pushed the elderly woman to the ground, and raped her. The victim reportedly tried to scream for help, but her cries went unanswered.
The following morning, she confided in a neighbour, who accompanied her to file a police report. Investigations led to the offender’s arrest and subsequent conviction.
