Zimdancehall artist Ras Pompy found himself in hot water last week after getting caught with a stash of cough syrup bottles in his car.
The chanter, real name Nyasha Reginald Mano, was hauled before the Harare Magistrates Court, where he was remanded in custody pending a bail decision expected on Monday.
Ras Pompy is facing charges under the Medicines and Allied Substances Control Act after being found with 24 bottles of Broncleer, 20 of Benylin, and 55 bottles of Astra Pain cough syrup.
According to prosecutors, on the morning of July 16, detectives from CID Drugs Harare spotted a black Honda Fit, flagged in their system for drug-related activity, stuck in traffic along Kambuzuma Road.
When the cops signalled the vehicle to stop, Ras Pompy allegedly accelerated, weaving into the Rugare area in a bid to evade arrest.
His escape didn’t last long though after he reportedly crashed into a pole, giving the detectives time to catch up.
A quick search of his vehicle turned up nearly 100 bottles of the codeine-based syrup, with a street value of about US$396.
The car and drugs were seized, and Ras Pompy was taken to CID Drugs Harare.
