President Emmerson Mnangagwa gave a signal that he will be appointing outgoing Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) Commander Retired General Constantino Chiwenga as one of his Vice Presidents while speaking at a ceremony marking Chiwenga’s retirement on Tuesday.
Chiwenga also handed over the reigns to incoming ZDF Commander Philip Valerio Sibanda and urged him to jealously guard ZDF’s reputation. Speaking at the ceremony Mnangagwa praised Chiwenga for his loyalty and hinted that his next deployment will be prominet. Said Mnangagwa:
I therefore urge you to maintain the same loyalty, robustness and dedication to duty as you move to your next assignment which is quite prominent.
On Monday, Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Dr Misheck Sibanda announced that Chiwenga had retired pending redeployment. There is speculation Chiwenga will be appointed Vice President because of his role in Operation Restore Legacy which resulted in the resignation of Robert Mugabe and Mnangagwa’s elevation to the Presidency.
