The Roman Catholic Church and villagers in Chishawasha, Goromonzi district, are involved in a land dispute after the church announced plans to evict over 200 families from their ancestral communal land and convert it into a church-run urban settlement.
The villagers have taken the matter to court to seek an order to stop the evictions that will affect seven villages under Chief Chinamora. They want the Jesuit provincial superior of Zimbabwe, Fidelis Mukonori, to transfer the title deeds to them after conducting land surveys.
Mukonori is accused by the ZANU PF leadership of working with high-profile party members who are part of the Catholic Church to unlawfully evict the villagers and divide the land into residential plots for resale, <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200020039/land-grab-exposes-zanu-pf-factions">NewsDay</a> reported citing court papers.
The land dispute goes back to the 1890s when the Chishawasha clan, also known as VaShawasha, was forced off the land by white settlers. The land was given to the Catholic Church as a token of gratitude for their support of the Pioneer Column.
The dispute intensified during the time of former President Robert Mugabe when the Minister of Local Government, Ignatius Chombo, ordered the remaining villagers to leave their land. However, there was a faction within the ruling ZANU PF party who disagreed with this decision.
In a letter dated March 9, 2021, the ZANU PF leadership in Goromonzi district accused some government officials of supporting the Roman Catholic Church, causing them to lose political support in the area. Read the letter in part:

The proposed developments in Chishawasha have opened a can of worms and exposed high-profile people as you will find out.
Our Zanu PF party and the residents of Chishawasha need assistance from our leaders of the party since the urbanization issue wasn’t done in good faith.
The Jesuits formed a bogus Chishawasha Development Association as a divide-and-rule tactic, thereby offering a few rich selected residents with 99-year leases. The Zanu PF MP (Phineas Chiota) representing Chishawasha held a meeting with the Jesuits at Garnet House, thereby silencing the eviction issue facing residents around 2006. He instructed the Jesuits to leave the Vashawasha people with their land.

Some ZANU PF officials have accused Fidelis Mukonori of using his influence as a renowned priest and confidante of former President Robert Mugabe to pressure the government into facilitating a land grab. The party alleges that Mukonori colluded with the then Minister of Local Government, Ignatius Chombo, to promote the Greater Harare project, which involved the government and the Jesuits working together.
The ZANU PF leadership claims that Mukonori and Chombo held meetings with village heads, threatening them with arrests for allowing new settlers in Chishawasha. They also accused Mukonori of misleading residents into thinking that the urbanisation scheme was genuine, only for eviction papers to be given to other residents. The local ZANU PF leadership has called on President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government to intervene and halt the evictions. Goromonzi district, known for its proximity to Harare, has been targeted by land barons and politicians for housing schemes.

Roman Catholic Bishop Mukonori Accused Of Working With ZANU PF To Evict Villagers

Presidential spokesperson George Charamba has warned CCC spokesperson Promise Mkwananzi and his deputy Gift “Ostallos” Siziba against what he calls “casting aspersions” on Roman Catholic Church priest Father Fidelis Mukonori.
Mkwananzi and Siziba criticised Mukonori for suggesting that CCC leader Nelson Chamisa should concede defeat in the 23 August 2023 presidential race and talk to President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
In response, Charamba said the two should show respect to Mukonori as he is a seasoned negotiator, saying they (in apparent reference to the “System”) know Chamisa more than Mkwananzi and Siziba. Wrote Charamba on Twitter:

Anyone with some modicum of political understanding knows that good politics is founded on basic respect for the Church and its counselling and prophetic role in the affairs of our Nation.
To have little boys like the fugitive Mkwananzi and Ostallos casting aspersions on a cleric with the standing of Father Fidelis Mukonori, smacks of despicable pretentiousness and downright ignorance of our history and contemporary affairs.
Just a cursory reading of our Liberation Struggle would have cautioned these two impressionable and excitable youngsters against such gratuitous insults.
Father Mukonori’s role in our Liberation Struggle and in key peace initiatives before and after our Independence is a matter of public record.
These included missions to Liberation Movements at the height of our Struggle, well before these two youngsters were born.
It is that historical and historic role that earned him his brokering role during the 2017 Operation.
While these two youngsters, incited by their equally youngster leader may be forgiven for not living or reading history, they cannot be excused for miscomprehending times and events they lived through. Or for cheaply abusing them for political expediency.
However angry Father Mukonori’s advice may make them, Chamisa knows that, as before, he stands to rue his excitable response to poll defeat and, again as before, will spend the coming five long years desperately knocking on many doors for accommodation by the winner, Dr ED Mnangagwa! We happen to know a little more about him than ever does these two youngsters!

Chamisa has rejected the outcome of the presidential election and demanded fresh polls supervised by SADC.

Charamba Warns Mkwananzi And Siziba Against Vilifying Father Fidelis Mukonori

CCC has warned Roman Catholic priest Father Fidelis Mukonori that he risks losing the respect that he commanded over the years if he takes sides in political disputes in Zimbabwe.
Mukonori was quoted by a local daily publication as saying CCC leader Nelson Chamisa should concede defeat in the 23 August presidential election and seek dialogue with President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) declared Mnangagwa the winner with 52.6% of the total votes cast while Chamisa garnered 44%. However, Chamisa has rejected the results, calling the election a “gigantic fraud”.
Responding to Mukonori’s call for dialogue, CCC spokesperson Promise Mkwananzi said the opposition party is open to dialogue but not on the “winner versus loser” conditions outlined by Mukonori. 
Below is Mkwananzi’s full response to Mukonori’s cal for dialogue posted on X:

A Response to Father Mukonori’s Call for Dialogue.
Noting the statement from Father Mukonori, it is essential to put things into perspective before responding to his call.
While Father Mukonori, has for years been a respected Father figure of the church in Zimbabwe, his conspicuous role in the events that led to the deposing of President Robert Mugabe through a coup by Mr. Mnangagwa diminished his societal standing and the respect he once enjoyed.
His skewed statements in today’s Herald Newspaper further affirm the questions that Zimbabweans have about the relationship Father Mukonori has with the Mnangagwa regime.
Father Mukonori ought to extricate himself from this partisan position if he is to retain the respect that he commanded over the years. 
At the very least, the electoral sham of August 2023 did not pass the test for an election. In other words, the events of the 23rd &amp; 24th of August 2023 cannot be a basis for Father Mukonori to talk about “winners &amp; losers”.
This is the position commonly held by all observer Missions that observed the elections. In short, if ever there would be dialogue in Zimbabwe, it would not take place on the basis of a winner and a loser but on the basis of two of Zimbabwe’s political leaders namely President [Nelson Chamisa and [Emmerson Mnangagwa].
Their dialogue would need to take place outside the purview of the ill-fated &amp; illegal POLAD Framework-a feeding trough for fringe political “leaders” who only care about their stomachs &amp; the benefits extended to them by Mr. Mnangagwa to undermine the leading party in Zimbabwe: the [CCC].
Accordingly, a genuine bilateral framework for dialogue will need to be facilitated between the two political leaders.
In addition, the dialogue must include several other key Stakeholders such as the church, civil society, Business, women, youth, informal traders, etc.
The dialogue must be underwritten by [SADC] from the outset &amp; be confined to only one objective: To establish a Transitional Authority whose sole mandate would be to deal with all issues that hinder a free &amp; fair election in Zimbabwe such as the disbanding of ZEC, political &amp; media reforms etc &amp; the conduction of a fresh, free &amp; fair election within the shortest practicable time to save Zimbabwe &amp; indeed the region which may suffer the most from the spillover effects of Zimbabwe’s incessant electoral disputes.

CCC Responds To Father Mukonori's Call For Dialogue

CCC deputy spokesperson Gift “Ostallos” Siziba has said the party supports efforts by church leaders to help resolve political disputes in the country but clerics should get their facts straight.
This comes after Roman Catholic priest Father Fidelis Mukonori suggested that CCC leader Nelson Chamisa should concede defeat in the 23 August presidential race and seek dialogue with President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Posting on X this Tuesday, Siziba said it is not true that Chamisa lost the election, which the opposition party described as a sham and gigantic fraud. He said:

While the overtures of church leaders to try and resolve the political and constitutional crisis which intensified after the shambolic 23 August 2023 polls is welcome, it must be based on correct facts of the matter.
The election was a sham because the ZEC violated the Constitution, electoral law, and regional and international guidelines on conducting free, fair, credible, and verifiable polls.

Chamisa rejected the outcome of the 23 August presidential election after the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) declared Mnangagwa the winner with 52.6% of the votes.
The SADC Election Observer Mission (SEOM) on Zimbabwe’s 2023 Harmonised Elections and other foreign observers said that the polls did not meet regional and international benchmarks to be deemed free and fair.
CCC spokesperson, Promise Mkwananzi said, “Mukonori ought to extricate himself from this partisan position if he is to retain the respect which he commanded over the years.”
Political and Socio-Economic commentator Never Maswerasei warned Mukonori against “portraying” himself as “holier than thou” saying the Roman Catholic Church is full of scandals. He wrote on the social media site X:

I am born and bred a Catholic but he must NOT push us to start talking about sensitive things they do behind the veil in church. He is not the holier-than-thou saint that he wants to portray. Somebody close to him must urgently pass the message.
Pius Ncube would actually make a better saint than this guy but we don’t want to go there. Let him enjoy his share of Mnangagwa’s US$350 million election fund quietly. Don’t be fooled, they have children these ones.

He was referring to former Roman Catholic Church Archbishop Pius Alick Mvundla Ncube who resigned from his post on 11 September 2007 after his alleged sexual relationship with a married woman, Rosemary Sibanda, was exposed.

"Get Your Facts Straight", Ostallos Tells Church Leaders

Roman Catholic Church priest, Father Fidelis Mukonori, has implored President Emmerson Mnangagwa and CCC leader Nelson Chamisa to engage in one-on-one dialogue to unite the nation and move the country forward.
Chamisa rejected the outcome of the recent presidential election after the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) declared Mnangagwa the winner with 52.6% of the votes.
Speaking in an interview with a local media house, Mukonori said Chamisa should be “courageous” to concede defeat and engage Mnangagwa in dialogue rather than embark on street protests as it will lead to the killing of innocent people. <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/concede-defeat-seek-dialogue-chamisa-told/">The Herald</a> quoted Mukonori as saying:
<blockquote>
The one who says I am not satisfied and I believe the elections were not free and fair should also have the courage, it takes courage for someone to say let us sit down and discuss, it takes wisdom, courage is wisdom.
It is essential for the two to sit down and discuss. Discussions are more difficult than toy-toying on the streets and it will get people killed.
They (discussions) are more difficult because they require thinking and it is an exercise that has no textbook and thinking requires someone who has to know how to think.

In 2018, the military shot dead six people in central Harare when MDC Alliance supporters took to the streets in protest of what they considered ZEC’s delay in announcing the results of the presidential election.
Meanwhile, Mukonori stated that it is not too late for Mnangagwa and Chamisa to engage in meaningful dialogue. He said:

We need that humility. It is only a lawyer who is called an educated person but there has to be a display to say indeed we are learned and therefore let us sit down and discuss.
I believe it is necessary, it is not too late to request the two sides, the winner and loser to say please can you sit down and discuss. There is a need for serious discussion.

The SADC Election Observer Mission (SEOM) on Zimbabwe’s 2023 Harmonised Elections and other foreign observers said that the polls did not meet regional and international benchmarks to be deemed free and fair.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa last week said SADC Heads of State will debate the contents of the SEOM’s final report and also hear representations from Zimbabwe as well as the SEOM.

"His Ideas Would Be Very Helpful Today," Father Mukonori Bemoans Mugabe's Failure To Write

Father Fidelis Mukonori who was the spiritual adviser to the late founding leader of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, has said that he advised both Mugabe and former vice president, Joshua Nkomo to address the Gukurahundi massacres in the public. Mukonori was speaking to Blessed Mhlanga, a senior reporter at The Standard in an exclusive interview. Below are excerpts from the interview.
<blockquote>BM: Some would say he will be remembered more for his role in the Gukurahundi massacres, which were exposed by the Catholic Church? He never apologised for the killings. Do you think such things ever bothered him?
FM: The exposition was not a new thing to those who were fighting. The Patriotic Front was made of PF Zapu and Zanu PF, Zipra forces and Zanla forces.
If you remember the statement where he said “it was a moment of madness”, I don’t know what you want to call that whether it was an apology or not.
It’s an issue that I discussed with him in person and I discussed the same issue with his vice-president Joshua Nkomo.
It’s an issue, which some people in Zimbabwe would not be in a position to understand and the matrix pertaining to that issue.
People will not know what happened, why it happened.
One death is too many after 70 000 lives were lost in the liberation war. We did not need more bloodshed, not even a drop. I said to both of them, I believed it was essential for the two one day to address the people of Zimbabwe regarding the Gukurahundi issue.
BM: And that never happened.
FM: I left the two of them to discuss and come to an agreement to say should they do it, because I believe the two knew what happened and why it happened and what made that moment of madness to occur.</blockquote>

"I Asked Mugabe & Nkomo To Jointly & Publicly Address Gukurahundi" - Father Mukonori

Former president Robert Mugabe’s spiritual advisor, Father Fidelis Mukonori (FM) has said that everyone who participated in violence in the country will be answerable before God. Speaking in an exclusive interview with Blessed Mhlanga (BM), a senior reporter with The Standard, Mukonori who was Mugabe’s confidante since the days of the liberation struggle, said that Gukurahundi was not the only violence to have happened in Zimbabwe. He added that without holistically considering what really happened and why one would not understand those events. Below are excerpts from the interview.
BM: Do these things taint the legacy of the founding father of Zimbabwe?
FM: It taints the legacy of Zimbabwe, as well as you and I.
Maybe you were too young when it happened, but I am also tainted by what happened in the 80s and 70s before you were born.
There is no exclusionary in terms of violence and perpetration of violence and war.
There is no reason for looking into one side, Robert Mugabe had his responsibility. He has to answer and he will answer that before God.
So will any of his colleagues who went before him or will go after him who participated in the same onslaught of not only Gukurahundi but even the armed struggle, 70 000 people lost their lives in this country.

"Everyone Who Participated In Gukurahundi Will Be Answerable Before God," Mugabe Spiritual Adviser

On the morni1ng on 16 November, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/November_2017_Military_Takeover_in_Zimbabwe_(Timeline)">2 days after the military takeover in Zimbabwe</a>, it was revealed that a Catholic priest, Father Fidelis Mukonori, was mediating between Mugabe and the military generals. Few knew of this man before then.
Here are some things about him you may find interesting:
<h2>1. Role in Zimbabwe’s War Of Liberation</h2>
Fidelis Mukonori played a role in Zimbabwe’s liberation. As a youth coordinator at Silveira House (a Catholic training center just outside Harare high-density suburb of Tafara) Mukonori played a major part in the recruitment of young men and women to undergo military training in neighbouring countries to become fighters.  In 1979, he assisted in the Lancaster House Conference from the background. Then, he was still known as Brother Fidelis Mukonori.
 
<h2>2. Professional Mediator</h2>
Mukonori is not a mediator by sheer personality or chance. He studied conflict resolution. In addition to a Masters in Theology, he holds an Advanced Certificate in Conflict Resolution and has, in his career, attended several courses on Social Development, Philosophy, and Mediation.
 
<h2>3. Late 90s Mediation Between War Veterans and White Farmers</h2>
Mukonori is well known for having played a pivotal role in the country’s land reform programme that was kicked of by the land invasions by the War Veterans in late 90s. he intervened at the height of the clashes, in some cases fatal, between war veterans and white commercial farmers. He brokered a deal for peace on occupied farms. The two parties agreed to let the war veterans remain on the farms they had occupied until a programme for orderly resettlement had been worked out.
 
<h2>4. Survived kidnapping and robbery</h2>
In 2001 Mukonori was kidnapped by a gang of men who went on to rob him of his $300 000 vehicle and personal belongings.The gang dumped him near Mabvuku turn off and sped off.
His car was found in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Victoria_Falls" title="Victoria Falls">Victoria Falls</a> a month later.
 
<h2>5. 2003 Mediation between Zanu-PF and MDC talks</h2>
In 2003, Mukonori met with <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Morgan_Tsvangirai" title="Morgan Tsvangirai">Morgan Tsvangirai</a>,  with the state media referring to him as someone who had historically played Mugabe’s “emissary”. It was reported that the purpose of the meeting was for Mukonori to hear the MDC’s position and demands so that prior talks that had collapsed in 2002 would resume. The talks were centred on ending Zimbabwe’s political and economic crisis.
<h2>6. His Personal Background</h2>
Fidelis Mukonori was born in a family of 10 in 1947 in Chiweshe Communal Area. His family moved to Chihota where he started his primary education, which he continued at Chishawasha Mission and later completed at Mazowe Jesuit House.
 
<h2>7. Baptising Notorious Criminal, Stephen Chidhumo</h2>
In October 1997, Mukonori baptised a notorious criminal, Stephen Chidhumo, who’d been arrested. He baptised him at Parirenyatwa Hospital where he was being treated for gunshot wounds he got when he was finally arrested after some time of reigning terror as a fugitive. Stephen Chidhumo was renamed Fidelis Chidhumo. Chidhumo was sentenced to death and was executed later.

5 Interesting Things About The Priest Who Negotiated Mugabe's Ouster

Father Fidelis Mukonori who facilitated negotiations between former President Robert Mugabe and the Constantino Chiwenga-led military during Operation Restore Legacy, revealed how he trained the late MDC-T leader, Morgan Tsvangirai on peace-building.
Mukonori said this during a Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) and Silveira House workshop on creating the environment for effective coverage of the forthcoming elections, where he revealed Tsvangirai passed through the Catholic Social Justice and Development Centre outside Harare. Said Mukonori:
<blockquote>Many of the leading labour movement leaders, teachers and those of professional reputation passed through our hands at the centre in our efforts for peace-building. Among those that I trained are the late MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai as well as the late former Zambian President Frederick Chiluba, who wanted to use his muscle due to his short build, but we told him to think to achieve anything on peace. We know workers were not being handsomely paid, but the only way was through good negotiating skills.</blockquote>

Mugabe's Mediator Says He Taught Tsvangirai Peacebuilding

George Charamba, spokesperson for President Emmerson Mnangagwa and former spokesperson to former president Robert Mugabe has narrated Mugabe’s last days in power. According to Charamba, Mugabe was a given a “chilling warning” by the command element of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) that the populace and the students were baying for his blood and wanted to storm his “Blue Roof” residence. The ZDF said that it would not turn its guns on civilians and warned that Mugabe could face the same fate as Libya’s former ruler, Muammar Gaddafi. Gaddafi was captured and killed in 2011 after rival forces found him hiding in a drainage pipe.  Speaking to the Daily News, Charamba said:
<blockquote>During the negotiations, we were shuttling between Josiah Magamba Tongogara (former KGVI) barracks and the Blue Roof (Mugabe’s residence). We were summoned to Josiah Magamba Tongogara to meet the command element of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, this was myself, (Catholic priest) Father Mukonori and Aaron Nhepera, who was the deputy director-general of the CIO (Central Intelligence Organisation). And we were given an appraisal of the situation.
They gave us the scenarios that were at play, which were that the povoand also students were threatening to go to the Blue Roof and that there was a possibility of harm to the president. The second was the party had instituted impeachment procedures which were going to take him from being a liberation icon to a common criminal.
The commanders sent us with a very chilling message, they said ‘please go and get the president to appreciate the gravity of the situation out there.’ There was the possibility of a Libyan scenario where the president would have been dragged out of the Blue Roof and lynched. It was going to be possible because the soldiers said ‘we cannot turn our guns on civilians who are marching against the president and spill blood.’ I started visualising an image of Muammar Gaddafi, I literally went argh argh!
The second scenario of impeachment, they said ‘if the impeachment starts, we cannot stop it because that would be to start a coup d’état.’
The third message was to say ‘we are fast losing control of the process.’ The process was to have Mugabe restored as substantive leader of this country and then decide on his own to say I am tired I am handing over power. But there were those processes that were taking place and if they would have happened, there was no longer any legacy to restore.</blockquote>

Mugabe Was Warned That He Risked Dying Like Gaddafi: Charamba Narrates Mugabe’s Last Days

Roman Catholic Priest, Father Fidelis Mukonori, the man who mediated in the talks between former president Robert Mugabe and Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) after the military seized power has warned that former first lady Grace Mugabe will face justice when her husband passes on. Mugabe agreed to step down on the 21st of November, but only after getting a deal for immunity from prosecution for his family for any crimes committed during his 37 years as head of state. Mugabe was also given guarantees of security for his family’s many business interests.
In an interview with a Catholic magazine, Father Mukonori said that people would do justice to Grace after Mugabe dies. An excerpt from the American Jesuit Review magazine reads:
<blockquote>“When asked about her future after her husband dies, (Fr Mukonori) says calmly, ‘I’m sure that people would do justice to her’,”
“He speaks fondly about Mr Mugabe’s first wife, Sally, but his demeanour changes when he speaks about Grace,”
“One cannot but help feel that Father Mukonori attributes Grace Mugabe’s greed for power as a serious contributing factor to her husband’s political demise”.</blockquote>
Grace is yet to make a public appearance since her husband was ousted from power and replaced as president by the man she had attacked with a lot of vitriol, Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Grace Will Face Justice When Robert Mugabe Dies Warns Father Mukonori

Father Fidelis Mukonori, the Roman Catholic priest, who mediated in the negotiations between the Zimbabwe Defence Forces Generals and former President Robert Mugabe, has said that former first lady Grace Mugabe took part in some of the meetings. The negotiations ultimately resulted in the resignation of Mugabe after 37 years as Head of State.
In an interview with the Voice of America, Mukonori revealed that Grace had participated in some of the negotiations and addressed some of the concerns raised by the generals. Said Mukonori
<blockquote>She came in when she had to.
But she was not the major focus. We were zeroing in on the commander-in-chief of the Zimbabwe Defense Forces, and the Head of State and government and first secretary of Zanu-PF, President Robert Mugabe. For us, that was the centre of focus. We didn’t want to lose focus.</blockquote>
Father Mukonori also said that as far as the generals were concerned, former President Mugabe was responsible for Grace’s behaviour as she answered to him.
<blockquote>The first lady was the secretary for Women’s Affairs and that in my view was part and parcel of the responsibility of the president. So we did not have to deal with that issue.</blockquote>
Grace is said to have denied allegations that she was behind a plot to arrest or eliminate General Constantino Chiwenga.  <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2017/11/17/zrp-support-unit-attempted-to-arrest-general-chiwenga-when-he-returned-from-china/">The plot to arrest Chiwenga failed after Military Intelligence learned of it in advance and were able to thwart it.</a>
Father Mukonori went on to reveal that Grace had categorically denied the allegation that either she or members of her office had authored the statement which was read by, then Zanu-PF Youth League Secretary Kudzanai Chipanga on 14 November 2017. In the statement, <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2017/11/14/dont-hide-behind-barrel-gun-zanu-pf-youth-league-tells-general-chiwenga/">the youths allegedly denigrated the Zimbabwe Defence Forces and told General Chiwenga not to hide behind the barrel of a gun claiming that as youths they were prepared to die for Mugabe</a>. Chipanga later retracted the statement and publicly apologised for reading it, saying that it had been given to him by <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2017/11/16/who-is-rodney-dangarembizi-the-man-chipanga-threw-under-the-bus/">Rodney Dangarembizi, a known close associate of the former first lady.</a>
Chipanga is currently in remand prison awaiting trial for reading out the statement. He is facing charges of publishing or communicating false statements prejudicial to the State or alternatively causing disaffection among the police force or defence forces.

Grace Mugabe Participated In Negotiations With Military Generals Says Father Fidelis Mukonori

Roman Catholic Priest, Father Fidelis Mukonori who was one of the mediators between former President Robert Mugabe and the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) has revealed how he managed to convince Mugabe to step down:
In an interview, Father Fidelis Mukonori said that part of his strategy was to avoid arguing with Mugabe, but to try to convince him gradually. Said Mukonori
<blockquote>He (Mugabe) is a debater, he is a thinker, he argues intelligently, he can philosophise.
It was a question of making President Mugabe see what was happening in the country economically and politically at that time and what was at stake with regard to issues pertaining to the soldiers moving in.
Listening of a 93-year-old is not the same as listening of a 23-year-old or a 17-year-old</blockquote>
Mukonori also revealed that the solidarity marches held on Saturday the 18th of November moved Mugabe when he realised how many people had marched against him. said Mukonori:
<blockquote>It moved him. It moved him in this sense that he realised that they are speaking to say this is enough.</blockquote>
Robert Mugabe eventually resigned on Tuesday after the Senate and House of Assembly were in a joint sitting to impeach him.

Former President Robert Mugabe is reported to have shed some tears when he resigned on Tuesday, while both the Upper and Lower Houses of Parliament, where sitting to impeach him. Mugabe is reported to have felt bitter and betrayed by his subordinates some of whom he claimed he had groomed and protected from charges of corruption from as far back as 1983.
According to weekly publication, The Standard, Mugabe had initially insisted that he was not going to step down as he was prepared to die for his seat and only resigned when he realised how untenable his situation was, although he felt bitter at the perceived betrayal.
Some sources who spoke to The Standard said:
<blockquote>After a four-hour long meeting, which was attended by the chief negotiator, Father Fidelis Mukonori, family friend and former Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor Gideon Gono, presidential spokesperson George Charamba and the (former) first lady Grace Mugabe, Mugabe was adamant that he would not step down
He was prepared to die for his seat. He looked down, looked at his wife, took a deep breath and said ‘so this is what they have decided.
He looked down and said ‘people were chameleons, (name of the senior Zanu PF official withheld) of all the people to do this to me.
Is this the same person I recently gave a lifeline and I pardoned him since 1983? Today he turns against me.
It was a heart-rending moment, especially for Mukonori who could not hold back his tears.
He said ‘well, they have done this, I hope it ends with me</blockquote>

Mugabe's Last Days:  Another Account Says Mugabe Felt  Betrayed By People He Had "Protected"

A Catholic Priest is reported to be mediating between President Robert Mugabe and the generals from the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) to ensure that Mugabe gets a political exit.  The ZDF seized power in the early hours of Wednesday and has insisted that this is not a military coup.  The ZDF in a report said that it only wanted to arrest the criminals who were around President Mugabe who had caused suffering to the Zimbabwean people.
Reuters reports that Mugabe is refusing to go insisting that he can only be removed by the Zanu-PF party leadership through a vote. Reuters claims to have received this information from political and intelligence sources.  Pindula has now confirmed that the Catholic priest in question is Father Fidelis Mukonori.
Mugabe is insisting that the action taken by the military is illegal and that he is still the legitimate head of state. He wants the Zimbabwe defence Forces to admit that what they did was illegal.  Mugabe and  his advisors are reported to be insisting that the president should finish his term
A source who spoke to Reuters said:
<blockquote>It’s a sort of stand-off, a stalemate. They are insisting the president must finish his term.</blockquote>
The generals, on the other hand, wants former Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa to be reinstated to his previous positions of Vice President of Zimbabwe and Second Secretary of Zanu-PF.
The negotiations are being held at the State House after the generals refused to meet Mugabe at his “Blue Roof” home as it is not his official residence.
