The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) at Midlands State University (MSU) has declared this Wednesday a Day of Mourning in honour of Lesedi Nkomo.

Nkomo, 25, was a Level 4.1 Psychology Honours student in the Faculty of Social Sciences. She was shot dead at a boarding house in Senga, Gweru, on Thursday, 8 October 2026.

Police say she was allegedly shot once in the forehead during a dispute with her ex-husband, Godknows Muleya, aged 30. The incident happened at around 5.30pm at the KMP boarding house, House Number 1082, Senga KMP in Gweru.

In a statement, the SRC described Nkomo as a vibrant student whose young life was tragically and violently cut short in a senseless act of violence.

“On behalf of her direct classmates, the entire student body of the Faculty of Social Sciences, and the Midlands State University fraternity at large, the SRC extends its deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the Nkomo family,” the statement reads.

“We share in your immense grief during this excruciatingly painful hour. Words fall short in comforting a family that has lost a cherished daughter, but we pray that you find strength, peace, and solace in knowing that Lesedi was deeply loved, respected, and valued by her peers and the entire university community.”

The SRC said Nkomo’s death is a profound loss that echoes across all campuses and that the university will lay her to rest on Wednesday.

“As we prepare to lay her to rest on Wednesday, the SRC officially declares Wednesday a Day of Mourning across all Midlands State University campuses, themed ‘Black Wednesday’. We humbly call upon all students, student leaders, and members of the university community to dress in black attire on this day as a collective symbol of grief, solidarity, and honour for a life ended far too soon.”
