The Midlands State University (MSU) National Pathology Research and Diagnostic Centre (NPRDC) is investigating an incident at Jameson High School in Kadoma in which learners and teachers were hospitalised after experiencing breathing difficulties.
The <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/msu-probes-kadoma-school-gas-incident/">Chronicle</a> reported that 53 learners and members of staff at the school were hospitalised after inhaling an unknown substance.
Residents of nearby suburbs said they smelt the strong stench from the emissions whose composition and origin are still being investigated.
MSU director of marketing and communications, Mirirai Mawere said:

We would like to inform you that our pathology scientists have gone to Kadoma to do some tests for the investigation of the fainting incident at Jameson High School.
We have taken one of our equipment; the arterial blood analyser which needs testing of fresh blood immediately after collection. It tests for blood gases.
Kadoma City Council is doing the investigations and there was no lab offering these tests at all, especially the blood gases.
We are excited that we are making an impact in the country.

She said the NPRDC scientists were also doing tests for kidney function, liver profile, and full blood count.
Mashonaland West provincial medical director, Dr. Celestino Dhege said following the incident, some learners were quickly put on oxygen “as they were showing difficulties in breathing and asthmatic attacks”.

MSU Scientists Investigate Jameson High School Health Scare

A 23-year-old man got capped at the Midlands State University on Friday by President Emmerson Mnangagwa on behalf of his mother who died in September this year.
Brian Banda’s mother, Patricia Banda, was graduating posthumously with a first-class degree in Bachelor of Commerce Information Systems Management.
MSU Chaplain Reverend Menson Mpofu requested for a moment of silence to remember Banda. He said:

Let us take a minute of silence as we observe one of our own, Mrs Patricia Banda, who died on September 2. She was supposed to graduate with others today. May her soul rest in peace.
</blockquote>
When his mother’s name was called for capping by President Mnangagwa, Brian walked to the podium with his mother’s gown and cap in hand and was capped on his late mother’s behalf.
In an interview with State media later, Brian said the day was an emotional one for the family. He said:

I am still in pain. It could have been my mum’s big day today, celebrating with others the fruits of her hard work but God had other plans, she is no more and I am here standing in for her.
I left my father (Simbarashe Banda) and the other family members at home. Dad actually said he can’t be here because of emotions but I decided to come and stand in for my mother.

Brian is a university student who is pursuing an Accounting degree at Great Zimbabwe University.
He vowed to continue with his studies until he attains a professorship as a tribute to his mother.
Brian said his mother died following a short illness at the age of 38.

Midlands State University (MSU) has banned individuals and private organisations from holding side graduation events after it barred at least 5 200 of its 6 500 students from physically attending their graduation ceremony last week.
MSU said the move was aimed at ensuring compliance with COVID-19 regulations.
Since 2020, universities have been holding virtual graduations, only allowing those with first-class degrees to physically attend the ceremonies.
This has resulted in some students holding private ceremonies where they could gather and follow virtual live proceedings.
Last week MSU distanced itself from such gatherings and warned stakeholders that they will not be responsible for anything. It said in a notice:

Should one decide to attend such events, Midlands State University will not assume responsibility or be held liable for the consequences of such a decision.
</blockquote>
Opposition LEAD leader Linda Masarira criticised the move by MSU and described it as disrespectful. She said:

This kind of disrespect is totally unacceptable. MSU has by this issue shown disrespect to their stakeholders and we demand answers with transparency because this raises eyebrows on the day-to-day usage of funds.
Why rob more than a thousand students of an opportunity to celebrate their degrees that they spent four years paying school fees for just like any other state university?
We demand answers and legit reasons or at least for graduation fees to be lowered about the fact that only a few students will be attending the graduation physically.
MSU should stop this daylight robbery and allow students to attend the graduation physically.

MSU Bans Students From Holding Side Graduation Events

The Midlands State University (MSU) has pushed forward the registration deadline to 3 August.
In a notice to students dated 16 July 2021, MSU Deputy Registrar, Academic Affairs, Dr Kudzaishe Mudzingwa, said students who fail to register on time will not be allowed to write the end of semester examinations. The notice read:
<blockquote>All students are advised that the registration period has been extended to Tuesday, 3 August 2021.
Registration is a pre-condition for attendance of face-to-face tuition and online learning in the Google Classroom.
Students who do not register in time to attend lectures and do coursework will be assumed to have deferred their studies and will not be allowed to write the end of semester examinations.
Students on Work-Related Learning are advised to register before the registration deadline.</blockquote>
Last month MSU was forced to suspend face to face lectures after scores of students at the Gweru Main Campus and Zvishavane Campus tested positive to COVID-19.

Midlands State University would like to advise all students that examination results for the first Semester ending 30 June 2019 are now out. Students whose tuition is paid in full can now access their results on their e-learning accounts.
The University would like to urge the graduating class to urgently pay their graduation fees in order to participate in the graduation ceremony scheduled for the 12th of July 2019.
The graduation fee is RTGS $300 for both Undergraduate and Masters graduands. The fee is inclusive of academic regalia ($150), participation fee ($125) and alumni fee (25).

Lecturers at Midlands State University said that they are now incapacitated and can no longer report for duty as the RTGS4 continues to lose value.
In a letter dated 18 June 2019 and addressed to the Vice Chancellor, the lecturers wrote:

Lecturers’ salaries have drastically fallen to the equivalent of around US$200 per month given that the RTGS$ continues to lose value against other currencies. This salary now fails to take any family person for a week, hence we wish to notify you that we are now incapacitated.
In this regard, we will also try our best to have finished marking of exams by the 30th of June 2019.</blockquote>

The Midlands State University Language Institute has been commissioned at the main Campus in Gweru amid excitement that significant strides have been made in the country by successfully coordinating the translation of the National Constitution into all fifteen (15) local languages including Sign Language.
The Institute has also established partnerships with the Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs; the Parliament of Zimbabwe; The Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops Conference; The Zimbabwe Gender Commission and Ministry of Health and Child Care.
Midlands State University Language Institute Acting Director, Professor Wiseman Magwa revealed this at the Commissioning of the Institute on Monday, the 6th of May 2019, saying Sign Language training to all nurses, doctors and police officers in the Midlands Province will be rolled out soon to ease challenges of communicating with people living who suffer visual or hearing impairment in public institutions.
” Locally here at the Midlands State University, the Language Institute has successfully translated the University Code of Conduct and Grievances Procedure into Shona, Ndebele and Braille. Furthermore, we have also brailed important health information for the benefit of the visually impaired members of the University community,” he said.
The Vice-Chancellor Professor Victor Muzvidziwa who was Guest of Honour at the event, applauded the establishment of the Institute saying it will provide the country with a rare opportunity to rebuild the nation based on the possibilities of using its languages and cultures fully.
“The idea is to use the Institute to enhance the accessibility of all vital information to its people through the translation of all key government information. Already, the Constitution has been translated into all other fifteen (15) languages, something that clearly enhances constitutionalism in Zimbabwe.
Similar work could be undertaken by this Institute to produce teaching and learning materials in indigenous languages for all levels of education as a way of fulfilling Zimbabwe’s Language-in-Education Policy,” he said.
The Institute offers various services which include thesis and dissertation language editing, translation, document proofreading, sign language interpretation, brailing and transcription as well as the teaching of marginalised languages such as Tonga, Nambya, Sotho, Kalanga for degree purposes.</blockquote>

A Midlands State University Lecturer has been granted £300 000 by the African Academy of Sciences and Royal Society.
The award was granted to Dr Gift Mehlana, the chairperson of Midlands State University’s Chemical Technology Department to conduct independent research that will find solutions to global challenges affecting Zimbabwe.
Dr Mehlana was presented with the award at Naivasha in Kenya where scientists from across the African continent gathered from April 4 to 5 to celebrate the start of their two-year Future Leaders-African Independent Research (FLAIR) fellowship.
Speaking to The Herald after bagging the grant, Dr Mehlana had this to say:
<blockquote>This gesture comes at a good time when our nation is employing robust measures to revive the economy through industrialisation where science and research are key. Research is key to the economic development of Zimbabwe.
Therefore Zimbabwe is going to benefit from the sophisticated equipment that will allow us to carry out research which in turn will address some of the challenges that we are facing as a nation.
… The grant will give me an opportunity to network with researchers from the United Kingdom and in our region, I am looking forward to the prospects of carrying out research on carbon dioxide capture and conversion.</blockquote>

Zim Scientist Bags £300 000 Grant

Gweru City Council director of health services Samson Sekenhamo has said Midlands State University (MSU) students are at risk of catching tuberculosis (TB).
He said this is a result of the institution’s  inability to provide accommodation for all students has resulted in the unfortunate students seeking off campus accommodation. Speaking during a preparatory meeting for the belated World TB Day to be held at MSU campus on March 29, Mr Sekenhamo said the overcrowding of students had a high likelihood of increasing the risk of spreading of TB among students. Said Sekenhamho:
<blockquote>Midlands State University has student population of about 20 000 students of which the greater proportion of them reside in Senga, Nehosho, KMP and Adelaide Park areas, thereby increasing the risk of spread of TB due to overcrowding and occupation population density coupled with poor ventilation in most of the dwellings,</blockquote>
Sekenhamo said most students at MSU were defaulting TB treatment due to stigmatisation and this has increased cases of multi-drug resistant TB cases.

MSU Students At Risk Of Contracting TB

The Herald reports Midlands State University (MSU) off-campus students are now being charged monthly rentals in United States dollars by landlords in Senga and Nehosho suburbs in Gweru.
A survey by this publication showed that new accommodation prices now range from US$35 to US$75 per room when sharing. Previously, the students were paying $75 in bond notes or Ecocash per head. A parent Mrs Sharon Ndlovu from Bulawayo confirmed her child who is doing first year at MSU was asked to pay in US dollars.
MSU director of public relations Mrs Mirirai Mawere told The Herald they were aware accommodation was now expensive. She said as a measure to cushion parents, MSU had come up with a database of landlords who charge reasonable prices.

Landlords Demand Rent In US Dollars From MSU Students

Midlands State University (MSU) students due to write supplementary examinations next year as second attempts will have to pay $10 per module.
In a statement, MSU said only students writing for the first time and special examinations would not pay the $10. The statement reads:
<blockquote>Please be advised that supplementary and special examinations will be written from January 15 to 18, 2018. Candidates are required to bring the following items to the examination venue; student ID (identification), result slip and $10 receipt per module. For those writing as first attempt or special examinations, please bring your result slip and student ID only.</blockquote>

MSU Students To Pay More To Write Supplementary Exams

In a press statement, Midlands State University (MSU) dismissed reports that it received a dissertation with a title “An analysis of Facebook debates on Zodwa Wabantu’s ban from Zimbabwe’s Harare Festival” that is circulating on the social media.
In the statement MSU said that students are still working on their dissertations which are yet to be submitted. The statement reads:
<blockquote>It has come to the attention of the University that a dissertation cover page with the title “An analysis of Facebook debates on Zodwa wa Bantu’s ban from Zimbabwe’s Harare Festival” that is purported to be a cover page of a dissertation submitted to MSU, is circulating on social media and this has led to unfortunate and misinformed speculations about the institution, staff and students.
The impression that has been created on social media, as a result of the viral image, is that the University has received a document with   the said cover page or it has already been examined. While we acknowledge the amount of interest this viral image has created, we wish to bring to the attention of our publics a few points that may assist in framing the discussions.
Students are still working towards the submission of their dissertations for examination. All successfully completed dissertations — those which would have passed the test of rigour and quality — are submitted to the University and can be accessed from our institutional repository via the University library. Because dissertations are examination documents, the University does not distribute or share them, wholly or in part, with the public through non-official platforms.
Students work on their dissertations for a minimum period of two semesters although the actual writing takes place in their final semester when they register for the dissertation module.
The University upholds the spirit of creativity, ingenuity and academic freedom, for both students and staff, as long as these meet set conditions for quality and rigour. We have a tested system of checks and balances to achieve these goals. Therefore, a research on any topic or theme will still be tested for these conditions.</blockquote>

MSU speaks on Zodwa Wabantu dissertation circulating on social media

Midlands State University (MSU)’s public relations director Mrs Mirirai Mawere told The Chronicle that they are 95% done with constructing a 1700 sitter chapel that has so far cost approximately $1.1 million.
Said Mawere:
<blockquote>The chapel is not yet complete, only left with final touches. We are working on completing the roofing, furnishing and painting. There is still some work to be done before commissioning it. We will be using the chapel to conduct church services such as beginning and closing of the semester services, mid-week and memorial services for all university faith-based functions such as gospel concerts, conferences, Christian union functions. It can also be hired out to faith-based organisations for their national conferences.</blockquote>
A source within MSU’s Accounts Department told The Chronicle that the institution has so far spent $1,1 million from its coffers for the construction of the chapel and will require an additional $100 000 for its completion.

The Midlands State University (MSU) has complained that negative media reports that claimed a high HIV prevalence rate as well as numerous leaked pornographic videos on social media, have led to abuse of its students. MSU dean of students Reginald Nyango said:
<blockquote>After those articles, we had organisations such as New Start Centre who started coming here.
They have had to stop because they are not getting the numbers they want,
The problems reported as MSU’s are problems faced by young people everywhere.
Let’s be fair; children grow up in a community not a university. Any way, we only have these students 15 weeks from the 52 weeks in a year.”
When the media isolates them, it demoralises these students, makes them susceptible to abuse even when they seek employment.
We have a student who was raped recently and the perpetrator told her she deserved it because she is from MSU.</blockquote>
National Aids Council District Aids Coordinator for Gweru, Murari Hwingwiri added:

MSU complains that negative media reports are leading to unjustified abuse of its students

Midlands State University has intensified security at its campuses following an attack on students near Senga Training Centre outside the MSU main campus by soldiers on the evening of March 25.|
 
 
Army spokesperson Colonel Alphios Makotore however, distanced soldiers from the attack and blamed illegal gold panners in Gweru whom he claimed posed as army personnel. MSU vice chancellor, Victor Muzvidziwa said the security of students was a priority at the higher learning institution. In a statement on Sunday Muzvidziwa said:
<blockquote>Midlands State University administration denounces the attack and wishes to reassure its valued students that their security and safety is a top priority. Consequently, the institution has begun intensifying security around its campuses with more security personnel being deployed to increase the number of patrols and complement the CCTV cameras that were installed.</blockquote>
Muzvidziwa said the university will do everything possible to make sure that the assailants are brought to book.

MSU intensifies security after students were beaten by soldiers over woman

On Saturday, a group of men suspected to be soldiers assaulted 13 Midlands State University (MSU) students at Senga Training Centre near the university’s main campus. The suspected soldiers and the students were fighting over a woman believed to be a prostitute at a local night spot.
The incident occurred at 8PM when a group of people claiming to be soldiers pounced on the students who were drinking beer in a canteen and started assaulting them at random with snooker cues. Sources who spoke to The Chronicle said that a student had earlier had a confrontation with a soldier at the Bowling Club over a woman before the students allegedly teamed up to assault the “soldier” before fleeing the scene.
MSU Director of Information and Public Relations Mrs Mirirai Mawere confirmed the incident and said the matter has been reported at Senga Police Station. Zimbabwe Military Academy (ZMA) Chief Instructor Lieutenant Colonel Phillip Marangisi said that none of his students were reported missing at the time the incident is said to have occurred after they carried a head count after receiving information that soldiers had assaulted MSU students. He said that they are willing to assist the police to arrest the people who are tarnishing the image of the ZMA.

"Soldiers" beat 13 MSU students over woman

In a notice by the State institution’s registrar Midlands State University (MSU) students who fail to register over non-payment of fees or are not on a payment plan approved by the institution will not be allowed to attend lessons or sit for examinations.
Initial and late registration ends on March 31 and April 28, with students on a payment plan expected to produce printed and stamped online payment plans in class. Part of the notice reads:
<blockquote>All students, new and returning are advised that in order to attend lectures, students must have either paid fees and registered or be on an approved payment plan. Please note that no student shall be allowed to sit for the May — June 2017 examinations without complying with the above. Make haste to regularise your status as it will be virtually impossible for you to write examinations before fulfilling the following; evidence of class attendance and evidence of continuous assessment.</blockquote>

A <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Midlands_State_University">Midlands State University</a> students group known as the Cautious Generation is recording a  seven track album focused on sexual reproductive health issues with award winning producer <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Oskid">Oskid</a>.
MSU acting director of health services, Tafirenyika Shoko said Cautious Generation were also in the process of shooting a movie on the same subject as well as record videos for the seven songs.  Speaking to The Chronicle Shoko said:
<blockquote>As an institution, we’re happy that we managed to have Oskid on board as he’s one of the country’s top music producers. The idea of this project is to package sexual reproductive health information in a way which young people can relate to so they make informed decisions. Ideally, we hope to launch the CD at the end of January or early February next year. We’ll invite prominent musicians to perform in order to make the event more interesting.</blockquote>

Oskid produces MSU's HIV/AIDS awareness album

<a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Webster_Shamu">Webster Shamu</a>, was, last Friday, among students who were defending their thesis at <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Midlands_State_University">Midlands State University</a> for a masters’ degree in marketing. The former Zanu PF political commissar and MP for Chegutu East enrolled for the course last year.
On Friday, he could be seen busy with other post graduate students as he waited to appear before a panel of examining committee to defend his research project. Should he be successful in his studies, Shamu expects to be capped by <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Robert_Mugabe">Mugabe</a> before the end of this year.
Although he could not be reached for comment on Friday, last year Shamu told Newzimbabwe.com to leave him alone asking if he was “not allowed to live a private life” in pursuing academic studies.
He is serving a three year suspension from <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_African_National_Union_-_Patriotic_Front">Zanu PF</a> for his alleged link to <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Joice_Mujuru">Mujuru</a>. Shamu is also a businessman with interests in various sectors of the economy including fuel, transport and retail, among others.
