Parliament has received a petition from the Drivers’ Association of Zimbabwe (DAZ) calling for the driving profession to be formalised, including minimum educational qualifications and the creation of a legally recognised professional body.
The petitioners want a law that will make five O-Level passes, including English and Mathematics, mandatory for obtaining a professional driving licence in Zimbabwe.
The petition has been referred to the Portfolio Committee on Transport and Infrastructural Development for consideration.
DAZ argues that professionalising the sector will improve accountability and standards in Zimbabwe’s transport sector, which has faced growing calls for reform.
Under the proposal, a statutory professional body would set minimum entry-level educational requirements for drivers, adding academic criteria to the existing licensing process.
The committee is now expected to consider the proposal and make recommendations on whether to proceed with legislation.
The call comes as road carnage has become a major concern, with most accidents blamed on human error.
At present, obtaining a driver’s licence in Zimbabwe does not require any specific educational qualifications beyond passing the driving test.
