A 34-year-old man from Khame, Bulilima District in Matabeleland South, who killed his wife with a hammer and a pick handle after accusing her of trying to poison his porridge, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.
Honest Nkomo, of Khame area in Bulilima District, was convicted of murder by Justice Ngoni Nduna at the Bulawayo High Court.
The conviction and sentence stem from a violent domestic incident that occurred on 16 July 2024, in which his 27-year-old wife, Milikani Moyo, died at the scene.
The State, led by prosecutor Wisdom Shava, proved that Nkomo returned home and allegedly found Moyo sprinkling an unidentified powder into a plate of porridge she had prepared for him.
A heated argument broke out after he ordered her to eat the porridge first to prove it was safe, a demand she refused.
The court heard that the dispute quickly turned violent when Nkomo picked up a hammer and struck Moyo on the head. He then used a pick handle to inflict further blows, causing fatal head injuries.
After the attack, Nkomo left the scene and went to a nearby homestead to inform his aunt about the killing. The matter was reported to Madlambudzi Police Station, leading to his arrest.
During the trial, the State produced the blood-stained hammer and pick handle as exhibits, along with a post-mortem report by forensic pathologist Dr Sanganai Pesanai, which confirmed that Moyo died from severe head injuries.
The prosecution also called several witnesses, including local villagers Zakhe Sibanda, Fanton Ndebele, Lethiwe Ncube, Rebecca Mpofu and Sipho Ndlovu, as well as investigating officer Sergeant Brian Kombore.
