Wicknell Chivayo has pledged US$250,000 and a host of equipment to the John Landa Nkomo Trust to mark what would have been the birthday of the late former Vice President Dr John Landa Nkomo.

In a social media post on Saturday, 22 August, Chivayo described Nkomo as a “giant of our liberation struggle, a distinguished statesman and a true patriot” whose contribution to the country can never be erased.

“Today, as we commemorate the birthday of my beloved Sekuru, the late former Vice President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Dr John Landa Nkomo, we remember a giant of our liberation struggle, a distinguished statesman and a true patriot whose contribution to Zimbabwe can never be erased from our history,” Chivayo wrote.

He said Nkomo belonged to a generation that sacrificed enormously for independence and later dedicated his life to public service, national unity, reconciliation and peace.

Chivayo quoted Nkomo’s well-known message: “Peace begins with me, peace begins with you, peace begins with all of us,” saying it reflected his commitment to peace and unity as foundations for development.

To mark the occasion, Chivayo announced a US$250,000 donation to the John Landa Nkomo Trust towards further development at the John Landa Nkomo School.

He also pledged a brand-new single-cab pick-up for the school headmaster and a Toyota Coaster bus, which will complement a 76-seater bus he donated last year.

In addition, he said he would donate 100 desktop computers, 50 laptops and 50 printers for a new state-of-the-art computer laboratory at the school.

“Our children must be equipped with modern technology and given every opportunity to compete in an increasingly digital world,” he said.

Chivayo also paid tribute to the chairman of the Trust, Jabulani Nkomo, praising his leadership in preserving the late Vice President’s legacy.

As a token of appreciation, he said he would give Jabulani Nkomo US$50,000 “for his pocket” and US$20,000 to his wife Busi “to get her hair and nails done freely without stressing the chairman.”

“Leadership, loyalty and dedication deserve to be acknowledged and appreciated,” he said.
