Iran’s military has warned it will close the Strait of Hormuz in response to the United States maintaining its naval blockade.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Saturday that control of the strategic waterway has “returned to its previous state”, due to the continued restriction of Iranian ports by US forces.
Earlier on Friday, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the Strait would be “completely open” to commercial shipping for the duration of a ceasefire.
US President Donald Trump then said the blockade of Iranian ports by US forces will “remain in full force” until what he described as a “transaction with Iran” is fully concluded.
In response, the IRGC’s naval command declared on Saturday that the Strait has reverted to restricted conditions.
“As long as the movement of vessels from Iran and to Iran is under threat, the status of the Strait of Hormuz will remain as it was previously,” the navy command posted on X and shared by Iranian media.
“Any breach of commitments by the United States will receive an appropriate response,” it added.
