Two fuel tankers caught fire on Monday night in the Donnington Industrial Area, at the junction of Goderich Avenue and Masiyephambili Road in Bulawayo, in what is believed to have been a fuel siphoning incident gone wrong.
Bulawayo Chief Fire Officer Mhlangano Moyo said the tankers, both full of fuel, ignited near the DA Service Station.
No one was injured, but firefighters have been fighting the blaze for several hours, with multiple fire engines sent to the scene. Said Moyo:
“We are at the scene, and it’s terrible. Two tankers filled with fuel went up in flames, leading to loud explosions, and we are still trying to contain the fire. It’s been hours. We are investigating the cause.”
Residents of Tshabalala, Nketa and Bellevue took to social media, with some likening the explosions to a minor earthquake, while those nearer the scene reported shattered windows.
