A 23-year-old woman narrowly escaped death on Wednesday after a National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) train clipped her while she was walking along the tracks wearing earphones.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the NRZ said Lisa Shumba was walking on the railway line in Mutare when an approaching train sounded its horn to warn her. However, she failed to hear it due to the earphones she had on.

The train’s engineman threw a water bottle at her, which landed in front of her and startled her into turning around. Realising the train was nearly upon her, Shumba jumped off the tracks but was struck on the side as she moved.

She suffered bruises to her knees and was rushed to hospital for treatment. She was later discharged.

NRZ commended the engineman for his presence of mind, describing his action as heroic. The rail operator said his quick thinking most likely saved the woman’s life. The NRZ said:

The heroic act by the engineman saved her life since the earphones had prevented her from hearing locomotive’s warning horn.

We salute the engineman and appeal to members of the public to avoid walking on the railway lines, especially when putting on earphones.
