A Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZIMPARKS) ranger has died after sustaining severe injuries during a rhino encounter while on patrol late last month.

Knowledge Mudzimureka, a respected member of the anti-poaching and wildlife monitoring unit, passed away on Sunday, June 8, after a two-week battle for his life following the incident on May 26. He had been receiving treatment at a private hospital in Harare.

According to a statement released by ZimParks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo, Mudzimureka and a fellow ranger were on routine patrol in the Savé Valley Conservancy when they unexpectedly came across a mother black rhino and her calf.

In a defensive reaction, the rhino cow charged, inflicting severe injuries to Mudzimureka’s abdomen, particularly his left lung, as well as his head, shoulder, and knee.

He was immediately airlifted by ACE Air Ambulance and underwent two major surgeries: the first to stabilise him on arrival, and the second to treat a critical lung infection.

Despite initial signs of improvement and medical optimism, his condition suddenly deteriorated, leading to his death on Sunday afternoon.

Mudzimureka’s funeral service is scheduled for Wednesday, June 11, where colleagues, friends, and family will gather to honour his life and sacrifice.
