The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has foiled an attempt to smuggle a Range Rover valued at R1.3 million into Zimbabwe, after the suspects drove the vehicle straight into the Limpopo River.
Captain Moses Semono said on Monday, 24 August, that soldiers managed to retrieve the vehicle from the river after the suspects plunged it in to try to evade arrest.
“Lieutenant Colonel Mmamaeke Emmanuel Mello’s men are up in arms against criminality that used to be so rife in this part of South Africa, particularly the Limpopo Province. Men and women of 4 Artillery Regiment refuse to sleep at night, literally,” he said.
“While busy in various parts of South Africa/Zimbabwe border, our soldiers confiscated a Range Rover valued at R1, 300,000.00 which unfortunately the suspects had driven straight into the Limpopo River in their attempt to evade arrest.
“Despite the setback, our soldiers managed to retrieve the vehicle from the river.”
Semono added that the South African Police Service (SAPS) confiscated illicit goods worth R44,000 in the Malalahoek Area of Responsibility.
He said that near Echo Station 1, Lieutenant Madzena and his men seized illicit cigarettes worth R2,344,845.
