A haulage truck driver who allegedly jumped from his moving truck after being ordered to stop at a police roadblock is said to have phoned his employers the next morning to tell them he was resigning and had abandoned the vehicle in Masvingo.
The driver, Dzikamai Chimunda (48), from Harare, was allegedly carrying drugs worth more than US$5,000 when he was stopped around midnight near Exor in Masvingo earlier this month.
Detectives had received a tip-off that Chimunda was transporting drugs and intercepted him near the Exor service station. They ordered him to pull over and asked to search the truck.
Chimunda, who was driving a Freightliner truck owned by Bindura Haulage, registration number AEG 5856, with two trailers, allegedly drove off at high speed.
He later slowed down the vehicle, jumped out and disappeared into a nearby bush. Detectives managed to stop the truck before it crashed into other vehicles. Chimunda escaped and police are now hunting for him.
According to the Masvingo Mirror, Chimunda phoned his bosses the following morning and told them he was resigning and that he had abandoned the truck in Masvingo.
“A search was conducted into the vehicle leading to the recovery of 370 x 100ml bottles of Broncleer cough syrup, 120 x 100ml bottles of Astra cough syrup and approximately 20kg of dagga,” police said.
