The government is looking at alternative vessels to keep communities in Kariba that rely heavily on lake transport connected to essential services and economic activity after the RIDA-operated passenger ferry Mbuya Nehanda capsized last week.

Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona said private operators could be allowed to run services on the route, subject to strict safety checks and regulatory approval.

“We do not want to create another problem in trying to solve the current challenge. We have to make sure that the alternative transport is suitable and safe for passengers,” he said.

Private operators have reportedly offered boats to plug the gap, with the Silverstone ferry among those under consideration.

Meanwhile, former Mount Pleasant MP Fadzayi Mahere has criticised the government for granting the Mbuya Nehanda a certificate of fitness given its age.

As of 19 August 2026, the death toll had risen to 95, with only two victims yet to be identified by their next of kin.
