The Department of Civil Protection has appealed for public help to identify the unclaimed body of a woman believed to be in her early 20s, recovered after the Lake Kariba ferry accident.

The body had been claimed by a family but was later found not to be that family’s relative.

Local Government Services director in Mashonaland West, Cecilia Chitiyo, confirmed the development.

“However, the family later said the body was not that of their relative and returned it, meaning that we now have one unclaimed body,” said Chitiyo.

The woman was wearing a grey hoodie branded “New York Police Department”, a black denim skirt, black shoes and black skin-tight leggings.

Families with a missing relative matching the description have been urged to go to Kariba Hospital mortuary to help identify her.

The appeal comes as authorities continue efforts to identify the remaining victims of the disaster.

Divers are still combing the area around the site near Long Island, King’s Camp, while rescue teams are working to overturn the boat at Musambakaruma Island as the search for those still missing continues.

The vessel capsized on 11 August while crossing the lake, killing at least 95 people and leaving 77 survivors. It is the deadliest maritime and public transport accident in Zimbabwe’s modern history.
