Large crowds are expected to gather at Nyamhunga Stadium in Kariba town on Thursday for a memorial service for the victims of the ferry accident that occurred on Lake Kariba on Tuesday.

The death toll from the disaster has risen to 44 after police confirmed that 31 more bodies were recovered on Wednesday. Search and recovery operations are expected to continue today.

The tragedy has plunged the Kariba community into mourning after the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency vessel, formerly known as DDF Mbuya Nehanda KF 551, capsized near Long Island while travelling to Chalala Fishing Camp.

Mashonaland West Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Marian Chombo is expected to address the memorial service.

Government officials, traditional leaders, bereaved families and members of the community are expected to attend, with Chombo expected to convey Government’s condolences and outline measures to support those affected.

On Wednesday, Chombo visited affected communities in Mahombekombe and Heights, where she was joined by RIDA director-general Christopher Shumba, Chief Nyamhunga, Senator James Gumpo and Deputy Minister of Tourism Tongai Mnangagwa.

Meanwhile, authorities have moved the capsized vessel from the accident site to shallow waters at Musambakaruma Island. Officials said the relocation will make it easier for search and recovery teams to access the vessel and search for any bodies that may still be trapped inside.

The operation involves the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the army and other rescue teams.
