The Ministry of Health and Child Care has launched a public awareness campaign urging Zimbabweans to take precautionary measures against influenza, warning that the contagious viral illness is spreading easily from person to person.
The Ministry said influenza affects the nose, throat and lungs and can cause severe illness if not well managed.
According to the Ministry, flu symptoms usually come on suddenly and can last for several days. The common signs and symptoms include fever or chills, a runny or blocked nose, a persistent cough, sore throat, headache, muscle and body aches, and fatigue. In some cases, particularly among children, the infection may also present with vomiting or diarrhoea.
The Ministry said simple, everyday actions can help stop the spread of the virus. It urged the public to wash hands regularly with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser, to cover the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing with a tissue or the inside of the elbow, and to wear a mask when sick or when caring for someone with flu symptoms.
Members of the public have also been advised to avoid close contact with those who are unwell, to stay at home when sick to avoid spreading the virus, to keep rooms well-ventilated, and to eat a balanced diet, stay hydrated, and get adequate rest.
The Ministry further warned that some symptoms require immediate medical attention. These include difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, persistent high fever, chest pain, confusion or excessive drowsiness, symptoms that worsen or do not improve after several days, and poor feeding or difficulty breathing in infants.
It has urged members of the public to visit their nearest health facility for more information and assistance.
