Police have confirmed that 13 bodies have been retrieved from Lake Kariba following a boat disaster on Tuesday afternoon.
The Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA) boat capsized on 11 August 2026 while travelling from Kariba to Chalala.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said 67 survivors have been rescued and taken to the Mahombe-kombe Primary School Command Centre for medical attention and further management.
He said search and rescue operations are still underway for missing victims, while police are working to verify the exact number of people who were on board.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is still verifying facts on the exact number of people who were in the boat,” said Commissioner Nyathi.
“The confirmed carrying capacity of the boat is 90 excluding the five crew members.”
According to Commissioner Nyathi, initial information provided to the lake captain indicated the vessel had 120 people on board, 108 adults and 12 children, travelling from Kariba to Chalala.
However, police investigations suggest the boat may have been carrying more people than declared.
“In this regard, more details will be availed as relatives are contacted while the search process continues,” he said.
