DStv will drop four M-Net channels, Mzansi Bioskop, Mzansi Magic, M-Net Movies 1 and kykNET Lekker, from 16 September, in the latest cull to hit the South African pay-TV operator following Canal+’s takeover of MultiChoice, which has led to extensive cost-cutting and restructuring.
Meanwhile, DStv’s SuperSport channels are being renamed yet again as part of the ongoing reshuffle.
TV withThinus has asked for the specific reasons for the termination of each channel and when the decision was taken to end them on 16 September.
“As viewing habits continue to change, MultiChoice is refining the DStv channel line-up to match,” MultiChoice said.
“Rather than spreading similar content across many channels, we’re concentrating on fewer, stronger channels, giving subscribers a cleaner, easier-to-navigate line-up and a better viewing experience overall.”
Several SuperSport TV channels on DStv are also being renamed once again. According to MultiChoice, “The SuperSport updates introduce clearer, sport-specific channels, making it even easier for fans to find their favourite sporting action”.
SuperSport Variety 1 (DStv 206) will be renamed SuperSport Football Plus from 18 August, and will become a dedicated home for premium football, featuring selected UEFA Champions League action and other major competitions.
SuperSport Variety 2 (DStv 207) will become SuperSport KickOff for overflow football coverage, while SuperSport Variety 3 (DStv 208) will be renamed SuperSport Africa, showcasing the best of South African and African sport.
SuperSport Variety 4 (DStv 209) will become SuperSport Action, while SuperSport Action (DStv 210) will be rebranded as SuperSport Extra for premium live sport when multiple major events take place simultaneously.
Following the removal of M-Net Movies 1, kykNET Lekker, Mzansi Bioskop and Mzansi Music, DStv will have cut 11 channels across its packages in 2026.
It started the year by discontinuing BET Africa, CBS Reality, CBS Justice and MTV Base. The change followed the decision by the channels’ owner, Paramount, to shut down its linear TV operations in Africa.
At the end of January 2026, it also removed Tlnovelas on channel 131. It was replaced on 1 July by Novelas+, which is available on DStv Access, Family, Compact, Compact Plus and Premium.
