A 51-year-old man from Bikita in Masvingo Province allegedly took his own life after telling his family goblins were tormenting him in his sleep.

The deceased has been identified as Bvekwa Tinarwo, 51, from Chief Mukangamwi’s area.

Police said on 25 July at around 11 am, Tinarwo left home for a nearby mountain, telling his family he was going to look for mobile network coverage.

While on the mountain, he sent a message to the family WhatsApp group saying he intended to end his life because he believed goblins were tormenting him whenever he slept.

After reading the message, relatives and villagers immediately launched a search and later found him hanging from a Mutowa tree with a fibre rope.

Police attended the scene, and no foul play is suspected. Bikita Resident Magistrate Diana Masiirwa waived a post-mortem.

Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the incident and urged members of the public experiencing personal or emotional challenges to seek help rather than resorting to taking their own lives.

“People should seek help whenever they are facing problems. Suicide should never be the option,” said Inspector Dhewa. “We encourage those facing difficulties to seek assistance from family members, community leaders or relevant authorities.”
