Highlanders Football Club has been plunged into mourning after three of its top executives died in a road traffic accident on Thursday evening.
Club chairman Kenneth Mhlophe, vice-chairman Fiso Siziba and treasurer Nkani Khoza were killed when their vehicle hit a cow and was involved in a multi-vehicle collision in Lochard, about 50km from Bulawayo along the Harare-Bulawayo Highway.
The three were returning from Kariba, where Highlanders had lost 1-0 to ZPC Kariba in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match on Wednesday. They were travelling in a Ford Raptor.
It is alleged that Khoza was driving when the vehicle hit a cow at around 8 pm before side-swiping a bus heading towards Harare. The impact reportedly disabled the vehicle’s controls before the collision.
A woman travelling with the executives was thrown from the vehicle when it overturned and was run over by another car, killing her on the spot. She is yet to be identified.
The Bulawayo Fire Brigade was called to the scene to help retrieve the bodies of the executives, who were trapped in the wreckage.
Mhlophe, a retired army colonel who owned Nokel Security, was in his second spell as Highlanders chairman. He had recently indicated that he would not seek re-election when his three-year term ends in January next year.
Siziba was a superintendent in the Zimbabwe Republic Police, while Khoza was the owner of Totally Uniforms, a company specialising in school supplies.
