The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has confirmed a road traffic accident involving a truck transporting Liquid Aluminium Sulphate.
The accident occurred on 23 July 2026 at around 5:30 AM, near the 42 km peg along the Harare–Bindura Highway in Mazowe District.
In a public notice issued on Friday, 24 July, EMA reported that approximately 5,000 litres of the chemical were spilt at the scene.
“Emergency response operations are currently underway, being led by EMA to contain and recover the spilled material,” reads the notice.
“Approximately 2,000 litres of the spilled chemical were subsequently recovered, while the remainder was absorbed into the roadside soil.”
EMA has urged members of the public to exercise extreme caution and to observe safety precautions around the affected area.
Members of the public have been advised to avoid entering or interfering with the affected and barricaded area, and to avoid any direct contact with contaminated soil or residual liquid at the site.
The agency has also warned parents and farmers to keep children and livestock away from the site, and motorists travelling along the affected stretch of the Harare-Bindura Highway to exercise caution and comply with directions from authorities on the ground.
EMA said it will continue to monitor the clean-up operations, which will include the excavation and safe treatment of contaminated soil to ensure the area is restored to its original state as far as possible.
