A 24-year-old man from Mabvuku in Harare, who is accused of fatally stabbing his two young children before setting their bodies alight in a one-roomed cabin and attempting to kill his wife, was remanded in custody from his hospital bed.
Gift Muyengwa appeared before Harare provincial magistrate Ruth Moyo facing two counts of murder and one of attempted murder.
He was advised to apply for bail at the High Court and was remanded to 5 August 2025 pending investigations.
Prosecutor Takudzwa Jambawu told the court that at around 2.05 am on 20 July, Muyengwa, his wife and their two children, Audin (6) and Ropafadzo (3), were asleep in their wooden cabin in Mabvuku.
The State alleges that his wife woke up feeling dizzy to find Muyengwa standing over her with a kitchen knife. She realised that she had been stabbed to the head and was bleeding.
It is alleged that he then stabbed her in the neck and injured one of her fingers as she tried to defend herself.
The court heard that she managed to escape from the cabin and ran outside shouting for help.
The State further alleges that Muyengwa then turned on the two children, who were still asleep, and fatally stabbed them before setting the cabin on fire while their bodies were still inside. The bodies were burnt beyond recognition.
The court heard that Muyengwa later attempted to take his own life by stabbing himself in the chest and stomach.
