The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has urged retailers, vendors and consumers to stop selling and buying unlabelled alcoholic beverages.
Speaking at a Liquor Licence Review Workshop in Gweru on Monday, Chief Inspector Tonderai Chigweshe said police had intensified operations to remove unlabelled and counterfeit alcohol products from the market.
Chigweshe said the liquor licensing system is designed to protect communities, maintain public order and safeguard vulnerable groups, including minors.
“There are a lot of liquids being sold on the streets that have alcohol content, but people are not aware because they are not labelled,” said Chigweshe.
“Our Police officers are on the lookout for such products, and the Ministry of Health and Childcare will take serious action on such liquids.”
According to Chigweshe, unbranded alcoholic beverages are being sold in some areas, with reports that schoolchildren are among those buying them. He stressed that public safety remains a top priority.
“Our role is preventative in stopping illegal sales. Police are empowered to enforce compliance, investigate breaches and protect public safety,” he said.
“Criminal records are for life and can lead to permanent consequences such as a denied liquor licence for good.”
