A former till operator at a Nando’s outlet in Gweru has appeared in court facing allegations of defrauding her former employer of US$15,482.

Cynthia Jongwe (28) is accused of receiving cash payments from customers and issuing receipts indicating that the transactions had been processed through point-of-sale (POS) systems. However, the receipts allegedly could not be verified during internal audits.

The complainant is Nando’s Gweru, represented by operations manager Chrispen Moyo.

The State alleges that Jongwe collected cash from customers before generating invoices showing that payments had been made through US dollar swipe transactions.

She allegedly produced receipts indicating that payments had been processed through the company’s CBZ bank terminal, TN CyberTech Bank terminal and InnBucks platform, despite the transactions not having been completed.

The court heard that while the POS system showed the transactions as successful, an internal audit later found no corresponding records of the payments on the relevant banking platforms.

The State further alleges that bank records confirmed the money was never deposited into the company’s accounts, resulting in a reported prejudice of US$15,482.75.
