The City of Harare has confirmed a scabies outbreak in Hopley and Stoneridge, with most of the reported cases affecting children under the age of 12.

In a statement, the council’s Health Department said the outbreak was first detected in mid-June 2026 and has since spread to surrounding communities.

Scabies is a highly contagious skin condition caused by microscopic mites that burrow into the skin. Common symptoms include intense itching, especially at night, skin rashes and sores from scratching, which can lead to secondary bacterial infections.

According to the city, the disease spreads mainly through prolonged skin-to-skin contact and through sharing infested clothing, bedding and towels.

Residents experiencing persistent itching, rashes or other symptoms consistent with scabies have been urged to seek medical attention at their nearest health facility. The council said early diagnosis and treatment are critical to stop further spread.

It also advised that household members and close contacts of infected people should be assessed and treated where necessary to prevent re-infestation.

To reduce the risk of transmission, residents have been urged to maintain good personal hygiene, avoid sharing clothing, towels, bedding, and other personal items, and wash clothes, bedding, and towels regularly in hot water and dry them thoroughly. Those on treatment have been told to complete the full course as prescribed.

The Health Department said it has activated outbreak response measures, including enhanced disease surveillance, case management, health education and community awareness campaigns. Health teams are working with affected communities to contain the outbreak.

The city has appealed to residents to cooperate with health personnel, follow guidance from rapid response teams, and visit their nearest City of Harare clinic for further information or assistance.
