The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has expressed concern over motorists who continue to ignore traffic regulations at level crossings, following another accident in Ruwa.
In the latest incident, a pick-up truck was hit by a train at the Ruwa level crossing on Monday after the driver allegedly ignored an approaching train. No injuries were reported.
The NRZ said the accident could have been avoided if the driver had observed level crossing rules.
The parastatal has urged drivers to exercise extreme caution when approaching level crossings, to stop and check for approaching trains and never to attempt to beat a train to the crossing.
It reiterated its safety message to all public transport drivers and motorists to always stop, look and listen for approaching trains at railroad level crossings, noting that trains cannot stop instantly and can come from either direction.
