Police have confirmed the arrest of two suspects for allegedly committing fraud on social media.
In a statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said Clara Chiwashira, 20, and Chipo Masuku, 22, duped more than 100 people of around US$100 each after luring the victims into a WhatsApp group.
“The ZRP arrested two suspects, Clara Chiwashira (20) and Chipo Masuku (22), for committing fraud through social media platforms. The suspects duped over 100 people of amounts ranging from USD 100 each after luring the purported applicants to join a WhatsApp group dubbed ‘Job opportunities’,” the statement reads.
“The applicants were promised employment as till operators, housekeepers and merchandisers. The employment offers did not materialise despite the various amounts paid to the suspects.
“Meanwhile, the police are seeking information which may lead to the arrest of the suspects’ accomplices, identified as Boss Kevy or Charles Chizimbe.
“The Police have also arrested Melusi Delile (35) for 34 cases of armed robbery which occurred in the suburbs of Budiriro, Glenview, Glen Norah and Highfields.
“The suspect targeted people walking through secluded footpaths, bus stops and dark areas to take cellphones, cash and other valuables. His accomplices, believed to be four or five, are currently on the run.”
