Former Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) director general Fulton Mangwanya was reportedly questioned by police in Harare on Wednesday over allegations that he issued murder threats while still in office.

According to ZimLive, officers allegedly tried to arrest Mangwanya on Tuesday night, but the former spy chief evaded them.

He is understood to have reported to Harare Central Police Station on Wednesday, accompanied by his lawyer, Musindo Hungwe.

Approached for comment by ZimLive, Hungwe declined to discuss the matter. “I’m not at liberty to answer any question in relation to your enquiry,” he said.

The publication cited a source who said the case stems from a complaint lodged in June last year, when Mangwanya was still CIO director general.

He allegedly threatened to kill a businessman and his family during a dispute.

Police recorded a warned and cautioned statement from Mangwanya. It remains unclear why action on the complaint is only being taken now.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa dismissed Mangwanya in April after just over a year in the post, without giving reasons.

His removal followed reports that he had convened a meeting with Mnangagwa, the First Lady and Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, at which he urged the ZANU-PF leader to stop a push to extend his presidential term. He warned that the move posed a national security threat and had split the government.

Mnangagwa was said to be angered by the intervention, suspecting Mangwanya of acting at Chiwenga’s behest — both men are from Mashonaland East Province.
